Tigers | Many of old stadium's materials being recycled

The Associated Press reports that more than 94 percent of the demolished portion of Tiger Stadium is being recycled, including more than 11.4 million pounds of steel and nearly 17 million pounds of concrete and other debris. The city of Detroit, which owned the stadium, did not have to pay for demolition. Instead, Detroit-based Farrow Group Inc. and Bloomfield Hills-based MCM Management Corp. looked to turn a profit off of the ballpark by selling it as scrap. While they won't say how much money they've made, initial projections put the value of the stadium's materials around $1 million.

Jason Beck, of MLB.com, reports Detroit Tigers SP Freddy Garcia (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a side session Friday, Oct. 10. If the side session is a success, Garcia will return to Venezuela and could begin pitching in a winter league by the end of next week, according to his agent, Peter Greenburg. Garcia left the team's season finale with tightness in his pitching shoulder, but the injury was diagnosed as muscular tightness running from his next to his right shoulder, according to Greensburg. A follow-up exam by Dr. Joe Fernandez confirmed no structural damage in the shoulder. The plan is for Garcia to pitch two months in Venezuela, eventually stretching his pitch count to prove his arm can handle the workload.

The Associated Press reports the Detroit City Council has granted Tiger Stadium a stay of execution. The council voted 5-3 Tuesday, Oct. 7, to reject a resolution that would have given permission to demolish the stadium. Crews started tearing the stadium down in June, but a corner of the stadium has been preserved while a preservation group tries to raise money to turn it into a sports museum.
