Dodgers | Alex Wood to return Monday

Thu, 26 May 2016 09:41:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood (triceps) is expected to return and start against the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 30. He was scratched from his scheduled start Friday, May 27, with triceps soreness.

Fantasy Tip: It's a tough break for Wood, whose mechanical fixes recently have paid off in a big way. The lefty has allowed two earned runs or less in his last three starts and has struck out a whopping 27. After a minor injury, trusting him against a dangerous Cubs lineup is a sketchy proposition. You're probably better off skipping him this time around to be safe.

Dodgers | Julio Urias to make debut Friday

Thu, 26 May 2016 08:00:36 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias will make his major league debut and start Friday, May 27, against the New York Mets. SP Alex Wood (triceps) was scratched from his start due to triceps tightness.

Fantasy Tip: The 19-year-old phenom has been filthy at Class AAA Oklahoma City at 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP and 44 strikeouts in 41 innings. Urias may only be up for one start because Hyun-Jin Ryu is due back in a couple of rehab starts and because the team wants to limit Urias' workload. Urias could eventually be in the bullpen during the stretch run. Urias is expected to be a hot pickup universally, but he will probably have to set the world on fire to force the team's hand in keeping him in the rotation. He's worth snagging due to his potential, but bear in mind the pitfalls. If/when the team puts him in the bullpen, he could have solid value for ratios and K's.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu makes rehab start

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:57:22 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) threw four scoreless innings for Class AAA Oklahoma City on Wednesday, May 25. He surrendered four hits and struck out three in his 55-pitch outing. Ryu is set to make two more rehab starts.

Fantasy Tip: We haven't seen Ryu on a major-league mound since October 2014, but prior to his shoulder problems the lefty was a dynamic part of the Dodgers rotation -- 28-15, 3.17 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 293 K's in 344 career innings. It remains to be seen how effective he'll be after more than a year away, but the upside is such that he should be stashed in all NL-only and deeper mixed setups.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir fans a dozen

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:50:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir struck out a dozen hitters in the team's 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, May 25. His final line: six innings, four hits, one run, two walks and 12 strikeouts. The 12 K's were Kazmir's highest total since September 2013.

Fantasy Tip: It was a nice bounce back for Kazmir, who got roughed up by the light-hitting Padres in his last outing. That's been par for the course this year as the southpaw has been up and down from one start to the next. He faces a much sterner test next time in the Cubs and Jason Hammel. We'll see if he can stack success.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig benching not punishment

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:26:43 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig was not in the starting lineup on Wednesday, May 25, but manager Dave Roberts insists the decision to give Puig the day off was made before he removed the outfielder from the game on Tuesday night. "It's not punitive at all," Roberts said. "After the game we talked. He received everything well, so it's just moving forward."

Fantasy Tip: Puig came on for defensive purposes late in the game and struck out in his only at-bat. The Dodgers are off tomorrow before starting a three-game set with the Mets. Puig is a combined 3-for-22 in his career against New York's projected starters, so perhaps the extra rest will help him focus on a tough upcoming series.

Dodgers | Howie Kendrick draws a start in LF

Wed, 25 May 2016 16:08:16 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Howie Kendrick is starting in left field and is hitting seventh against Cincinnati Reds SP Dan Straily. OF Carl Crawford remains on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: It's becoming apparent that the aging Crawford is more of a bench option for outfield depth. He hasn't started a game since May 19 and is hitting just .200 without a home run on the season. Crawford has zero steals, too. At this point, he's only a bench option in NL leagues. Kendrick hit his first home run of the year last Sunday and doesn't have a ton of upside these days as a utility player, either. Consider the 32-year-old a sleeper pick against a weak starter tonight.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig still benched

Wed, 25 May 2016 15:59:29 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, May 25. OF Trayce Thompson is starting in right field and is batting fifth against Cincinnati Reds SP Dan Straily.

Fantasy Tip: Puig was benched last night for not hustling out a hit that should've been a double. Skipper Dave Roberts is probably sending a message to the talented Puig, but the Cuban is hitting only .247 with five home runs and 19 RBI on the season. Puig is a midrange outfielder with a power-speed combination, but his ceiling isn't high as was previously thought. Thompson has excelled with the Dodgers this year and continues to start on a nightly basis. He should be owned in the majority of mixed leagues at this point and is a fine daily selection tonight.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig pulled for lack of hustle

Tue, 24 May 2016 22:53:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig was removed in the sixth inning of the team's game on Tuesday, May 24, for not running out of the batter's box following his single, according to manager Dave Roberts.

Fantasy Tip: Puig has been down this road before. And while it's a bit embarrassing, it's certainly a much better scenario than another injury for Puig. While he has struggled this season, he has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, raising his average 15 points in the process.

Dodgers | Clayton Kershaw off to dominant start

Tue, 24 May 2016 22:41:27 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw threw his third shutout of the season on Monday, May 23, and in doing so became the first major-league pitcher to log three shutouts in his first 10 starts of a season since David Cone in 1994.

Fantasy Tip: Yet more evidence that Kershaw is as good as they get. Whatever his shortcomings may be come October, he's a legitimate ace for fantasy owners.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig exits game Tuesday

Tue, 24 May 2016 22:21:10 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig (undisclosed) left game the team's game Tuesday, May 24, against the Cincinnati Reds after an awkward slide in the sixth inning.

Fantasy Tip: There's no update yet on the severity of the injury but it would be a bad break for the 25-year-old Cuban if he has to miss any time, considering he's finally been heating up over the past week. While Puig is out, Carl Crawford, Trayce Thompson and Enrique Hernandez each get a boost.

Dodgers | Julio Urias' agent advising measured approach

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:44:21 -0700

The agent for Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias, Scott Boras, is advising a measured approach for his star prospect. The 19-year old is pitching in Triple-A with an eye on joining the rotation in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Urias has a scary-good upside, and what Boras is looking at is evidence that pitchers who have less than 650 innings on their arm before age 24 have prolonged careers. It is the same strategy that got Washington Nationals SP Max Scherzer his $210 million contract. Urias will likely skip the big leagues this season, so if you have room in dynasty or keeper leagues he may be worth the flyer. Urias might be worth stashing in NL and deeper mixed leagues in case a callup occurs this year. Urias is probably gone already because he is one of the top prospects in baseball, but if Urias is still around then pick him up.

Dodgers | Alex Wood made mechanical tweak

Tue, 24 May 2016 10:52:59 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood discovered at the end of April that he was lifting his front leg slightly higher during his delivery, which disrupted his timing. He worked with pitching coach Rick Honeycutt to make an adjustment, and Wood has allowed 22 hits, five walks, 43 strikeouts and a 2.67 ERA in 30 1/3 innings over his last five starts.

Fantasy Tip: Wood's ERA is now down to 4.03 on the season, and he's fanning 9.6 hitters per nine innings after striking out a season-high 13 in his last outing against the Padres. If those in your league haven't caught on and he's still available, scoop Wood up immediately.

Dodgers | Clayton Kershaw continues mastery

Mon, 23 May 2016 23:49:21 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw allowed two hits and struck out seven in a 1-0 shutout over the Cincinnati Reds Monday, May 23. He retired the final 17 batters and issued just his fifth walk of the season.

Fantasy Tip: What more can we say about Kershaw's season? He's 7-1 with a 1.48 ERA, a 0.66 WHIP and 95 K's in 79 innings. If he's not the best pitcher in fantasy, he's not far from it.

Dodgers | Four Dodgers regulars sitting

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:04:36 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Carl Crawford, 2B Chase Utley, C Yasmani Grandal and OF Joc Pederson are all out of the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds left-handed SP Brandon Finnegan Monday, May 23. OF Enrique Hernandez is playing left field and leading off, 2B Howie Kendrick is at second base and is batting cleanup, OF Trayce Thompson is in center field and hitting fifth, while C A.J. Ellis is behind the plate and hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Against Finnegan, Hernandez, Kendrick and Thompson all make for solid value picks in DFS tonight. Kendrick hit his first home run of the year Sunday and is in a prime spot to take advantage for his owners. Ellis remains a low-end catching option, especially while batting low in the lineup.

Dodgers | Ross Stripling sent down

Mon, 23 May 2016 15:48:59 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Ross Stripling was optioned to Class AAA Oklahoma City Monday, May 23. SP Mike Bolsinger and RP Luis Avilan were recalled from Oklahoma City in corresponding moves.

Fantasy Tip: Stripling was sporting a 4.53 ERA and struck out a mediocre 6.7 hitters per nine innings for the Dodgers in eight starts this year. He was only rosterable in cavernous mixed and NL leagues for depth. Bolsinger did strike out just over eight hitters per nine last year but allowed three runs in only 4 1/3 frames in one start this year. He can be ignored in all mixed leagues for now.
