Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Detroit Tigers C James McCann, SS Jose Iglesias and OF Anthony Gose are not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 5. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is doing the catching and hitting seventh, 3B Mike Aviles is at the 6 and is batting eighth, and SS Andrew Romine is in center field and is hitting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer.
Fantasy Tip: Salty got hot with regular playing time when McCann was on the DL, but has only four hits in his last 29 at-bats (.138). He's a low-end catching option if you're looking to save salary cap space. Aviles and Romine are desperation daily picks and should be avoided.

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos, who is slashing .368/.376/.586, has learned to lay off pitches in the lower corner of the strike zone. From 2013 until the All-Star break last year, he had a .132 slugging percentage on those pitches. "Everyone has their kryptonite," manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he's learning, I think, to recognize it and lay off it more or at least get a piece of the wood on it and put the pressure on the defense."
Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is only 24 and is hitting behind proven sluggers like Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera. He couldn't be in a better situation to see his power and discipline mature, and that's what's happening this year. Castellanos is a real threat to reach 20 homers this year while also contributing a handy average for owners.

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez dropped to 3-3 after losing his latest start Wednesday, May 4, against the Cleveland Indians. He registered seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out seven.
Fantasy Tip: It won't go down officially as a quality start, but there's more good here than bad from the 32-year-old veteran. Tonight's outing actually marked a season-high in innings for Sanchez, and he also reached seven strikeouts in a game for the third time in six tries. His ERA may not look very desirable at the moment, but Sanchez is showing signs he can settle in comfortably.

Fantasy Tip: This is now the second time Verlander has given up seven runs in an outing this year in only six starts. While he now owns a 6.49 ERA, he's pitched better than that, as the rest of his outings have gone for quality starts, and he's averaging almost a strikeout per inning. Owners shouldn't give up on the former AL MVP and Cy Young winner just yet.

Fantasy Tip: McCann's return likely returns Salty to more of a backup role, even though he hit six home runs with McCann sidelined. Neither backstop is anything more than a second catcher in two-catcher leagues, and Saltalamacchia's value for 2016 has likely already peaked.

Fantasy Tip: When McCann was on the DL, Jarrod Saltalamacchia took the starting job by force and ran with it, hitting six home runs and driving in 16. Salty is only hitting .233, though, and McCann figures to eventually take over the majority of starts behind the dish. However, McCann is simply a second catcher in two-catcher or AL-only setups.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez currently leads the American League in OPS (1.072) and has 14 runs, five home runs and 18 RBI to start the season. He is well on his way to a huge rebound showing in 2016, and barring an injury, could be one of the biggest values of spring drafts. Start Martinez confidently going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Moving to the American League was expected to hurt Zimmermann's fantasy value, especially after his negative regression in 2015 (3.66 ERA and 3.75 FIP). It hasn't been the case, though, and besides the underwhelming strikeout numbers (6.3 K/9), Zimmermann has been an excellent fantasy option thus far. View him as a solid mid-rotation arm for your fantasy roster going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann's ERA actually rose to 0.55 to close out a brilliant April. He's pitching like an SP1 now and is a daily consideration whenever his turn comes up.

Fantasy Tip: McCann is just 2-for-15 with two RBI through his first four rehab games and may not receive as much playing time after he returns due to the performance of C Jarrod Saltalamacchia in his absence. Owners in all fantasy formats should avoid using McCann until he can demonstrate that he is completely healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Although Iglesias is hitting .284 through his first 67 at-bats this year, he's only worth using in AL-only fantasy leagues because he's not much of a contributor for counting stats.
Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:06:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: After a strong start to the 2016 season, Saltalamacchia has cooled off recently, with just one hit in 13 at-bats over the past week. That being said, his six home runs and 15 RBI are nothing to sneeze at, so he's worth a flier in daily fantasy games.

Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann is enjoying his crossover to the American League. He is a must-start in all fantasy formats and a solid option in DFS play, too.
Fri, 29 Apr 2016 23:54:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: McCann is having a difficult time at the dish in his rehab stint, hitting just .133 overall. Avoid him in all fantasy leagues and DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Detroit Tigers OF Cameron Maybin (wrist) served as the designated hitter Friday, April 29, in a minor-league rehab game with Class AAA Toledo. He finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three walks and four runs scored.
Fantasy Tip: Maybin looked tremendous in this one, and is looking like he is close to a return. Wait to see him officially return and knock off the rust before trusting him in AL-only leagues and DFS play.
