Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) hasn't pitched at all this season after injuring his triceps late in spring training. He'll need to rebuild the strength in his arm, so he isn't a realistic option to return to the rotation probably for at least another couple of weeks. He's not worth holding in the meantime in shallow mixed leagues, but he could be stashed in deep mixed and AL-only leagues with hope that he can eventually return and be serviceable to fantasy owners.

Fantasy Tip: Iglesias ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has cooled off a bit after his hot month of April. He's going up against Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale tonight, which makes him a rather weak play at FantasyScore.

Detroit Tigers OF Rajai Davis (illness) is likely to receive the start Wednesday, May 6, against a left-handed pitcher, but he has been under the weather and hasn't played since Saturday, May 2, although that's mainly been due to pitching matchups.
Fantasy Tip: A less than 100% Davis ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) going up against Chicago White Sox lefty Chris Sale is a recipe for a bad play at FantasyScore this evening.

Fantasy Tip: Iglesias ($3,300, 6.6% of your cap) appears to be fine. His hot start warrants the start for the price on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Greene ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) had allowed just one earned run in his first three starts combined, and has now allowed 20 earned runs in his last three outings. At this point Greene can't be owned in season-long leagues and he should be left alone on FantasyScore until he starts showing some promising signs.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 5. SS Andrew Romine is starting at shortstop and hitting ninth in the batting order against Chicago White Sox SP Jeff Samardzija.
Fantasy Tip: Romine ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has six hits in just 11 at-bats this year (.545), but he's a very weak option at the 6 for FantasyScore gamers this evening.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) is hoping he can resume throwing if his tests reveal positive results tomorrow. Either way, a return isn't right around the corner for Verlander, and he's not worth holding in shallow mixed leagues at this point. The longer he takes to return, the more value Kyle Lobstein ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) will have in all fantasy leagues.

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez picked up his sixth career win in eight starts against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, May 3, allowing four hits and three runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out four.
Fantasy Tip: Sanchez ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) entered the game with a 1.07 ERA in his previous seven starts against Kansas City, and he didn't disappoint. Although he has struggled overall out of the gate in 2015, Sanchez is still a must-start at FantasyScore whenever he takes the hill against the Royals.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (groin) left the game Sunday, May 3, against the Kansas City Royals with tightness in his left groin. He is listed as day-to-day. Andrew Romine replaced him in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Iglesias ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) has been healthier this season but still has trouble avoiding the injury bug. Keep him out of your lineup for a few days until he's healthy. Romine ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) doesn't have a lot of fantasy value.

Fantasy Tip: This is a noteworthy accomplishment for two reasons. First, Price ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) was shelled for eight earned runs, 10 hits and three walks over just 2 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees in his last outing, and the Royals pace the league in runs against left-handed pitchers this season. There may be another hiccup along the way, but Price is one of the rare pitchers who is in consideration for FantasyScore players whenever he takes the mound.

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is hitting .300 early in the season and already has six stolen bases and 11 runs scored. Davis is a career .254-hitter against righties, but is hitting .286 early in the season. He's an excellent FantasyScore option, despite batting ninth in the order.

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup against the Kansas City Royals Saturday, May 2. OF Rajai Davis will start in right field and DH Victor Martinez will bat in the fifth spot in the lineup, with C Alex Avila hitting sixth.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has six homers and 15 RBIs through 24 games but he is getting the day off because he is hitless in his last 10 at-bats and has struck out in 11 of his last 17 at-bats. Davis ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is batting .389 in his last five games and could be worth a low-end flyer on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are trying to manage Martinez's ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) surgically repaired left knee in the early going, although he played in 21 of the team's 23 games in April. He's expected to avoid a DL stint, too. If his knee improves over time, we're likely to see his numbers improve, as well. Until then, you should consider benching him in standard leagues and avoiding him at FantasyScore.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will not be put on the disabled list to allow his knee some rest, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Ausmus is seeing signs that Martinez's ailing left knee is improving this week. Martinez's early-season struggles are related to him not being able to push off his surgically repaired left knee. He's showed glimpses of power from both sides of the plate this week, and Ausmus doesn't think the knee is bothering him much anymore. "Just by watching him, I can tell (he's getting better)," Ausmus said. "I told him (Wednesday) after the game, he's really close to being where he was. But whenever he seems to square a ball up, it seems to get caught." Martinez is currently hitting .231 with no home runs and nine RBI in 21 games.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has been a disappointment to his owners, but it should come as no surprise to most after he had surgery during spring training. If his knee improves over time, his numbers could be on the rise, but you'll want to avoid him, for now, at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander will probably need around a month to build up arm strength since it'll essentially be his spring training. Look for him sometime in June.
