Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera continues to be one of the best pure hitters in the game, but at age 32 his skills are certainly starting to decline and he's a much bigger injury risk. No longer will he be a lock as a top-five fantasy baseball pick in 2016, but there's still plenty of reason to consider him later in the first round.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is batting .324 in 34 at-bats this season but should only be used in FantasyScore as a source of salary cap relief.

Fantasy Tip: Marte ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is batting just .221 with four home runs and 11 RBIs through 77 at-bats. He is not a great first base option in FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Over his final 11 starts, Verlander ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) returned a 2.12 ERA with 73 strikeouts through 76 1/3 innings. He also limited opposing hitters to a .194/.250/.286 slash line during the stretch. He stands as a viable mid-round option for drafts next spring, and the longer he lasts, the more upside there is for 2016.

Detroit Tigers SP Alfredo Simon (knee) never told the team he was hurt. Manager Brad Ausmus and head athletic trainer Kevin Rand both said they were surprised to hear Simon say he pitched hurt this season. Rand noted, they were aware Simon had patellar tendinosis. "This is a medical condition that he has," Rand said. "We treated it. We did some different things with him conditioningwise to make it easier for him, and obviously he was able to pitch all season."
Fantasy Tip: Simon ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) is a free agent this offseason, so where he signs will have a slight impact on his fantasy value for 2016. He is nothing more than an only-format and cavernous mixed league option, though. After all, he finished 2015 with a 13-12 record and 5.05 ERA over 31 starts, and Simon allowed five or more earned runs in 11 of those outings.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera's ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) .338 batting average will win him his fourth American League batting title in five years, as he continues to be one of the best pure hitters in baseball. He has seen his power numbers drop off the past two years, though, as he has posted his two lowest slugging percentages since 2004 the past two seasons. Cabrera remains in the Round 1 conversation for drafts next spring.

Fantasy Tip: Moya ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is just 2-for-15 (.133) on the year and isn't a good FantasyScore option against Erik Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: The knee injury partially explains Simon's ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) ineffectiveness for much of the season. He will finish the year with a 13-12 record and 5.05 ERA over 31 starts, with 201 hits allowed over 187 innings. Simon allowed five or more earned runs in 11 of those outings.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are limiting Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) down the stretch as he chases yet another batting title. Make sure he's in the lineup first this weekend before picking him on FantasyScore. Romine ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) should be avoided against Sale this evening.
Fri, 02 Oct 2015 15:28:01 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Sale ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) presents a low-end matchup for the Tigers, and FantasyScore players cannot start anyone from the Detroit lineup with confidence Friday, especially with Miguel Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) limited to pinch-hitting duty for the season.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Martinez ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) in all fantasy formats Wednesday. He has heated up at the dish lately, though, with a .324/.375/.559 slash line over his past 40 plate appearances. FantasyScore players should view Collins ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) as a mid-priced flier and far from a lineup lock Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Season owners chasing counting stats are faced with a tough call over the final days of the season with Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap). He isn't going to play every day, so you may want to surf your waiver wire for upgrades. FantasyScore players have no reason to be excited about Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap). He owns a .192 batting average and .291 slugging percentage for the season, after all.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game. Time is running out for that to occur if he doesn't come back immediately.

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez and C James McCann are not in the lineup against Texas Rangers left-handed SP Cole Hamels Tuesday, Sept. 29. 1B Jefry Marte is starting at first base and batting sixth, while C Bryan Holaday is catching and hitting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Both Marte ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) and Holaday ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) won't give you much of a chance at cashing out on FantasyScore if you gamble on them against Hamels tonight.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (quadriceps) left the game Monday, Sept. 28, against the Texas Rangers due to a sore left quadriceps, according to the team. He will be re-evaluated Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any lingering effects of his injury.
