Dodgers | No-decision for Clayton Kershaw

Mon, 30 May 2016 00:57:52 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw tossed nearly eight innings of solid baseball, with no walks and 10 strikeouts, but did not get the decision Sunday, May 29. His team came back in the ninth inning for a 4-2 win over the New York Mets. It would have been Kershaw's sixth victory in a row. Kershaw finished 5-0 with a 0.91 ERA in six May starts. He had 65 strikeouts and two walks during the month.

Fantasy Tip: Chalk this one up to manager Dave Roberts playing the percentages and coming up short. Kershaw still had solid numbers even in the defeat. He had a strong month of May and remains one of the top options in all of baseball.

Dodgers | Kenta Maeda shakes off comebacker

Sun, 29 May 2016 18:45:23 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Kenta Maeda (hand) said he will be able to make his next start Thursday, June 2, against the Chicago Cubs after taking a line drive off his pitching hand Saturday, May 28. X-rays were negative, and he said he has no pain.

Fantasy Tip: Maeda has cooled a bit after a hot start, and while his hand is supposedly fine, it isn't the worst idea to leave him on the bench against the powerful offense of the Cubs.

Dodgers | Trayce Thompson not hitting Sunday

Sun, 29 May 2016 13:52:40 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Trayce Thompson (back) is not in the starting lineup Sunday, May 29, against the New York Mets. OF Yasiel Puig is in right field and will hit fifth against Mets SP Bartolo Colon.

Fantasy Tip: It seems like Thompson and Puig are going back and forth in right field and platooning a bit, but Puig had four of the seven starts this week. If Thompson and Puig continue this pure platoon, neither player is a solid fantasy start in weekly or annual leagues. However, DFS players can benefit from this situation. Thompson may come off the bench for pinch-hit duties Sunday night, but he should still be seated.

Dodgers | Trayce Thompson exits early

Sat, 28 May 2016 20:59:12 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Trayce Thompson (back) exited against the New York Mets Saturday, May 28, with lower-back soreness.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson has shown enough offensive upside to be owned in NL-only leagues, but check on his status moving forward to make sure he is safe to play.

Dodgers | Julio Urias sent back down

Sat, 28 May 2016 18:27:44 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias was optioned to Class AAA Oklahoma City Saturday, May 28, but head coach Dave Roberts didn't rule out Urias returning to the majors this season. In a corresponding move, RP Casey Fien's contract was purchased.

Fantasy Tip: Urias had command issues in his debut Friday, May 27, and the Dodgers have made no secret about wanting to limit his innings. Feel free to hang on to him if you have the space, but don't expect a ton of starts from him.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig out Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 13:49:23 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig is not in the starting lineup Saturday, May 28, against the New York Mets. OF Trayce Thompson is playing right field and batting fifth against Mets SP Noah Syndergaard.

Fantasy Tip: Puig is starting in with old habits like lack of hustle on the bases, prompting manager Dave Roberts to sit him down. This appears to be a normal day off for Puig, who has eight hits in his last nine games. Sit Puig accordingly. Thompson's .279-7-19 average merits consideration in DFS leagues, but the revolving lineup means Thompson doesn't see action in every game.

Dodgers | Chase Utley drives in four runs Friday

Fri, 27 May 2016 19:15:41 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Chase Utley went 1-for-2 with a double, four RBI, two runs scored and a walk against the New York Mets Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Utley is 7-for-18 (.389) over his last four games and has bounced back nicely from a miserable 2015 campaign, when he hit .212 in 107 regular-season games. He is batting .330 through 91 at-bats on the road this season and should be viewed as a potential value play in daily fantasy contests.

Dodgers | Julio Urias struggles in debut Friday

Fri, 27 May 2016 19:12:49 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias allowed three runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings in his major-league debut against the New York Mets Friday, May 27, with four walks and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Team executive Andrew Friedman has not revealed if Urias will remain in the rotation or if this was a spot start for the highly-touted 19-year-old left-hander. There's a possibility that he could remain with the parent club as a reliever as the club attempts to limit his innings, with SPs Alex Wood and Hyun-Jin Ryu (elbow) on the verge of rejoining the rotation. Urias should remain stashed in all formats for now but check back for updates to see how the Dodgers plan to use him going forward.

Dodgers | Howie Kendrick starting in left field again

Fri, 27 May 2016 12:45:03 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Howie Kendrick is starting in left field and batting fifth against New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom Friday, May 27. OF Carl Crawford is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Kendrick started in left last time out, too, but he has been an underwhelming fantasy option since returning from injury with a .234/.277/.297 slash line. He is a fringe own in the majority of leagues at this point, but with that said, his track record suggests he should bounce back sooner than later. Crawford has been limited to just 262 plate appearances since the beginning of last season and has posted poor fantasy results (four home runs, 10 stolen bases and a .650 OPS). He should be left to the waiver wire outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only setups.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig in, Trayce Thompson out

Fri, 27 May 2016 12:34:29 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig is starting in right field and batting seventh against New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom Friday, May 27. OF Trayce Thompson is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Thompson had batted fifth in each of the past six games and owns a .289/.355/.538 career slash line through 248 at-bats. He is gaining fantasy value and is a viable option in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Puig, meanwhile, has been extremely underwhelming this season with a .246/.287/.380 line and just 19 runs, five home runs, 19 RBI and four stolen bases. Stay patient with Puig for now, but he'll need to turn it around soon or there is a risk of losing playing time.

Dodgers | Julio Urias could stick in relief

Thu, 26 May 2016 16:41:25 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias could stick in relief after his major league debut against the New York Mets Friday, May 27. Dodgers executive Andrew Friedman wouldn't say if Urias' start Friday is a spot start. The team will decide after the game what Urias' role is moving forward. Friedman also said it's more likely that the Dodgers rotation Urias between the bullpen and rotation than completely shut him down.

Fantasy Tip: The 19-year-old lefty is the Dodgers' top prospect this year and one of the top prospects in all of baseball. His numbers at Class AAA Oklahoma City (1.10 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 9.7 K/9) jump off the page. He should already be owned in all leagues, but temper expectations since there's a really good chance this is just a spot start with Alex Wood returning to the rotation and Hyun-Jin Ryu coming off the DL soon.

Dodgers | Alex Wood to return Monday

Thu, 26 May 2016 09:41:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood (triceps) is expected to return and start against the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 30. He was scratched from his scheduled start Friday, May 27, with triceps soreness.

Fantasy Tip: It's a tough break for Wood, whose mechanical fixes recently have paid off in a big way. The lefty has allowed two earned runs or less in his last three starts and has struck out a whopping 27. After a minor injury, trusting him against a dangerous Cubs lineup is a sketchy proposition. You're probably better off skipping him this time around to be safe.

Dodgers | Julio Urias to make debut Friday

Thu, 26 May 2016 08:00:36 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias will make his major league debut and start Friday, May 27, against the New York Mets. SP Alex Wood (triceps) was scratched from his start due to triceps tightness.

Fantasy Tip: The 19-year-old phenom has been filthy at Class AAA Oklahoma City at 4-1 with a 1.10 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP and 44 strikeouts in 41 innings. Urias may only be up for one start because Hyun-Jin Ryu is due back in a couple of rehab starts and because the team wants to limit Urias' workload. Urias could eventually be in the bullpen during the stretch run. Urias is expected to be a hot pickup universally, but he will probably have to set the world on fire to force the team's hand in keeping him in the rotation. He's worth snagging due to his potential, but bear in mind the pitfalls. If/when the team puts him in the bullpen, he could have solid value for ratios and K's.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu makes rehab start

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:57:22 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) threw four scoreless innings for Class AAA Oklahoma City on Wednesday, May 25. He surrendered four hits and struck out three in his 55-pitch outing. Ryu is set to make two more rehab starts.

Fantasy Tip: We haven't seen Ryu on a major-league mound since October 2014, but prior to his shoulder problems the lefty was a dynamic part of the Dodgers rotation -- 28-15, 3.17 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 293 K's in 344 career innings. It remains to be seen how effective he'll be after more than a year away, but the upside is such that he should be stashed in all NL-only and deeper mixed setups.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir fans a dozen

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:50:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir struck out a dozen hitters in the team's 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, May 25. His final line: six innings, four hits, one run, two walks and 12 strikeouts. The 12 K's were Kazmir's highest total since September 2013.

Fantasy Tip: It was a nice bounce back for Kazmir, who got roughed up by the light-hitting Padres in his last outing. That's been par for the course this year as the southpaw has been up and down from one start to the next. He faces a much sterner test next time in the Cubs and Jason Hammel. We'll see if he can stack success.
