Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Soria should be owned in all leagues at this point, and given Nathan's shaky health and performance the last couple of years, Soria could definitely find himself pitching in the ninth inning a lot this season.

Fantasy Tip: Price ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) has not allowed a run in 14 1/3 innings to start the 2015 season, and he's fanned 11 hitters. He is a strong FantasyScore option almost every time out, especially with a strong offense backing him.

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is getting the nod again since Victor Martinez (knee) is taking another day off. Despite hitting a home run Wednesday, Davis loses some fantasy appeal by dropping to the ninth spot. He also hit only .247 with four home runs in 312 at-bats against right-handers in 2014.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) won't make his season debut Tuesday, April 21, instead SP Kyle Lobstein will make his second start of the season. Verlander cut short his simulated game Wednesday, April 15.
Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) has really come along slowly in his recovery from a strained triceps in his right arm. After such a long layoff from spring training, it isn't advised to use him in his season debut, whenever that may be. Lobstein ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will be a midrange starting pitcher option on Tuesday against the New York Yankees at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has had several days to rest his troublesome knee, so he should be just fine for the rest of the weekend. Despite facing White Sox starter Chris Sale tomorrow, V-Mart may still be a good play at FantasyScore. Martinez is 15-for-29 (.517) with three homers and six RBI in his career against the southpaw batting from the right side.

Updating an earlier report, Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) is out of the lineup Friday, April 17, due to soreness in his knee, according to manager Brad Ausmus. The team is hopeful Martinez can serve as a pinch-hitter.
Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($5,100, 10.2% of your cap) is likely questionable for the rest of the weekend against the Chicago White Sox. Rajai Davis ($2,700, 5.4% of your cap) already plays a fair amount, but he will probably be in the lineup while Martinez is out. He's a great low-end flyer on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($5,100, 10.2% of your cap) must still be affected by the knee ailment that crept up earlier in the week. Yoenis Cespedes ($4,200, 8.4%) gets the partial day off at DH and is a daily OF consideration on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Price ($8,900, 17.8% of cap) hasn't allowed an earned run through two starts this season, and the White Sox are off to a slow start offensively, hitting .230 as a team and ranking 24th in runs scored. There is potential for a big game from Price, but he isn't a must-start option at FantasyScore at his high price tag on a night when there are plenty of options available.

Detroit Tigers SP David Price will start Friday, April 17, against the Chicago White Sox. He takes a 21 ⅔ regular season scoreless inning streak into the game. He hasn't allowed a run in his past three regular season starts.
Fantasy Tip: Price has been right lately for FantasyScore owners at $8,900 (or 17.8% of cap). He has also been right at Comerica Park, too, going 7-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 12 career appearances (10 starts), so shell out the big bumps for him Friday.

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) is expected to return to the closer role when healthy, according to manager Brad Ausmus. "That's the plan," Ausmus said Wednesday, April 15. "We'll see what happens, but that's the plan. The most important thing is to get him back. Our bullpen is stronger with Joe in it."
Fantasy Tip: Ausmus' endorsement is encouraging for Nathan owners, however those who added speculative shares of Joakim Soria shouldn't cut bait upon Nathan's return. Nathan, 40, has a lot of miles on his arm, and with an arm injury already on the books for 2015, he is at risk of losing his closing gig in short order.
Wed, 15 Apr 2015 13:47:24 -0700
Fantasy Tip: While Nathan is worth stashing in a DL slot, there is no guarantee he'll return to the closer role. Joakim Soria has three saves and five games finished in Nathan's absence, and Soria has the better arm and pitching arsenal. Soria should be owned in all formats. Continue to check back for updates on Nathan's return timeline and for any announcements on his role when he does rejoin the club.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) said his simulated game was cut short Wednesday, April 15, because of fatigue. He did not feel any pain or grabbing in his right shoulder and threw all his pitches, however he did cut back on throwing curve balls in the third inning.
Fantasy Tip: It is likely wise to avoid any temptation of starting Verlander in FantasyScore contests until he can return and pitch without restrictions. Plus, the jury is still out on whether Verlander can return to being a reliable starter. Taking a wait-and-see approach is likely best in all formats.

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is showing more plate discipline than he did in 2014. He already has four walks this season after not reaching four walks last year until June. Castellanos hit .400 (30-for-75) on the first pitch in 2014, and eight of his 11 homers came on the first pitch. "That's what makes me good," Castellanos said. "Staying aggressive. There's a fine line between being aggressive and being anxious. You want to stay aggressive on good pitches." He also said he is starting to lay off sliders and changeups that righties throw him that are out of the zone.
Fantasy Tip: Castellanos ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is off to a bit of a slow start in 2015, hitting .194 (6-for-31), but he does have a home run and a triple. Against the Pittsburgh Pirates and lefty Francisco Liriano Wednesday, Castellanos doesn't look too appealing at FantasyScore after hitting .237 with three of his eight home runs against lefties in 139 at-bats.
Wed, 15 Apr 2015 11:23:40 -0700
Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed SP Francisco Liriano Wednesday, April 15. C James McCann is catching and hitting seventh in the batting order.
Fantasy Tip: McCann ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has only 20 total major league at-bats to his name. He's a very weak daily play today against Liriano and the Pirates.
Wed, 15 Apr 2015 11:18:56 -0700
Detroit Tigers OF Rajai Davis is starting in center field and hitting leadoff for the second straight day against Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed SP Francisco Liriano Wednesday, April 15. OF Anthony Gose will start on the bench again.
Fantasy Tip: Davis ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is expected to start against lefties this year while in a platoon with Gose. Davis should be in consideration for a FantasyScore lineup spot today after hitting .356 with four of his eight home runs against lefties in 2014. He also has three stolen bases already this year.
