Los Angeles Dodgers news, rumors and injuries

Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Alexander Guerrero will see action at second base, third base and the outfield during the spring. He has a clause in his contract that stays he cannot be optioned to the minors without his permission after the first year of his deal. The team will either have to keep him on the roster, trade him or cut him. "The team does not know what they are going to do, but all I can control is working hard and they will get the final word," Guerrero said Sunday, March 1. "I don't want to go down. I'm not going down. I feel like I can get better here at this level and play every day."
Fantasy Tip: Guerrero has Darwin Barney and Justin Turner to leapfrog for playing time, and he will need a good spring to earn his way onto the roster. He obviously has a ton of upside, but his fantasy outlook is very uncertain at this juncture of the spring.

Fantasy Tip: Ryu has been dealing with back problems for the last several days, but the injury does not appear to be serious. He can take things slowly during spring training to make sure he is ready for the season. Ryu could be an option in the later rounds of mixed league drafts this season.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Julio Urias, who is just 18 years old and hasn't pitched above Class A, could become a big storyline in 2015. There are some that think he could pitch in the majors this year, which would make him the first 18-year-old to start a major league game since Jose Rijo in 1984. Urias has a 2.41 ERA AND 1.11 WHIP in 142 innings in the last two years in the minors. He looks to be 20 to 30 pounds lighter than he was in 2014 this spring, and the team continues to be impressed with his maturation at such a young age. Manager Don Mattingly doesn't expect to see Urias in the majors this year, as the team wants to focus on development instead of rushing him.
Fantasy Tip: Even at such a young age, Urias is worthy of consideration in dynasty and keeper leagues because of his off-the-charts talent. He'll likely move up to Class AA or AAA this season, and a call-up to the big leagues isn't out of the question. In standard single-year formats, you wouldn't want to draft him, but he'd be worth an immediate waiver wire pick-up if he's called up at any point in 2015.

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Joel Peralta (shoulder) is behind schedule in camp because of right shoulder stiffness, but manager Don Mattingly is confident that Peralta will be ready for opening day. Peralta expects to throw his first bullpen session next week. The good news is that Peralta doesn't need many exhibition outings to be game-ready.
Fantasy Tip: Peralta is likely the leading candidate to fill in in the ninth inning with Kenley Jansen (foot) sidelined to start the season. The other candidates would be J.P. Howell and Brandon League. If you're speculating at the tail end of fantasy drafts, Peralta should be your pick, but keep an eye on how he recovers from his shoulder stiffness.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Ryu is dealing with a minor injury and should be fine in the near future. He is coming off a solid season in 2014 and could be a solid option in the later rounds of mixed league drafts this season.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zack Greinke (elbow) threw his first bullpen session since an elbow injection Tuesday, Feb. 24, and he said he's not worried about the health of his right elbow. "It's the same as I did last year, at the end of the year, at the beginning of the year, in the offseason and the last time I talked to you guys," said Greinke. "There's always a little bit of concern." Greinke had received a lubricating injection of hyaluronic acid, which he's had in previous springs, in order to aid arthritic joints. He threw 24 fastballs Tuesday in what he said was "normal bullpen percentage" intensity. Greinke said he's "maybe three or four days behind some people. That's not a big deal."
Fantasy Tip: Greinke's elbow concern shouldn't concern you too much when drafting. Greinke should continue to sit firmly in the middle of the group of pitchers that is acceptable for a No. 1 pitcher for a fantasy baseball squad.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how serious Ryu's injury is at this point. Keep an eye on his progress through the rest of the week. Ryu is an undervalued commodity that pitches in a nice pitcher's park. He posted an ERA of 3.38 and a WHIP of 1.19 last year while raising his K/9 by a full strikeout to 8.2. He's a nice target in the later rounds of mixed drafts.

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Andre Ethier said he prefers to be traded if he doesn't have a starting outfield job this year. The team's current plans have OF Carl Crawford in left, rookie OF Joc Pederson in center and OF Yasiel Puig in right field, with Ethier as the fourth outfielder. Ethier hit .249 with four home runs and a .691 OPS in 331 at-bats last year, and his production has declined since 2012.
Fantasy Tip: Pederson isn't guaranteed the starting center field job, he'll have to earn it in camp by beating out Ethier. Regardless, Pederson is an up-and-coming prospect that will be taken in the middle rounds of mixed-league drafts, while Ethier is an afterthought. If Ethier is dealt before the start of the season, he could find some value as outfield depth if he lands in the right situation.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke having elbow woes so early is concerning. He's a good SP2 candidate in traditional leagues if all checks out.

Los Angeles Dodgers RP Kenley Jansen (foot) said an MRI revealed the growth in his foot was not life-threatening and was mostly just fluid in the bone. Jansen noted doctors told him the problem was fixed and is not expected to return. The current recovery timeline has a possible return by early May.
Fantasy Tip: Jansen has a career 14.0 K/9 mark and 97 saves over the past thee seasons, so he'll be a worthy stash candidate in all leagues. He is a viable selection among the middle tiers of closers on draft day. Currently, the closing duties are up in the air, so check back for updates on both Jansen's recovery timetable and who will fill in for him.

Free-agent RP Dustin McGowan (Blue Jays) signed a one-year, $507,500 deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, Feb. 23. He'll receive a $1 million bonus if he's on the roster out of spring training, and he can make an extra $1.5 million in incentives. The Dodgers will be without RP Kenley Jansen (foot) for at least a month to start the year.
Fantasy Tip: McGowan comes in and will compete for a late-inning bullpen job with Jansen out of the picture to start the season. There's a chance he could be considered for ninth-inning duties in the meantime, but it's unlikely given LA's other options like Joel Peralta, Brandon League and J.P. Howell.
Mon, 23 Feb 2015 09:00:48 -0800
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brandon Beachy (elbow) has "no doubt" that he will return to pitch at a high level, but he said he'll take as much time as he needs after having Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. Beachy is expected to be ready to pitch around midseason. He'll make $2.75 million guaranteed on his one-year deal, and the 2016 option will be worth between $3 million and $6 million, depending on how much he pitches this year.
Fantasy Tip: Beachy won't be much use to fantasy baseball owners this year. He could be worth a look off the waiver wire in the second half of the season, but it's more likely that he won't be worth your attention until the 2016 season.
Sun, 22 Feb 2015 19:06:06 -0800
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brett Anderson (back) is having his workload managed as he returns from lower back surgery. Every Los Angeles pitcher who threw a bullpen session Friday, Feb. 20, threw again Sunday, Feb. 22, except for Anderson. He played extra catch instead expects to throw a bullpen session Monday, Feb. 23.
Fantasy Tip: Anderson is expected to be the team's fifth starter. In many places that wouldn't mean much for fantasy owners, but the Dodgers will be contenders and he could face some favorable pitching matchups if he can revert back to form and stay healthy.
Sun, 22 Feb 2015 14:39:18 -0800
Fantasy Tip: With closer Kenley Jansen sidelined for 8-12 weeks, this move would likely be to shore up the Dodgers bullpen. McGowan's fantasy value should be watched during spring as he posted a 3.35 ERA and 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched after Toronto sent him to the bullpen.
