Royals | Kendrys Morales to miss several days

Thu, 26 May 2016 17:56:26 -0700

Kansas City Royals DH Kendrys Morales (finger) is expected to miss three to four days because of a sprained right middle finger.

Fantasy Tip: Morales is batting .187 with five home runs and 18 RBI through 45 games and has collected just two hits in his last 17 at-bats. He can be dropped in shallow mixed leagues and doesn't have much fantasy value outside of AL-only leagues at this point.

Royals | Kansas City-Chicago game postponed

Thu, 26 May 2016 16:02:30 -0700

The game between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox Thursday, May 26, has been postponed due to rain and high winds.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to make lineup substitutions where you can, and especially in daily contests. There is currently no makeup date for the game.

Royals | Mike Moustakas out for the rest of 2016

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:43:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) will miss the remainder of the season, manager Ned Yost announced Thursday, May 26. Yost noted Moustakas will be ready for spring training next year.

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas can be replaced in all seasonal leagues. Cheslor Cuthbert projects to see the bulk of starts at the third base going forward, but through 110 plate appearances for Kansas City over the past two seasons, he has returned an underwhelming .229/.264/.353 slash line. Cuthbert is a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Royals | Chris Young close to returning

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:47:57 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young (forearm) looked fantastic during a simulated game and is close to being activated from the disabled list, manager Ned Yost said Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Prior to the injury, Young posted a 6.68 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP through 32 1/3 innings over seven starts. In the majority of leagues, it would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with the 37-year-old veteran.

Royals | Kendrys Morales, Omar Infante sitting

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:47:26 -0700

Kansas City Royals 1B Kendrys Morales and 2B Omar Infante are not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 26. OF Whit Merrifield is starting at second base and hitting second, while OF Brett Eibner is serving as the designated hitter and is batting eighth against Chicago White Sox SP Miguel Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: That's now two straight games Morales has sat out while posting an ugly slash line of .187/.247/.313 with five home runs and 18 RBI. If you own him in deep mixed and AL-only leagues bench him until he shows signs of life. You can consider cutting him in shallow leagues. Merrifield and Eibner could both see decent playing time with the injuries to Mike Moustakas (knee) and Alex Gordon (wrist), so consider adding them for depth in AL leagues for now.

Royals | Mike Moustakas to DL with ACL tear

Thu, 26 May 2016 13:06:19 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee Thursday, May 26. In a corresponding move, OF Brett Eibner was recalled from Class AAA Omaha.

Fantasy Tip: The injury will likely cost Moustakas the remainder of the season, and even in a best-case scenario where he returns late in the year, it likely isn't worth stashing Moustakas in the majority of leagues. In his absence, Cheslor Cuthbert should continue to see the majority of starts at the hot corner. But through 110 plate appearances for Kansas City over the past two seasons, the 23-year-old Cuthbert has returned an underwhelming .229/.264/.353 slash line. He is nothing more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, and that is only because of his likely full-time role. Eibner has hit 29 home run over the past two seasons with Omaha, and he owns a .309/.411/.537 slash line this year. For now, he is a flier grab in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but if Eibner carves out a role with semi-regular starts, he could have more value.

Royals | Dillon Gee struggles against Minnesota

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:49:08 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Dillon Gee (1-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in a loss to the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, May 25, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Gee struggled mightily in his third start of the season against the team with the worst record in the majors, allowing 11 baserunners over four-plus innings. He should be viewed as a risky play for his next start against the Tampa Bay Rays Monday, May 30.

Royals | Mike Moustakas out again

Wed, 25 May 2016 10:07:38 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) remains out of the lineup Wednesday, May 25. 3B Cheslor Cuthbert is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Cuthbert is hitting .255 with three RBI on the season. He's not a potent flyer against Tyler Duffey.

Royals | Two Royals sitting Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 09:34:16 -0700

Kansas City Royals 1B Kendrys Morales and OF Jarrod Dyson are out of the lineup Wednesday, May 25. C Salvador Perez is in at designated hitter and hitting fifth, and OF Whit Merrifield is hitting second.

Fantasy Tip: Salvy has had a good month of May with a .309-3-10 line. He's a daily consideration at catcher. Merrifield is 6-for-18 (.333) with three doubles to begin his career. He's a basement option against Tyler Duffey.

Royals | Omar Infante sitting out

Tue, 24 May 2016 14:43:38 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Omar Infante is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24. OF Whit Merrifield is starting at the keystone and is batting second against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana.

Fantasy Tip: The right-handed Merrifield hit .278 with five home runs and 17 RBI at Class AAA Omaha earlier this year. He's never had double-digit home runs in the minors but does possess speed (32 thefts in 2015). Merrifield could create havoc on the basepaths at the top of the order tonight but doesn't project to fill up the stat sheet otherwise. He's a deep sleeper in daily games.

Royals | Mike Moustakas remains sidelined

Tue, 24 May 2016 14:39:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) is out of the lineup for the second straight day Tuesday, May 24. 3B Cheslor Cuthbert is starting at third base and is hitting eighth against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana.

Fantasy Tip: Moose is dealing with a bruised knee from the collision with Alex Gordon Sunday, but he's listed as day-to-day and could return as soon as tomorrow. Return him to starting lineups everywhere once he's back. Cuthbert has limited upside with a line-drive stroke and mediocre power. That makes him not all that attractive in daily formats while near the bottom of the order.

Royals | Salvador Perez has five hits

Tue, 24 May 2016 00:49:46 -0700

Kansas City Royals C Salvador Perez had five hits Monday, May 23, including a double, triple and a run batted in, as the Royals scored a 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Perez has now hit safely in nine straight games, and his average went from .245 to .270 in this game alone.

Fantasy Tip: Perez has been one of the stronger hitting catchers in American League and mixed fantasy leagues, and as such he should be in your lineup. Perez is solid in all formats and should be activated as quick as possible.

Royals | Alex Gordon's fracture non-surgical

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:57:22 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon's (hand) fracture is non-displaced and non-surgical, which is why he's estimated to be out three to four weeks. He'll be re-evaluated in 10 days.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon was struggling mightily prior to suffering the injury, so hopefully he's able to return to old form when he's back. In the meantime, with the perennial Gold Glove winner on the sidelines, Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando each get a boost and both are worth a look in many formats. Dyson can make a big impact with his speed, while Orlando has been absolutely raking as of late.

Royals | Jarrod Dyson starting in LF

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:17:03 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jarrod Dyson is starting in left field and batting ninth opposite Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco.

Fantasy Tip: Alex Gordon went on the disabled list and is expected to miss three to four weeks, which should open up regular time in left for the 31-year-old speedster. Considering he's racked up more than 25 stolen bases in each of the past four seasons, Dyson can absolutely be of use for all leagues. Paulo Orlando will get a boost as well while Gordon is sidelined.

Royals | Mike Moustakas out Monday

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:15:38 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) is not in the starting lineup Monday, May 23. 2B Whit Merrifield is starting at third base and batting second against Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco.

Fantasy Tip: Moustakas sustained the injury on Sunday, but it's only a minor issue, as he's being considered day-to-day. In the meantime, fantasy owners in all leagues can look past Merrifield, who had a .278/.342/.458 line in Class AAA in 36 ballgames. He's just a backup talent.
