Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) and DH Victor Martinez (knee) both hit home runs in the spring game Thursday, March 26. Cabrera's home run was a line drive that looked like his swings from two or three years ago. He also nearly homered on a sacrifice fly to right field in the game. Cabrera will take the day off Friday, March 27, before playing in three straight games.
Fantasy Tip: It's great news to see both Miggy and V-Mart go deep in the same game after they were both behind in spring training due to injuries. Cabrera's old line drive stroke is a welcome sight for those that selected him later in the first round of fantasy drafts. If Cabrera stays healthy, he should continue to produce like a first-rounder.

Fantasy Tip: That's not exactly what you want to hear from a player coming off recent knee surgery. This could be something to monitor for V-Mart all season long. Martinez has been a consistent contributor across the board for fantasy owners in his career, and the new risk-reward profile for him could make him a value pick in drafts if he can stay healthy all year.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan's nail issue shouldn't keep him from being ready on opening day. Ausmus also suggested that Nathan doesn't have competition in the closer's role, at least not yet. Nathan still remains on shaky ground in the eyes of fantasy owners as a late-round closing source. If you can, try to handcuff Joakim Soria to the veteran pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: At age 40, Nathan is losing steam and velocity as the Tigers' closer. Many owners are skeptical of owning him for fear of injury or demotion early in the year. You can't argue with the job security Detroit is giving him to start, though, which makes him worth a late-round pick. Handcuffing him with Joakim Soria would be the ideal situation.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) played first base for the first time this spring Wednesday, March 25. He made a diving stop on a hard grounder in the game and went 0-for-2 at the plate. "I'm just glad to back on the field playing first base," Cabrera said. "I can play defense and I want to be back at first. I'm seeing the ball, getting my timing down. It's a good sign."
Fantasy Tip: Cabrera ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) should be good to go for opening day, and it's a great sign that he looked good on defense today. Despite injury and aging concerns, Miggy remains a first-round pick (later in the round) in 2015 fantasy baseball drafts. You may want to shy away from him in the first week of the season at FantasyScore, though, as he gets his timing down from missing time this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Price will start on opening day against the Minnesota Twins. Even at a high FantasyScore salary ($8,100, 16.2% of cap), the matchup against the Twins is favorable and one you should look to take advantage of.

Fantasy Tip: It would be Cabrera's first action in the field this spring, and it's a great sign he is on track to be ready for the season opener. Miggy ($6,300, 12.6% of your cap) is a top player to consider on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Unless Martinez ends up behind the plate, which isn't happening, whether he plays in the field or not is irrelevant for 2015. He is a solid fantasy contributor and worth a selection in the early middle rounds, but make sure not to pay for last year's career-best production. Also, continue to check back for updates on his progress through the rest of the spring.

Detroit Tigers OF Anthony Gose hit a double in the spring game Sunday, March 22, and he's batting .341 and leads the Grapefruit League in triples with three and is among the leaders in batting average and slugging percentage.
Fantasy Tip: Gose's hot spring has likely at least earned him a partial time share in center field with Rajai Davis to start the 2015 season. Gose also hits left-handed, so that could become a straight platoon. Gose, 24, is a late-round option in deeper mixed leagues for his speed contributions. He'll be much more valuable in AL-only formats.

Fantasy Tip: With Joe Nathan's age and velocity concerns well documented, Soria is a popular late-round closer pick as a handcuff to Detroit's encumbent closer. The leash for Nathan might be short, so Soria has a decent chance to take over the ninth-inning duties at some point in 2015 whether it be because of poor performance or injury.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) will serve as the designated hitter in the spring game Tuesday, March 24, and he might be ready to move to first base during games. Cabrera made his Grapefruit League debut Sunday, March 22, and went 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts. Manager Brad Ausmus said the chances are better than 50% that Cabrera will be ready for opening day.
Fantasy Tip: While Cabrera may be limited to start the 2015 season, the good news is that he hasn't suffered any setbacks so far this spring. Despite the fact that he's an aging slugger who now has injury concerns, he should be considered in the late part of the first round of fantasy baseball drafts.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) is in the starting lineup for the split squad game against the Washington Nationals Sunday, March 22. Cabrera is serving as the designated hitter in the game.
Fantasy Tip: Cabrera could be limited to the role of designated hitter in the first few games but should see time at first base at some point during the start of the regular season. Cabrera should be an option in the first round of most drafts if he is ready for the season.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart ($5,400; 10.8% of your cap) still has some ground to make up, but his status for Opening Day looks promising. He's an upper-echelon first baseman on FantasyScore.
Sat, 21 Mar 2015 07:21:40 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is working his way back from his knee injury but probably will only need a few spring training games to prepare for the regular season. Martinez likely will be selected in one of the earlier rounds of most mixed drafts.
Sat, 21 Mar 2015 07:13:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cabrera looks to be on track for the start of the regular season, but owners should continue to monitor the situation. Cabrera likely will be selected in the first round of most drafts this season.
