Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers weren't considered a big landing point for Zimmermann, although it is no secret Detroit wanted a big-name pitcher or two to upgrade that staff. Zimmermann could be an early-round draft candidate in AL leagues or an early to middle-round selection in the mixed leagues if this comes true.

Fantasy Tip: Apparently the Tigers no longer think Soria can get the job done or they are fairly high on K-Rod. Soria will be a decent relief option in later rounds of fantasy drafts, just so long as you know he won't be in the Motor City.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin's 2015 campaign was a tale of two halves. Before the All-Star break, he owned a .289/.356/.418 slash line with eight home runs and 15 stolen bases, but he went to the tune of .240/.289/.311 in the second half with just two home runs and eight steals. There is still upside, though, especially if Maybin can lock down the lead-off job atop a potent Detroit lineup. Monitoring his projected role with the Tigers in spring training is recommended.

Fantasy Tip: Fister went 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA during an injury-plagued 2015 season that saw him lose his spot in the Nats' starting rotation down the stretch. He experienced a great deal of success with Detroit from 2011 to 2013 and it is expected that he would be used as a starter regardless of which team he ends up with. Fister should be available in the middle or later rounds of drafts for single-universe and deep mixed leagues next spring.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers have long had issues with their bullpen, and K-Rod could slide in as the closer. The team was shopping around the trade market for some of the top closing options, but they balked at the price. K-Rod makes sense. He'll be 34 in 2016, and his stuff plays much better in the NL. However, you can't deny his results the last couple of years with 82 saves in 89 chances. His K-rate isn't at an elite level anymore, but it's holding firm at 9.79 K/9. He'll be a low-end second closer in traditional leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo is one of those second-tier pitchers off the free-agent top level of starters like David Price and Zack Greinke. Gallardo could see an upswing in his numbers if he leaves Texas for the confines of Detroit.

Fantasy Tip: Samardzija really struggled in 2015, but there is upside for a bounce-back showing next season, especially if he lands back in the National League. Kennedy leaving pitcher-friendly PETCO Park can't be spun as a positive, and while he has shown flashes throughout his career, he isn't a matchup-proof starter in the majority of seasonal leagues. Landing spots will significantly impact where Samardzija and Kennedy will rank for fantasy drafts this spring.

The Detroit Tigers are one of about six teams apparently discussing a deal for San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel. Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) is a name the Tigers are discussing, too. The Tigers could also look at trading for Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon.
Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel had a down year in his first season in San Diego, but he remains an elite fantasy baseball closing option wherever he's pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon finished his season in disappointing fashion, being sent home for an apparent lack of effort. Regardless, he has the best stuff of Detroit's currently back-end relievers and is best suited for the closing role entering 2016, depending on who the Tigers bring in from outside the organization. Despite rough overall numbers in 2015, Rondon should be targeted as a under-the-radar closing option later in fantasy drafts.

The Detroit Tigers are said to be willing to consider re-signing RP Joe Nathan (elbow) to a minor league deal. Nathan is expected to be ready to return a month or two into the season and is expected to resume throwing soon.
Fantasy Tip: Nathan is a previously elite closer but is now 40 and is coming off his second Tommy John surgery. There should be no expectations surrounding him for fantasy owners in any formats entering the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Soria could be a midrange closer option in fantasy drafts depending on where he latches on.

The Detroit Tigers are reportedly interested in bringing back impending free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates), according to a source familiar with the club's thinking. The Tigers and Soria's camp are expected to have discussions during next week's general managers' meetings.
Fantasy Tip: Soria posted a 2.85 ERA over 43 appearances for Detroit in 2015, with 23 saves in 26 opportunities, before being dealt to Pittsburgh after the team fell out of contention. Although he doesn't throw as hard as he used to, his control remains impressive and he should attract plenty of interest in a relatively weak free-agent crop of closers.

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan's (elbow) 2016 option for $10 million was declined by the Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 3, making him a free agent. Instead, the Tigers will pay him a $1 million buyout. Nathan suffered an elbow injury in April that ended his season, and he underwent his second Tommy John surgery as a result. Nathan still plans to return when he's done with his rehab.
Fantasy Tip: Nathan is a 40-year-old reliever coming off his second TJS of his career, so he won't be on anyone's fantasy radar going into 2016. He'll likely land somewhere on a minor league deal and could factor into a team's bullpen situation as a late-inning setup man, but he's highly unlikely to be closing again.

Fantasy Tip: Norris is a promising young left-handed pitcher that should have a rotation spot locked up in spring training next season for the Tigers. He's mainly useful for owners in AL-only leagues but is worth a flier in deep mixed formats, as well.

Detroit Tigers SP Daniel Norris (thyroid), who was diagnosed with a cancerous growth on his thyroid earlier this year, is expected to make a full recovery and be with Detroit in spring training next year. The five-year relative survival rate is high for those diagnosed with thyroid cancer in its early stages, according to the American Cancer Society web site.
Fantasy Tip: Norris has a good chance of beating this since his cancer was caught in the early stages. If he recovers well from his surgery in the offseason, this young lefty with upside is a fine late-round flier in deep mixed fantasy leagues.
