Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Moya has cooled after a strong start, and he's hitting .276 with two RBI this season. Aaron Nola has been great, but Moya is a sneaky low-end flyer in this potent offense.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin is 16-for-28 (.571) with a homer, five RBI and four steals to start his season. Aaron Nola is a tough matchup, but Maybin is a daily consideration at this juncture. Aviles is hitting .139 and has struck out 13 times in 36 at-bats. He's not worth consideration today.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander evened up his record to 4-4 on the year after beating the Philadelphia Phillies in his start Tuesday, May 24. He tossed eight shutout innings, scattering only three hits and two walks while tying a season high with 10 strikeouts.
Fantasy Tip: This was pretty much vintage Verlander on display, as the former MVP and Cy Young winner contributed his best outing of the campaign. It was also the second straight start that Verlander struck out 10, and he's now gone seven innings or more in four consecutive outings, yielding just four combined runs over that span. As a result, the right-hander is a must-start pitcher right now.

Detroit Tigers SP Jordan Zimmermann (groin) plans to try some long toss Friday, May 27, and he could throw off a mound Sunday, May 29. After that, the Tigers will decide to either put him on the disabled list or start him against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann has been one of the better free-agent pitching acquisitions from last offseason. He's 7-2 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in nine starts. A lack of strikeouts (5.9 K/9) has been the knock on him, though, and regression could be in store as the summer months approach. However, if he avoids the DL and starts against the Angels, he'd be a fine play everywhere.

Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler (flu) has been scratched from the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, due to flu-like symptoms. SS Mike Aviles, who was supposed to play in left field, has been moved to second base and will bat eighth. OF Cameron Maybin will now bat leadoff.
Fantasy Tip: Kinsler's absence shifted the lineup around for the evening, most notably with Maybin going to leadoff. He has been the Tigers' hottest hitter in the last week, and Maybin definitely carries increased fantasy value with that hot bat. Aviles' value is still nonexistent.

Fantasy Tip: McCann's numbers have been less than perfect at the plate (.194 at home, .149 during May), and he carries little fantasy value even as a starting catcher. Saltalamacchia has become part of a platoon, but he too has slumped horribly. Right now, the Tigers catching situation is terrible and its fantasy value is negligible.

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, against the Philadelphia Phillies. OF Steven Moya is playing left field and will hit sixth against Phillies SP Jeremy Hellickson. Upton may also miss Wednesday, May 25, as well, but that is not confirmed yet.
Fantasy Tip: Upton may be back in the lineup later this week, but even so his numbers have been less than stellar this season. He has only 37 hits in 43 games and a .223 batting average, but 66 strikeouts in 166 at-bats have made Upton a bad fantasy risk at the plate. Moya has little fantasy value at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has recorded a save in each of his last six appearances and has not allowed a run during that span. He should continue to receive plenty of save opportunities, which makes him a solid starter in most leagues.
Mon, 23 May 2016 20:21:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cabrera has recorded at least one hit in eight of his last nine games and has six multi-hit game during that span. Cabrera is a must-start option in all leagues as long as he is healthy.

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers SP Jordan Zimmermann (groin) was diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain, which is the mildest possible strain. He could avoid the disabled list but has been ruled out for his next start scheduled for Friday, May 27. Manager Brad Ausmus has been optimistic about Zimmermann's prognosis.
Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann has been a great free-agent acquisition for the Tigers with a 7-2 record and 2.52 ERA in nine starts. However, Zimmermann could be in line for some regression and is striking out only 5.9 hitters per nine innings, limiting his fantasy upside. Be careful running him out for his next start after he's skipped this Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has picked it up a bit to get his average over .200, but he's been a massive disappointment for fantasy owners so far with just two home runs and 10 RBI while striking out 66 times in 178 plate appearances. He should be able to bounce back eventually, so he's a prime buy-low candidate. Steven Moya is replacing Upton against Phillies starter Vince Velazquez. Moya doesn't have a homer yet but hasn't been overmatched at the plate. Consider him a sleeper pick in daily setups.
Mon, 23 May 2016 13:30:39 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It looks like Zimmermann can avoid a trip to the DL, but you'll need to plan for a short absence, and he might be a risky play when he makes his next turn in the rotation. Aside from allowing seven earned runs on May 16, he has allowed three earned runs or less in his other eight starts. He's a must-start option in all leagues when healthy, but his 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings leaves a lot to be desired moving forward.

Detroit Tigers OF Cameron Maybin continued to punish American League pitching in his first week back from a 37-game absence due to wrist injury, going 1-for-3 with three RBI in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, May 22.
Fantasy Tip: Maybin has brought a serious spark to the Tigers' lineup following his 37-game absence despite hitting seventh and is batting .600 after six games. The three-RBI effort was his first of the season and made up for the fact that Sunday was the first time the 29-year-old didn't steal a base or homer since his return. Maybin is simply too hot to keep out of any fantasy lineup right now.
Sun, 22 May 2016 12:58:28 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Cabrera will be able to return to the lineup in the next game or two. Cabrera is a must-start option when he is healthy. Victor Martinez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Andrew Romine are options to start at first base and could be options in daily fantasy leagues.

Detroit Tigers SP Jordan Zimmermann (groin) departed in the sixth inning Sunday, May 22, against the Tampa Bay Rays. Zimmermann, who allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings, was diagnosed with a strained right groin.
Fantasy Tip: There is no way of telling at the moment whether or not Zimmermann will require a stint on the disabled list or not. The 29-year-old has predictably been unable to sustain his otherworldly opening month (5-0, 0.55 in April), although a 4.88 ERA in four May starts probably isn't exactly what owners were expecting either. Stay tuned for updates, although a date against the Oakland Athletics looks appealing next weekend if he can make the start.
