Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries
Fri, 31 Jul 2015 18:04:01 -0700
Detroit Tigers OFs Tyler Collins, Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose are expected to share time in left field and center field for the remainder of the season, with OF J.D. Martinez serving as the full-time right fielder.
Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has played all three outfield positions in 2015, while Gose ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has exclusively played center field and Collins has manned the two corner outfield positions. Expect to see Gose and Collins in the lineup versus righties, with Davis getting playing time against lefties.

Fantasy Tip: Cespedes ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) was hitting .293 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in 102 games for the Tigers before winding up in the National League for the first time in his career. His stats may take a slight tumble because Citi Field is not as hitter-friendly as Comerica Park.

Fantasy Tip: Cespedes' departure opens up an outfield spot in Detroit, and Rajai Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) and Anthony Gose ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) should benefit from more consistent playing time instead of being stuck in a platoon. Davis and Gose will receive a boost in value in traditional leagues, but at FantasyScore, they're both still midrange value plays for their speed. With Cespedes gone, using pitchers against Detroit is now much more palatable.

Fantasy Tip: The New York Mets have been pushing hard to land Cespedes after losing out on Carlos Gomez the other day. Cespedes' ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) is unlikely to lose a ton of fantasy value if he goes to the Mets or another National League club, but he will be leaving a nice hitter's park in Detroit.

Detroit Tigers OF Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-8 win over the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, July 30, and he has four home runs in his last six games.
Fantasy Tip: Cespedes ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has three homers in his last four games and has six RBI and three multi-hit games during the stretch. He makes a strong play at FantasyScore right now, especially against right-handed pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has a 8.25 ERA through just 12.0 innings this season, but he does have a strikeout rate of 13.50. He's a risky option, but if he is named the closer, Rondon will be worth picking up in 12-team leagues.

The Detroit Tigers acquired SS JaCoby Jones from the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, July 30, in exchange for RP Joakim Soria. The Tigers view Jones as an everyday player at the major-league level, but he will start off playing shortstop for Class AA Erie.
Fantasy Tip: Jones has played the bulk of his season at high-A Bradenton for the Pirates, and he hit .253 with 10 home runs and 14 stolen bases through 423 plate appearances. He could be someone to follow next spring training.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 15:33:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: RPs Bruce Rondon and Al Alburquerque are the players listed immediately below Soria on the Tigers' depth chart, while Neftali Feliz may also receive a shot. Rondon has the most upside, but Alburqueque and Feliz are the ones with previous closing experience. The Tigers haven't said who will take over the closer's job and a committee approach may be most likely.

Fantasy Tip: Norris made five starts for the Toronto Blue Jays this season and returned a 3.86 ERA, but he proved he wasn't ready for the big leagues with a 5.00 FIP and a 1.50 WHIP. He is worth considering for a speculative add in deep mixed leagues, but he stands as a risky start Sunday, especially for FantasyScore owners.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:11:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Both Gose and Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) have fizzled out at the plate lately, and Davis has only six hits in 43 at-bats (.140) in July with no homers or RBI. He typically is only attractive to daily gamers when he's facing left-handers, too, so he should be considered a weak option on FantasyScore tonight, especially while hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is rather expensive for a backup catcher, but he is batting .280 (63-for-225) with four home runs and 24 RBI on the season. He remains more of a low-end catching commodity for daily gamers, though.

Fantasy Tip: With Price gone, Norris is the likely candidate to enter the Tigers' rotation. Norris, a left-hander, has intriguing stuff and went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in five starts (23 1/3 innings) for the Blue Jays earlier this year. He should be immediately added in at least AL-only leagues to get the jump on your league mates if he indeed enters the Detroit rotation.

Fantasy Tip: If you're a Soria owner, it might be a good time to start looking for alternative save routes, since he might not end up in a closing role if he's dealt. Neftali Feliz may be Detroit's next best option for ninth-inning duties if Soria leaves town. Stash him now if you're desperate for saves in any league.

Fantasy Tip: Simon ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) has been very inconsistent this year with a 4.46 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 19 starts, and he's allowed at least four earned runs in six of his last seven starts. Coming off an abbreviated outing due to injury, he's a very poor choice as one of your FantasyScore pitchers tomorrow.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), Simon ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) and Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has been regulars for the Tigers this season but could be moved for the right offer. Their fantasy value will be determined by which team they play for and the role on the team.
