Astros | Lance McCullers logs another 10 Ks

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 22:20:29 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers surrendered one run on five hits over six innings against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, July 27. He walked two and struck out 10 -- the third time in five starts he has reached double digits in K's.

Fantasy Tip: In five July outings, McCullers went 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a whopping 44 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings. If he's still kicking around your waiver wire you should bring him on board now regardless of format.

Astros | Carlos Gomez doesn't think injury is serious

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 22:12:54 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (hamstring) does not believe the hamstring injury he suffered against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, July 27, is serious. He's day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: A legit stud in Milwaukee, Gomez has done little in his season-plus with Houston, including a .215-5-29 line this year. Optimists can continue stashing him based on his speed/power potential, but 2016 is turning into a lost season for Gomez.

Astros | Colby Rasmus snaps 0-for-29 slump

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 22:06:14 -0700

Houston Astros OF Colby Rasmus hit a two-run home run against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, July 27, to end a 0-for-29 stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Rasmus partially blamed his struggles on an ear infection and hinted he was feeling better. His average dropped 20-plus points during that hitless streak, and without his usual power -- seven HRs in April, five since -- Rasmus is a fringe candidate even in deeper mixed leagues.

Astros | Carlos Gomez has strained hamstring

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 18:41:25 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (hamstring) left the game against the New York Yankees Wednesday, July 27, due to a strained right hamstring.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Gomez's injury remains unknown, so keep checking back for updates on his condition. He went 1-for-1 with an RBI before exiting Wednesday's contest and is batting .216 with five home runs and 29 RBI through 79 games this year.

Astros | Luis Valbuena likely won't land on DL

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 18:30:11 -0700

Houston Astros INF Luis Valbuena (hamstring) is not expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list, although his strained right hamstring will keep him sidelined until Friday, July 29. However, manager A.J. Hinch hinted that Valbuena could be held out of the lineup until Saturday, July 30, because the club will face a left-handed pitcher Friday.

Fantasy Tip: As the regular season enters the home stretch, Valbuena could wind up losing playing time to 3B Alex Bregman and INF Yulieski Gurriel. However, he still makes a decent option in daily fantasy contests when healthy.

Astros | Luis Valbuena sitting vs. Yankees

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:42:22 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 27. SS Alex Bregman is starting at third base and batting seventh against New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena left the game with a strained right hamstring injury Tuesday, July 26, so it's worth checking back for updates on his status. He could be in jeopardy of losing playing time going forward but remains a viable own in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Bregman is 0-for-7 to start his career but is a promising youngster with tremendous upside. He should be owned in all deep leagues and monitored universally.

Astros | No Evan Gattis vs. Yankees

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:33:28 -0700

Houston Astros C Evan Gattis is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 27. C Jason Castro is starting behind the plate and batting ninth against New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis checks out as a starting catcher in all fantasy formats because of his elite power at the position. You'll want to sub him out of lineups Wednesday where you can, though. Castro remains a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues.

Astros | Evan Gattis struggling as the DH

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 08:38:52 -0700

Houston Astros C Evan Gattis owns a .304 batting average and a 1.076 OPS when starting behind the plate compared to a .171 average and a .565 OPS as a designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: Gattis' eligibility at catcher is his biggest fantasy asset because he provides rare power from the position. For the year, Gattis has 17 home runs and 42 RBI. Fantasy owners shouldn't read too much into his splits when starting behind the plate compared to his numbers as the designated hitter.

Astros | Luis Valbuena leaves game

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 19:13:12 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (hamstring) left the game Tuesday, July 26, against the New York Yankees due to a strained right hamstring.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena should be reserved in all fantasy leagues which allow daily moves until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Astros | Three Astros starts not playing

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 14:12:23 -0700

Houston Astros OF Preston Tucker, OF Colby Rasmus and C Jason Castro are not in the starting lineup against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Tuesday, July 26. 3B Luis Valbuena will start at third base, while SS Alex Bregman will serve as the designated hitter. 1B Marwin Gonzalez will start at first base and is batting second. C Evan Gattis will start at catcher and is batting fifth. OF Jake Marisnick will start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is currently on a nine-game hitting streak and has two RBI during that span. Gonzalez can be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues during his hot streak. Gattis should be an attractive option in leagues because he is hitting .278 with three home runs and five RBI over the last seven days. Marisnick is hitting .333 this month but is still not a strong fantasy option.

Astros | Alex Bregman struggles in debut

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 23:40:55 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Alex Bregman went hitless in four at-bats with a pair of strikeouts Monday, July 25, against the New York Yankees in his major league debut.

Fantasy Tip: Bregman is expected to see plenty of playing time, and he is worth scooping up in all fantasy formats if available off the waiver wire. He has a ton of potential, and you shouldn't be dissuaded by using him because of Monday's shaky debut.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez rests ankle

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 23:40:27 -0700

Houston Astros INF Marwin Gonzalez (ankle) missed the game Monday, July 25, against the New York Yankees due to the sprained left ankle he suffered Sunday, July 24. "He's doing OK," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We are keeping him out of some baseball activities to monitor his ankle. We'll give him the day off, but I would really like him to play tomorrow if he's capable."

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez should be reserved in all AL-only fantasy leagues which allow daily moves and DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Astros | Dallas Keuchel solid in setback

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 23:39:53 -0700

Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel allowed two earned runs, six hits and no walks with five walks over 7 2/3 innings in a loss Monday, July 25, against the New York Yankees. He threw 74 of his 105 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Keuchel has started to show signs of life lately after an awful start to the season. He has seven straight quality starts, and at least five strikeouts in each of his past four outings. He has re-emerged as a must-start in all fantasy formats.

Astros | Alex Bregman batting sixth against Yankees

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 13:35:51 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Alex Bregman is starting at the hot corner and batting sixth against New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda Monday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Bregman is going to be given every opportunity to carve out a big role through the end of the season. He's worth owning in all fantasy formats because the sky's the limit for the blossoming star. He might not play every day initially, but it also might not take long for him to hit his way into a full-time gig.

Astros | Colby Rasmus sitting vs. Yankees

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 13:28:20 -0700

Houston Astros OF Colby Rasmus is not in the starting lineup Monday, July 25. OF Preston Tucker is starting in left field and batting second against New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Rasmus hit seven home runs in April and has just four since, as he's struggled to the point of finding himself out of the lineup frequently. He isn't worth a roster spot outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Tucker is 3-for-8 with three extra-base hits since being recalled from the minors, and he's a potential flier in daily contests Monday.
