Fantasy Tip: Martinez has become a great all-around hitter that has power to all fields. He's an elite source of pop for fantasy baseball teams, and he resides in a very strong Detroit lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Relatively speaking, that's actually quite a bargain for one of the game's brightest rising stars. Martinez is coming off the definition of a breakout season in 2015, in which he hit .282/.344/.535 with 38 home runs and 102 RBI, en route to being selected to the All-Star team for the first time. He should keep it going in the upcoming campaign.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is looking for a one-year deal worth $8 million in arbitration, while the Tigers have countered with a $6 million offer. The 28-year-old hit .282 with 38 home runs and 102 RBIs in 158 games last season and makes a solid OF2 in traditional fantasy leagues, especially since he's in the prime of his career.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander's fastball averaged 92.8 mph the first time through the order in 2015, 93.6 mph the second time through and 94.0 mph the third time through. He also used his fastball less as games went on. He used it 66.4% of the time the first time through, 53.7% the second time and 55.3% of the time the third time through the order. While Verlander gained velocity on his fastball, which he threw less often the deeper in the game he went, he got hit harder as the game went on. He allowed a .497, .705 and a .709 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, respectively, the first three times through the order. He had a 22.3% strikeout rate with the fastball last year, his highest ever, and much better than his career mark of 17.4%. Verlander often used a high-spin fastball high in the zone to get swing-and-misses.
Fantasy Tip: So while Verlander's velocity was down to 93.5 mph last season, there are still encouraging signs he can still be a high-quality pitcher at 33. Verlander can probably be had as an SP3 in drafts.

Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon (illness) recently became infected with the chikungunya virus, which is an illness that is transmitted to people through mosquitoes, according to general manager Al Avila. He is expected to be completely healthy by the opening of spring training camp.
Fantasy Tip: As a result of the club's offseason acquisition of Francisco Rodriguez, Rondon will no longer be counted on to close games, although he could see an occasional save opportunity here and there. The 25-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with a 5.81 ERA, 1.613 WHIP and five saves in 35 appearances last season and isn't worth monitoring outside of AL-only leagues.

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez wants to sign a long-term contract to remain with the organization for the remainder of his career. "This team gave me the opportunity and I would love to stay here as long as I can and hopefully finish my career next to Miggy (Miguel Cabrera), next to Victor (Victor Martinez) and stuff like that," Martinez said. "That would be awesome and something that I would love."
Fantasy Tip: Martinez has put together two consecutive monster fantasy seasons, and in the heart of his prime, stands to have another huge showing in 2016. He moves the needle significantly across runs, home runs, RBI and batting average, and Martinez is an excellent target after the top-tier outfielders come off the board on draft day. That said, Martinez wasn't far from a top-tier contributor in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has serious power and is in a much better offense than he was with the San Diego Padres last year. He's also in a better hitting environment. Consider him a high-end second fantasy outfielder in 2016.

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton is expected to play left field in 2016. Upton hit just .191 with three of his 26 home runs against left-handed pitching with the San Diego Padres last year. However, he's hit .324 in nine games in his career at Comerica Park, which is his third-best batting average in any stadium in which he's played a minimum of five games.
Fantasy Tip: Upton's fantasy value only goes up with the move to Detroit in a much better hitting environment and in a much better offensive lineup. He should be seen as a high-end second outfielder on draft day this spring.

Fantasy Tip: J-Up will be among the best lineup he has been around in his career and should have the chance for a monster year. Upton is a high-end OF2 in fantasy.
Mon, 18 Jan 2016 18:54:10 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Upton hit just .251 in his only season in San Diego, but posted 26 doubles, 26 homers and 81 RBIs with 19 steals in 150 games. It will be his first time in the American League after three stops with NL teams. He is a solid source of power and steals for fantasy owners in 2016, and his numbers should be similar in another pitcher-friendly home park like Comerica Park.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez had a career year in 2015, batting .282 with 38 home runs and 102 RBIs in 158 games while making the All-Star team for the first time. The 28-year-old should be one of the first outfielders selected in fantasy drafts this spring.
Fri, 15 Jan 2016 16:48:54 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Iglesias missed around the last month of the 2015 season but still posted a solid .300 batting average. Iglesias should not be a big fantasy option this season but could be selected in AL-only leagues.
Thu, 24 Dec 2015 17:38:21 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Cespedes is likely to be one of the first outfielders taken in next year's drafts because of his power and speed, regardless of what uniform he's wearing. However, fantasy owners should take caution to avoid drafting him too high based on his performance with the Mets during the second half of last season.

Free-agent SS Mike Aviles (Indians) agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers Friday, Dec. 18, according to sources. Aviles hit .231 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 98 games with the Cleveland Indians in 2015.
Fantasy Tip: Aviles' real-life value comes as a super-utility player that can play basically everywhere in the infield. He'll strictly be a bench guy for Detroit, most likely. He has limited power and doesn't do anything exceptionally well, so he's only a depth piece in really deep AL-only formats.
Wed, 09 Dec 2015 15:06:33 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Swisher is more of a platoon player at this point in his career, but he has some appeal because of his ability to play both the outfield and first base. His power numbers have declined significantly in the last two years, too, as he's dealt with a plethora of injuries. Swisher is really only of interest in single-universe leagues or on FantasyScore because of a juicy matchup.
