Milwaukee Brewers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: A back injury has kept Braun out of the lineup recently, so it's good to see some pop from the former MVP. His last extra-base hit had been a double on May 9, a stretch of six games. Make sure he's in your lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Since moving into the leadoff spot earlier this month, Villar is hitting .308 with a .392 on-base percentage and 10 steals. He hasn't scored a ton, and his power is non-existent, but for anyone looking to make up ground in stolen bases Villar is worth adding.

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) worked a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one, for Class A Brevard County on Tuesday, May 24. It was Smith's first live action since he tore his lateral collateral ligament in late March.
Fantasy Tip: Smith's injury ceded the closer's job to Jeremy Jeffress, who is 12-for-13 in save opportunities, so he'll come back in a setup role. Even with his strikeouts, Smith's short-term value is in leagues that count holds. Long term, though, he's not the worst stash candidate considering he has much nastier stuff than Jeffress.

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will throw a 60-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, May 25, and will then move to live batting practice Saturday, May 28. Garza said he's had no setbacks and is aiming for a return in mid-June.
Fantasy Tip: Garza should have a rotation spot to return to, but you'd have to be really desperate for a starting arm in a cavernous mixed or NL-only league to consider adding him. Garza has yet to pitch this season and had an ugly 5.63 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and just 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings with Milwaukee in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Arcia is hitting .325 this month and .316 overall. He has four homers, 22 RBI and six steals in the hitter-friendly league. Jonathan Villar has played extremely well for the Brew Crew, but Arcia is going to be hard to stave off. Stash him in NL-only leagues and keep him on your watch lists in mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Smith could be back in a couple of weeks, but Jeremy Jeffress has been solid as the closer. Smith could emerge as the next in line, but he's limited to NL-only value right now.

Fantasy Tip: Carter is enjoying a renaissance year, if you call 12 home runs and an average near .250 a renaissance. Still, in his final couple years with the Houston Astros it was not out of the question for him to bat .200 with 40 homers. Carter is doing well enough for now to merit fantasy consideration.

Fantasy Tip: Braun is battling a stiff back and he looks all right for the time being, but if the back flares up again it could become an issue. Still, he was hitting .364-7-28 heading into this game so take advantage of his talents for now.

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun (back) is back in the starting lineup against New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard Sunday, May 22, batting third. In addition, INF Hernan Perez will play third base and bat sixth, while 1B/OF Ramon Flores will start at first base and bat eighth. 1B Chris Carter and INF Aaron Hill receiving the day off.
Fantasy Tip: Braun has been having a tremendous season and he should be re-inserted into all fantasy lineups without hesitation. On the other hand, Perez and Flores should be avoided due to the unfavorable matchup against Syndergaard.

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday, May 21, and is ready to begin a rehab assignment, according to manager Craig Counsell. If all goes well, he should be activated from the disabled list during the first week of June.
Fantasy Tip: Jeremy Jeffress has done nothing to warrant losing the closer's job but a healthy Smith would probably be next in the pecking order to see save opportunities if he falters down the line. Smith posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 12.9 K/9 rate in 2015, so he has some value in fantasy leagues which use the holds category.

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun (back) felt fine after taking batting practice for the first time in several days Saturday, May 20. He hopes to return to the starting lineup against the New York Mets Sunday, May 21.
Fantasy Tip: Braun has gotten off to a tremendous start at the dish, batting .364 with seven home runs and 28 RBI through 35 games. Don't hesitate to start him in any fantasy format if he is given the green light to play Sunday.

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun is not in the starting lineup against New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom Saturday, May 21. 2B Scooter Gennett will bat second and play the keystone position, with INF Aaron Hill sliding over to play third base and bat sixth. OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis will bat fifth and play center field, OF Alex Presley will bat seventh and play left field and OF Ramon Flores will bat eighth and play right field.
Fantasy Tip: Presley (6-for-37) and Flores (4-for-19) have both struggled at the plate over the last two weeks and should be avoided in all fantasy formats. Gennett, Hill and Nieuwenhuis have fared better but are somewhat risky fantasy options versus deGrom this afternoon.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta has only tossed one quality start in four outings this month but has a favorable matchup in his next scheduled appearance against the Atlanta Braves Thursday, May 26. However, he should still be viewed as a low-end starting option in NL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.
Fri, 20 May 2016 15:03:25 -0700
Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun (back) is not a candidate to be placed on the disabled list, manager Craig Counsell said Friday, May 20. Counsell noted Braun is still nursing a lower back injury and is still considered day-to-day.
Fantasy Tip: Braun has been cruising to the tune of a .364/.429/.576 slash line with 21 runs, seven home runs, 28 RBI and two stolen bases, and fantasy owners hope he can put the injury behind him and continue mashing at the dish. Missing a few games should be expected with Braun, so don't overreact. When he is in the lineup, the production is solid. Stay tuned for updates.

Milwaukee Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett is not in the starting lineup against New York Mets left-handed SP Steven Matz Friday, May 20. 3B Hernan Perez is starting at third base and is hitting second, while 3B Aaron Hill moves to the keystone and is batting fifth.
Fantasy Tip: Perez is in a nice lineup spot, but he's really only valuable for his speed (five steals) as a deep sleeper in DFS action tonight. The veteran Hill doesn't do anything that stands out in any one category anymore, and he's hitting a very mediocre .244 (10-for-41) with only one of his four homers against southpaws in 2015. There's not much upside here in daily games.
