Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for McCann, his backup, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been flourishing while he's been out. In fact, despite a .231 batting average, Salty now has six home runs and 15 RBI. As a result, McCann's stock isn't too high right now, as he does not look like a dependable option in leagues that start one catcher. Owners should wait to see how much playing time he gets once he returns.

Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez tweaked his delivery for the second time this season in his outing Thursday, April 28, opposite the Oakland Athletics. He brought back the rotation that sees him turn his back on the batter.
Fantasy Tip: While he now has three wins on the year after defeating the A's, Sanchez is doing it in ugly fashion, as he currently holds a 6.08 ERA. And after yielding 10 baserunners, including a disastrous seven walks, on Thursday, Sanchez now has a 1.86 WHIP through his first five starts. He's a risky player to start in most leagues, and at this point, owners should only be deploying him if he has an advantageous matchup.

Fantasy Tip: Kinsler has now registered a hit in 18 of 20 games this season and sits with a .345/.376/.529 slash line. He has also padded the counting stats by collecting 20 runs, four home runs, 13 RBI and a stolen base. At 33, Kinsler doesn't offer the power-speed combo he did in his prime, but his strong start has him among the best fantasy options at the keystone.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeouts are encouraging, but they're somewhat mitigated by the damage the free passes do to the WHIP column. Sanchez sits with a 6.08 ERA, a 1.86 WHIP and 26 strikeouts through 23 2/3 innings over his first five starts of the season. He is difficult to trust at this stage, but if the veteran can fine-tune his control, there is upside. In deep mixed leagues, Sanchez is worth a roster spot if you're selective with his starts.

Detroit Tigers SP Shane Greene (finger) will miss at least two starts, so he will be placed on the disabled list with a blister on his middle finger Thursday, April 28, retroactive to Monday, April 25, according to manager Brad Ausmus. SP Michael Fulmer, the team's top pitching prospect, will come up to start Friday, April 29, against the Minnesota Twins. There is no guarantee that Fulmer will make both of the starts filling in for Greene, though.
Fantasy Tip: Fulmer deserves attention in AL-only and keeper leagues, but because his stay could be short in the majors this time around, keep your bids conservative if you're speculating or planning to use him in a spot start against the Twins in deep mixed affairs. You can likely drop Greene in deep mixed leagues in favor of healthier options.

Detroit Tigers SP Michael Fulmer will be recalled from Class AAA Toledo presumably to make his major league debut Friday, April 29, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Fulmer is the club's top prospect and is recognized as one of the best young arms in baseball. "He's got stuff for sure," Ausmus said. "He throws 95, he's got a wipeout slider, but the big leagues is a little different. Guys have seen stuff like that before. You do have to locate your pitches but it certainly doesn't hurt to have that type of stuff in your arsenal."
Fantasy Tip: Fulmer will likely be taking the spot of Shane Greene (finger), who's headed to the DL with a blister issue. Fulmer had a career year in 2015, going 10-3 with a 2.24 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings in the minors. His high strikeout upside makes him an immediate waiver wire pickup in dynasty and AL-only leagues, and he's worth a flier in deep mixed leagues, as well.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez homered with four RBI in the two-hole yesterday, and he's a high-end outfielder against Chris Bassitt.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander allowed three earned runs, five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a win Wednesday, April 27, against the Oakland Athletics to even his record at 2-2.
Fantasy Tip: Verlander has four quality starts in five outings, so his 5.46 ERA is a bit misleading. He really has had just one stinker this season, and he has at least six strikeouts in each of his past three outings.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez snapped an eight-game slide without an extra-base hit in style. He entered the game with just six RBIs, but this is why you don't reserve him in AL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been a huge disappointment to this point, posting just one homer and four RBIs with a .221 on-base percentage. He has 35 strikeouts in 82 at-bats to crush fantasy owners even further in leagues which penalize the category.

Fantasy Tip: Once healthy, McCann should again take over the lion's share of starts for the Tigers. He is still nothing more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats. Stay tuned for updates on his recovery.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson isn't much of a hitter, as he hit just .189 with one home run in 2015. You can find much better low-price catchers in daily formats Wednesday night.

Detroit Tigers OFs J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton were flopped in the batting order against Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray Wednesday, April 27. Martinez is now hitting second in front of 1B Miguel Cabrera, while Upton is dropped to fifth.
Fantasy Tip: Both Upton (.208/.235/.299 with one HR) and Martinez (.278/.346/.403 with two HR) are undererforming in the early going, so Brad Ausmus is looking for a way to get Detroit's offense going. You're probably not sitting either hitter in traditional fantasy formats, but you shouldn't be spending up on either of them in daily contests, at least until they start to break out of their early funks.
Wed, 27 Apr 2016 12:33:16 -0700
Fantasy Tip: To start the season, Rodriguez has allowed five runs through 6 1/3 innings, including two home runs. However, his role as the Detroit closer is secure, and Rodriguez has notched four saves already. Return him to your seasonal lineups and continue to view the veteran as a middling option for saves.
Wed, 27 Apr 2016 11:10:03 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Upton is batting just .208/.235/.299 with one home run and four RBI in 77 at-bats with his new team. He has been known to go on hot and cold stretches in his career, though, so things could easily turn around once the calendar flips to May. However, his cold start could get him booted down the batting order if it continues. Sit tight with Upton for now, and if his owner is antsy in your league, see if you can't swing a deal to buy low.
