Dodgers | Joc Pederson to work on making contact

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 11:15:13 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Joc Pederson's numbers at Triple-A Albuquerque last year were very impressive - a .435 on-base percentage, .582 slugging percentage, 33 home runs, 30 stolen bases and 100 walks - but he also struck out 149 times, leading many skeptics to think he may be particularly vulnerable to hard-throwing pitchers in the big leagues because of his long, aggressive swing. The Dodgers have been focused on helping Pederson generate more contact heading back to last season. Pederson will get first crack at the center field job over OFs Andre Ethier, Andy Van Slyke and Chris Heisey. Los Angeles is confident that Pederson can make adjustments, though, as he improved to .299 against lefties last year after hitting just .200 against southpaws in 2013. Pederson said he refined his approach in winter ball this year after the Dodgers expressed concern about his high strikeout totals. Manager Don Mattingly said Pederson's swing reminds him of Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez and Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano.

Fantasy Tip: Pederson is a fantasy baseball sleeper prospect with heaps of upside potential as a power-speed guy. He has power to all fields and should see plenty of playing time right off the bat. If you're going to reach a little in the middle rounds, you do so for talents like Pederson with immediate playing time upside.

Dodgers | Jimmy Rollins stayed fit

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 11:02:19 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Jimmy Rollins has stayed fit this offseason with a regimen that included yoga, and he weighed in at 172 pounds this spring, which is roughly 12 pounds over his playing weight back in high school. "My thought is, 'Small dogs last longer. They really do,'" manager Don Mattingly said. "He hasn't put stress on his body because he's kept his weight the same and he's kept in shape. And just watching him work here, you can tell he's getting ready for April. That's what you get with older guys." Mattingly won't commit to a target of games for Rollins, but something in the 145-game range sounds reasonable.

Fantasy Tip: Rollins has more downside with the move to a less favorable hitter's park, but the retooled Dodgers lineup should help him score plenty of runs atop the L.A. lineup. There's also still some undervalued speed and power in the 36-year-old's body, making him attractive in the late middle rounds at a scarce position.

Dodgers | Julio Urias drawing Kershaw comparisons

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 16:54:41 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias is creating hysteria in spring camp this year, and he's drawing comparisons to SP Clayton Kershaw when he was just 20 years of age. "I've only seen him throw a bullpen, but obviously he's really talented," Kershaw said. "I wouldn't look at his results here too carefully." Urias will pitch in a split-squad game Friday, March 6, and management and media have been flocking to watch him pitch. The Dodgers plan to send Urias down to the minors when the season starts, though, regardless of how impressive he is in camp. However, nobody is ruling out a call-up this year, even though Urias is only 18 years old.

Fantasy Tip: The Dodgers don't want to rush Urias' development and path to the majors at such a young age, but if he continues to dominate in the minors this year, he may force their hand. Don't rule it out. Urias should be firmly on the radar dynasty and keeper league owners, but those in standard formats can wait to try to pluck him off the waiver wire if he makes his MLB debut in 2015.

Dodgers | Zack Greinke throws bullpen

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:58:09 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zack Greinke (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, March 3, and manager Don Mattingly said Greinke has progressed steadily since receiving a precautionary elbow injection.

Fantasy Tip: The Dodgers are being extremely cautious with Greinke this early in the spring. It doesn't appear that fantasy owners should be worried with the health of Greinke's right elbow at this time. You can continue to consider him a fantasy ace worth an early-rounds selection in drafts.

Dodgers | Jimmy Rollins likely to lead off

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 09:47:59 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SS Jimmy Rollins will lead off in the team's Cactus League opener against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, March 4, and manager Don Mattingly is pretty sure that Rollins will continue to be the leadoff hitter this season. Rollins stole 28 bases last year with the Philadelphia Phillies, and Mattingly said the team really doesn't have a better candidate at the top spot.

Fantasy Tip: At age 36, Rollins isn't a very intriguing fantasy baseball shortstop anymore, especially with the move to the Dodgers and a pitcher-friendly ballpark. However, he could be undervalued for his power-speed combo, and hitting at the top of the L.A. order won't hurt his run production.

Dodgers | Joel Peralta throws bullpen

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:09:45 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Joel Peralta (shoulder) felt fine after a bullpen session Monday, March 2.

Fantasy Tip: As a reliever, Peralta won't need many spring outings or innings to be ready for opening day. He's the likely candidate to see most of the save opportunities in the ninth inning with Kenley Jansen (foot) out at least the first month. Target Peralta as a cheap saves source at the tail end of deep mixed leagues or as a handcuff to Jansen.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu feels fine

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:07:03 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (back) said he felt fine after throwing a bullpen session Monday, March 2.

Fantasy Tip: Ryu's injury doesn't look to be serious. If he doesn't have anymore setbacks, he should be perfectly good to go for the start of the regular season. Ryu is an undervalued starting pitching commodity that posted an impressive 8.2 K/9 in 2014. He also pitches for one of the better National League teams and resides in an excellent pitcher's park.

Dodgers | Clayton Kershaw to start opening day

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 09:57:43 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw will make the start on opening day, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: Surprise, surprise. Kershaw is easily baseball's best all-around starting pitcher by a mile. He'll likely come off the board in the middle of the first round in fantasy baseball drafts.

Dodgers | Alexander Guerrero averse to minors trip

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 18:09:47 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Alexander Guerrero will see action at second base, third base and the outfield during the spring. He has a clause in his contract that stays he cannot be optioned to the minors without his permission after the first year of his deal. The team will either have to keep him on the roster, trade him or cut him. "The team does not know what they are going to do, but all I can control is working hard and they will get the final word," Guerrero said Sunday, March 1. "I don't want to go down. I'm not going down. I feel like I can get better here at this level and play every day."

Fantasy Tip: Guerrero has Darwin Barney and Justin Turner to leapfrog for playing time, and he will need a good spring to earn his way onto the roster. He obviously has a ton of upside, but his fantasy outlook is very uncertain at this juncture of the spring.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu may throw Monday

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 09:55:47 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (back) may throw a bullpen session Monday, March 2, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: Ryu has been dealing with back problems for the last several days, but the injury does not appear to be serious. He can take things slowly during spring training to make sure he is ready for the season. Ryu could be an option in the later rounds of mixed league drafts this season.

Dodgers | Julio Urias an impressive youngster

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 16:34:14 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias, who is just 18 years old and hasn't pitched above Class A, could become a big storyline in 2015. There are some that think he could pitch in the majors this year, which would make him the first 18-year-old to start a major league game since Jose Rijo in 1984. Urias has a 2.41 ERA AND 1.11 WHIP in 142 innings in the last two years in the minors. He looks to be 20 to 30 pounds lighter than he was in 2014 this spring, and the team continues to be impressed with his maturation at such a young age. Manager Don Mattingly doesn't expect to see Urias in the majors this year, as the team wants to focus on development instead of rushing him.

Fantasy Tip: Even at such a young age, Urias is worthy of consideration in dynasty and keeper leagues because of his off-the-charts talent. He'll likely move up to Class AA or AAA this season, and a call-up to the big leagues isn't out of the question. In standard single-year formats, you wouldn't want to draft him, but he'd be worth an immediate waiver wire pick-up if he's called up at any point in 2015.

Dodgers | Joel Peralta should be ready

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:22:46 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Joel Peralta (shoulder) is behind schedule in camp because of right shoulder stiffness, but manager Don Mattingly is confident that Peralta will be ready for opening day. Peralta expects to throw his first bullpen session next week. The good news is that Peralta doesn't need many exhibition outings to be game-ready.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta is likely the leading candidate to fill in in the ninth inning with Kenley Jansen (foot) sidelined to start the season. The other candidates would be J.P. Howell and Brandon League. If you're speculating at the tail end of fantasy drafts, Peralta should be your pick, but keep an eye on how he recovers from his shoulder stiffness.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu undergoes MRI

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 08:47:57 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (back) underwent an MRI on his back, which came back negative. Ryu is not participating in drills Thursday, Feb. 26.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Ryu is dealing with a minor injury and should be fine in the near future. He is coming off a solid season in 2014 and could be a solid option in the later rounds of mixed league drafts this season.

Dodgers | Zack Greinke feels fine

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 10:17:38 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zack Greinke (elbow) threw his first bullpen session since an elbow injection Tuesday, Feb. 24, and he said he's not worried about the health of his right elbow. "It's the same as I did last year, at the end of the year, at the beginning of the year, in the offseason and the last time I talked to you guys," said Greinke. "There's always a little bit of concern." Greinke had received a lubricating injection of hyaluronic acid, which he's had in previous springs, in order to aid arthritic joints. He threw 24 fastballs Tuesday in what he said was "normal bullpen percentage" intensity. Greinke said he's "maybe three or four days behind some people. That's not a big deal."

Fantasy Tip: Greinke's elbow concern shouldn't concern you too much when drafting. Greinke should continue to sit firmly in the middle of the group of pitchers that is acceptable for a No. 1 pitcher for a fantasy baseball squad.

Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu has back tightness

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 09:35:10 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (back) is dealing with "mid-back tightness," and he will not work out Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how serious Ryu's injury is at this point. Keep an eye on his progress through the rest of the week. Ryu is an undervalued commodity that pitches in a nice pitcher's park. He posted an ERA of 3.38 and a WHIP of 1.19 last year while raising his K/9 by a full strikeout to 8.2. He's a nice target in the later rounds of mixed drafts.
