Tigers | Michael Fulmer to stick around

Fri, 06 May 2016 14:33:08 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Michael Fulmer is expected to make his next turn through the rotation, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Fulmer, one of Detroit's top pitching prospects, looked good in his major league debut but was touched up for five earned runs in five innings Thursday night against the Cleveland Indians. He'll have his ups and downs, but as long as he remains in the bigs, he should be owned in deep mixed and AL setups. Shane Greene's setback should keep Fulmer around for at least a little longer.

Tigers | Shane Greene suffers setback

Fri, 06 May 2016 14:17:58 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Shane Greene (finger) reopened the blister on his right middle finger Thursday, May 5, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Greene is currently on the disabled list because of the blister, so opening it back up will hold him out of action even longer. Greene is nothing more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues because of his underwhelming 6.80 ERA and 5.6 K/9 since the beginning of 2015. Michael Fulmer has been starting in place of Greene, and Fulmer has allowed seven runs through 10 innings over his two starts.

Tigers | J.D. Martinez takes a seat

Fri, 06 May 2016 13:48:10 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 6. 3B Mike Aviles is starting in right field and is hitting in the two-hole against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles doesn't offer much (.231, one RBI in 24 at-bats) but does have two home runs in only five at-bats against Hamels in his career. It's too small a sample size to bank on, though, and even with the cushy lineup spot, Aviles makes for a low-end deep sleeper play in DFS action.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos remains red-hot

Thu, 05 May 2016 18:28:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and scored twice on Thursday, May 5, in a loss against the Cleveland Indians - his sixth multi-hit game in the last seven contests.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos isn't performing quite at the level of Nolan Arenado, Josh Donaldson or Manny Machado, but he's right at the top of the next tier so far. The 24-year-old is hitting .517 with three home runs and 12 RBI during his eight-game hitting streak and appears to be right at home batting behind in the six-hole behind the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Justin Upton. He has an outstanding chance at finishing as a top-five third baseman this season.

Tigers | Cameron Maybin progressing

Thu, 05 May 2016 17:18:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Cameron Maybin (wrist) is hoping to play center field in a rehab game on Friday, May 6, for Class AAA Toledo.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin has made six rehab appearances for Toledo since resuming his rehab assignment last week but hasn't played the field yet. As long as he doesn't suffer a setback, he should return to a left-right platoon with Anthony Gose - at the very least - once he rejoins the big-league club. Maybin's speed makes him worth a stash in most leagues, so owners in need of a boost in steals should consider adding him.

Tigers | Three Detroit regulars out

Thu, 05 May 2016 11:25:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann, SS Jose Iglesias and OF Anthony Gose are not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 5. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is doing the catching and hitting seventh, 3B Mike Aviles is at the 6 and is batting eighth, and SS Andrew Romine is in center field and is hitting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer.

Fantasy Tip: Salty got hot with regular playing time when McCann was on the DL, but has only four hits in his last 29 at-bats (.138). He's a low-end catching option if you're looking to save salary cap space. Aviles and Romine are desperation daily picks and should be avoided.

Tigers | More discipline for Nick Castellanos

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:48:02 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos, who is slashing .368/.376/.586, has learned to lay off pitches in the lower corner of the strike zone. From 2013 until the All-Star break last year, he had a .132 slugging percentage on those pitches. "Everyone has their kryptonite," manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he's learning, I think, to recognize it and lay off it more or at least get a piece of the wood on it and put the pressure on the defense."

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is only 24 and is hitting behind proven sluggers like Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera. He couldn't be in a better situation to see his power and discipline mature, and that's what's happening this year. Castellanos is a real threat to reach 20 homers this year while also contributing a handy average for owners.

Tigers | Anibal Sanchez solid in defeat

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:53:54 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez dropped to 3-3 after losing his latest start Wednesday, May 4, against the Cleveland Indians. He registered seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

Fantasy Tip: It won't go down officially as a quality start, but there's more good here than bad from the 32-year-old veteran. Tonight's outing actually marked a season-high in innings for Sanchez, and he also reached seven strikeouts in a game for the third time in six tries. His ERA may not look very desirable at the moment, but Sanchez is showing signs he can settle in comfortably.

Tigers | Justin Verlander roughed up

Tue, 03 May 2016 19:09:53 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander went five innings and gave up seven runs Tuesday, May 3, against the Cleveland Indians. He scattered eight hits, three walks and struck out only two.

Fantasy Tip: This is now the second time Verlander has given up seven runs in an outing this year in only six starts. While he now owns a 6.49 ERA, he's pitched better than that, as the rest of his outings have gone for quality starts, and he's averaging almost a strikeout per inning. Owners shouldn't give up on the former AL MVP and Cy Young winner just yet.

Tigers | James McCann back in lineup

Tue, 03 May 2016 11:06:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) is back in the starting lineup and is hitting seventh against Cleveland Indians SP Josh Tomlin Tuesday, May 3. C Jarrod Saltalamaccchia returns to the bench.

Fantasy Tip: McCann's return likely returns Salty to more of a backup role, even though he hit six home runs with McCann sidelined. Neither backstop is anything more than a second catcher in two-catcher leagues, and Saltalamacchia's value for 2016 has likely already peaked.

Tigers | James McCann back from DL

Tue, 03 May 2016 11:02:59 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: When McCann was on the DL, Jarrod Saltalamacchia took the starting job by force and ran with it, hitting six home runs and driving in 16. Salty is only hitting .233, though, and McCann figures to eventually take over the majority of starts behind the dish. However, McCann is simply a second catcher in two-catcher or AL-only setups.

Tigers | Victor Martinez coming off huge week

Mon, 02 May 2016 12:01:11 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez went 14-for-27 (.519 batting average) through his past seven games with eight runs, five doubles, three home runs and eight RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez currently leads the American League in OPS (1.072) and has 14 runs, five home runs and 18 RBI to start the season. He is well on his way to a huge rebound showing in 2016, and barring an injury, could be one of the biggest values of spring drafts. Start Martinez confidently going forward.

Tigers | Jordan Zimmermann aces AL test in April

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:54:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Jordan Zimmermann went 5-0 with a 0.55 ERA and 23 strikeouts through 33 innings in April.

Fantasy Tip: Moving to the American League was expected to hurt Zimmermann's fantasy value, especially after his negative regression in 2015 (3.66 ERA and 3.75 FIP). It hasn't been the case, though, and besides the underwhelming strikeout numbers (6.3 K/9), Zimmermann has been an excellent fantasy option thus far. View him as a solid mid-rotation arm for your fantasy roster going forward.

Tigers | Jordan Zimmermann improves to 5-0

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 16:09:52 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Jordan Zimmermann allowed a run on six hits and struck out seven over seven innings to beat the Minnesota Twins Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann's ERA actually rose to 0.55 to close out a brilliant April. He's pitching like an SP1 now and is a daily consideration whenever his turn comes up.

Tigers | James McCann could return Tuesday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:36:13 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann (ankle) is expected to play in two more rehab games with Class AAA Toledo before rejoining the parent club Tuesday, May 3, for the series against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: McCann is just 2-for-15 with two RBI through his first four rehab games and may not receive as much playing time after he returns due to the performance of C Jarrod Saltalamacchia in his absence. Owners in all fantasy formats should avoid using McCann until he can demonstrate that he is completely healthy.
