Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan was worth a speculative flyer because of how bad the Tigers bullpen has been and how good he was in the past. This news obviously makes that a moot point.

Fantasy Tip: This is not a health-related bit of news for Avila, whose fantasy value is still weaker due to recent concussion issues. He has a new mask this season which should help matters, but right now Avila is worth only a mid-round pick at best.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos should be all right as spring training goes on, and he should be drafted in later rounds of most AL and mixed leagues depending on the amount of playing time he gets.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) appears to be on track to be ready for opening day. He took 50 total swings off a tee Monday, March 2, and he picked up the intensity while running on an anti-gravity treadmill. Martinez hasn't suffered from any additional swelling in his knee, and he hopes to return to game action and receive a decent amount of at-bats this spring. "You know what, in my whole career, I always take from 50 to 70," Martinez said, "but I'm the kind of guy I need a lot of repetitions to get going. We'll see. I think maybe two weeks playing maybe every day, it'll get me to that point."
Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are unlikely to rush V-Mart this spring, so there's still a realistic chance that he won't be ready when the regular season begins. There's also the reality that he may get off to a slow start in April if he isn't in top game shape. Consider these things while drafting Martinez, but he still remains a fine first base selection aside from his age and injury concerns.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) played in a game for the first time this year Monday, March 2, and he said he felt great. He had just one at-bat in an inning in the exhibition game after missing all of last year with stress fractures in both of his legs. Iglesias said he hasn't had any soreness in his legs this spring.
Fantasy Tip: Iglesias offers very little with his bat for fantasy baseball owners. He's a defensive-first player for the Tigers, and he should only be looked at in deep AL-only formats.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera remains an elite MLB hitter despite some injury concerns as he ages. He might not even end up missing time at all, so unless he suffers some sort of setback in camp, expect him to come off the board in the middle to end of the first round of fantasy baseball drafts.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart could be ready by opening day, depending on how his knee responds to workouts this spring. He dodged a bullet with his knee injury, and he should remain a fine first base target in the middle rounds of standard 12-team leagues. Be prepared for a slow start to the season, though, as he gets his legs underneath him.

Fantasy Tip: The window on a World Series may be closing soon, but Cespedes is correct for the most part. Depending on how Comerica Park's dimensions affect his bat Cespedes' value could increase a bit, but he is still a solid pick in most AL and mixed leagues. Also keep in mind he played several years in Oakland, long considered a pitcher's park.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera still has several weeks to prepare for the regular season, so owners should monitor his progress during spring training. He should be an option in the first round of fantasy drafts if he does not suffer any setbacks.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will report to spring training Monday, March 2, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Ausmus said Martinez may be able to swing a bat when he reports and could hit some soft toss.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is working his way back from knee surgery, and it looks like he may be ready for the start of the season. Owners should monitor his progress during spring training to see if he suffers any setbacks. Martinez should be a solid option for owners in mixed leagues, but they should lower their expectations since he could struggle early in the season if he does not receive many at bats this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Avila doesn't stand out in any one category, and his nagging injuries are unattractive. As the starter in Detroit, he mainly helps as a second catcher that's guaranteed consistent playing time when he's healthy in two-catcher formats.

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan lowered him arm slot in the second half of last season. He dropped his ERA from 6.37 in April, May and June to 3.18 in July, August and September. Nathan has worked on the lower arm-slot delivery all winter, and he says,"it's allowed me to come into camp more comfortable in that slot." In addition to being comfortable with his delivery, Nathan reports his offseason work with a personal trainer has "changed my body composition a lot." Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he's convinced Nathan's troubles last year were "more of an aberration and less about the aging process."
Fantasy Tip: Nathan's leash will be shorter as the Tigers closer with the presence of former Royals and Rangers closer Joakim Soria in the bullpen. That said, Nathan's role as the closer keeps him in the lower-tier among saves options entering this season. Gamers that draft Nathan would be wise to keep an eye on his spring results with his lower arm slot and new diet, and selecting Soria as a handcuff might be worthwhile as well.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (abdomen) underwent surgery on both sides of his groin and abdomen prior to last season, and he told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark he's loosening up quicker this year than last. "The other day," Verlander stated, "I threw like 50 pitches in the bullpen, and sat down and cooled off. And after 15 minutes, it felt like I could throw again, and I could get loose pretty quick, whereas last year, I mean, every inning was a grind, trying to just get my arm working again. You know, it would take me 10 pitches into the inning to feel like I was loose. Which isn't fun." Verlander's body healed properly from the procedure last year, but he was too stiff to rotate his core and hips.
Fantasy Tip: Verlander had a down year in 2014 after delivering ace production for most of his career. His added weight, 28 pounds according to Verlander, has been a subject of discussion lately. His weight gain, coupled with news he's feeling healthier this offseason, will likely provide drafters optimism to gamble on in the middle rounds for a rebound.

Free-agent RP Joba Chamberlain (Tigers) has re-signed with the Detroit Tigers on a one-year contract. He will receive a $1 million base salary plus a $100,000 incentive for reaching 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 plate appearances. RP Chad Smith was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.
Fantasy Tip: Chamberlain carries middling fantasy value under his current situation unless Joe Nathan and Joakim Soria both go down with injuries and are ineffective once again. Still, keep an eye on Chamberlain for deeper league formats.

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) arrived at training camp Monday, Feb. 23, and said he felt no pain and there were no issues with his right foot. He will begin running on an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill sometime this week, and he wants to be ready for opening day.
Fantasy Tip: It is unlikely Cabrera misses enough time to significantly hinder his year-end numbers, and he might not miss time at all. He is still an elite hitter, and he should be considered a first-round pick in fantasy drafts. Keep checking back for updates on his progress leading into the season, but it currently appears he'll miss minimal time, if any.
