Milwaukee Brewers news, rumors and injuries

Milwaukee Brewers RP Michael Blazek was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs on Wednesday, July 27, and pitched two scoreless innings of relief against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In a related move, RP Jacob Barnes (elbow) was placed on the 15-day DL.
Fantasy Tip: Blazek was cruising along at 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA before dealing with an elbow injury that led to subsequent struggles. Normally his return would be of little interest, but the Brewers are shopping both Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith, and if the team moves them before the deadline Blazek could assume a high-profile role. Just tuck the name away for now and see what the Crew does.

Fantasy Tip: In fairness, Milwaukee's defense was particularly abysmal on Wednesday, even if it only ended up with two of the runs being unearned. Still, this was the continuation of a major swoon for Nelson, who is 1-6 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over his last 10 starts. He's exclusively an NL-only/deep-mixed candidate at this time.

Milwaukee Brewers SS Jonathan Villar was removed from the game in the third inning and replaced by OF Jake Elmore against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, July 27. Prior to that, Villar committed two errors and was caught stealing for a league-high 12th time.
Fantasy Tip: Villar is tied with Pittsburgh's Starling Marte for the league lead in steals (36), but no on else in baseball has been caught more than eight times this year and it appears as though manager Craig Counsell had seen enough. It's possible the team will sit Villar in Thursday's finale so keep an eye on the situation to see if he should remain in your starting lineup.

The Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, New York Mets and Texas Rangers are among the clubs that have expressed recent interest in Milwaukee Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy, along with a possible "mystery team."
Fantasy Tip: The 30-year-old Lucroy was batting .301 with 13 homers and 50 RBI through 92 games entering play Wednesday, July 27, and should be viewed as an elite catching option regardless of where he ends up.

Fantasy Tip: Braun's ability to get on base (.419 OBP) and steal bases (6-for-6) have both been exemplary this month, but only three of his 23 July hits have been for extra bases. While his speed and batting average are keeping him relevant, Braun's power outage is a potential concern down the stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Garza had lost four in a row heading into Tuesday and was actually in line for just his second win of the season before the bullpen blew a one-run lead. Once a solid mid-rotation arm, Garza is just taking up space on the Brewers' roster due to his contract and has essentially no fantasy value regardless of league size.

Milwaukee Brewers OF Hernan Perez is batting second in the lineup Tuesday, July 26, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. 2B Scooter Gennett, who normally hits second, is batting sixth against Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin.
Fantasy Tip: Perez had four multi-hit games in a row between July 19-22, raising his value in fantasy circles. The team has had him bat second before just to shake things up a little bit, and Perez is worth using in DFS formats with the higher lineup spot.

Fantasy Tip: Braun is at .319-14-45 with 11 stolen bases, giving fantasy owners a mix of power and speed. He's a legitimate 20-20 threat and a powerful threat in all formats.
Mon, 25 Jul 2016 23:14:38 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Maldonado is on the mind of many fantasy owners because Jonathan Lucroy will likely be traded prior to the deadline. He's currently hitting .157-3-5 in 31 games and doesn't carry much fantasy value at this point.
Mon, 25 Jul 2016 14:51:39 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Santana has been limited to just 40 games this season and owns an underwhelming .234/.347/.391 slash line. He remains a potential stash candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, but you shouldn't fret replacing him with a healthy contributor, either.

Milwaukee Brewers 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup Monday, July 25. C Jonathan Lucroy is starting at first base and batting fourth, and C Martin Maldonado is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Arizona Dimaondbacks SP Braden Shipley Monday.
Fantasy Tip: Carter is struggling in July with a .167/.282/.417 slash line, but eight of his 10 hits have gone for extra bases, which highlights his upside and fantasy relevance. With 22 home runs and 55 RBI for the season, he should be owned in all seasonal leagues. Lucroy is a top-tier backstop in all fantasy formats, and playing first base Monday could be an opportunity to showcase his flexibility and increase his trade value. Maldonado is a fantasy afterthought.

Milwaukee Brewers 3B Will Middlebrooks (leg) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower right leg strain Monday, July 25, and OF Keon Broxton was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks had only three hits in 27 at-bats (.111) this year, so he can be dropped in even the deepest of NL-only leagues. Broxton has speed to burn but hit just .125 (8-for-64) this year and is unlikely to receive regular playing time. Only add him in NL leagues if you need some speed.
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 12:59:28 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Owners should keep an eye on the situation to see if Middlebrooks will be out for an extended period of time. He is mostly a bench player for the Brewers and should be avoided in most leagues.
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 09:54:04 -0700
Milwaukee Brewers OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis and OF Ramon Flores are not in the starting lineup against Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester Sunday, July 24. 3B Hernan Perez will start in right field, while 3B Will Middlebrooks will start at third base and is batting seventh. OF Jake Elmore will start in center field and is batting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks has gone 3-for-9 against left-handed pitchers since being recalled from the minor leagues but should be avoided in most leagues. Elmore is hitting only .125 since joining the team and should not be used by owners.
Sat, 23 Jul 2016 19:25:08 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Even after the big game, Nieuwenhuis' average sits at an ugly .207. He can remain on the waiver wire.
