Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuriesSat, 18 May 2013 14:33:55 -0700 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) is feeling better and expects Jackson to come off the 15-day disabled list when he is eligible. Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Jackson will only miss one more week because of his hamstring injury. Owners should add him back to their starting lineups once he returns. Share: Tigers | Al Alburquerque sent down Thu, 16 May 2013 07:32:12 -0700 The Detroit Tigers optioned RP Al Alburquerque to Triple-A Toledo and recalled RP Evan Reed. Fantasy Tip: Alburquerque has struck out 26 in 14 1/3 innings this year, but he's issued 13 walks and has thrown six wild pitches. He'll go down to try and harness his control. Share: Tigers | Torii Hunter changes approach Tue, 14 May 2013 17:01:28 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Torii Hunter changed his hitting approach to become more of a line-drive hitter than a big bopper at the tail end of last season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and this year with the Tigers. Hunter is also using the entire field more than he has before, looking to drive outside pitches to the opposite field instead of trying to pull them. Hunter has a .360 batting average and .551 average on balls in play since the All-Star break last season. Fantasy Tip: This is the kind of rennaissance that soon-to-be 38-year-olds need to do to in order to avoid natural regression in their skills. Hunter has successfully changed his approach and surprised most fantasy owners with his hot start. The question is whether he can sustain these levels of success all season. The answer is probably not, but he could remain pretty darn effective if he sticks with his new approach all year. Share: Tigers | Have other CF options Mon, 13 May 2013 10:45:23 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks has some experience in center field and OF Avisail Garcia can also play center, having started 44 games there last summer with Double-A Eerie. OF Torii Hunter has plenty of experience in the position, too, so the Tigers have plenty of options to play center field with OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list. OF Don Kelly started the last two games in center field over the weekend. Garcia's natural role is as a corner outfielder, though, and he hit .432 (16-for-37) with a double, a home run and four RBIs in eight games with Triple-A Toledo. Fantasy Tip: Kelly was likely a temporary solution to the problem over the weekend. Now that Jackson is out for two weeks, expect either Dirks or Hunter to man center field regularly, allowing Garcia to play a corner outfield spot. Garcia may not play every day, however, but for those speculating on increased playing time in cavernous mixed leagues, Garcia is your best bet over Kelly or Matt Tuiasosopo. Share: Tigers | Austin Jackson to DLMon, 13 May 2013 09:58:29 -0700 The Detroit Tigers placed OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring pull Monday, May 13, and recalled OF Avisail Garcia from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Jackson's DL stint will be retroactive to May 12. Fantasy Tip: Don Kelly started in center field yesterday with Jackson out, but he might have just been a one-game replacement. Although he doesn't have the range he once had, Torii Hunter could slide over to center, which would allow the Tigers to place Garcia in right field. Garcia's season is off to a slow start thanks to a heel injury, but he represents the most upside out of the group that includes Kelly and Matt Tuiasosopo. Andy Dirks should continue to see consistent playing time in left. The outfield arrangement could be very fluid, though, so deep mixed leaguers speculating on increased playing time might have to be patient. Share: Tigers | Phil Coke activated from disabled list Sun, 12 May 2013 09:57:25 -0700 The Detroit Tigers have activated RP Phil Coke (groin) from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, RP Luke Putkonen has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Share: Tigers | Octavio Dotel gets second opinion Sat, 11 May 2013 18:06:37 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Octavio Dotel (elbow) received a second opinion on his elbow injury from Dr. James Andrews, who agreed with the original diagnosis. There is no structural damage in Dotel's elbow, and he does not need surgery. Dotel is still having issues with his elbow and will not try to throw again for six days. Share: Tigers | Miguel Cabrera has back pain Thu, 09 May 2013 11:10:18 -0700 Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera (back) said he was experiencing back discomfort Wednesday, May 8, but he stayed in the game and received treatment. Cabrera is in the lineup Thursday, May 9. Fantasy Tip: This is the last thing fantasy owners want to hear about Miggy, but the issue looks to be very minor. It's worth watching, though, if it crops up again soon. Share: Tigers | Splitter key to Jose Valverde's success Thu, 09 May 2013 11:03:24 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde's fastball has been key to his success this season as he returns to the closer's role in Detroit. "That's most important for him," MLB analyst Orel Hershiser said. "To just be able to throw that fastball low and away for a strike." Of Valverde's 57 pitches he's thrown in four outings so far, he's thrown only six split-finger fastballs. He threw 18.7 percent splitters last season, which was down from 20.5 percent in 2011. Manager Jim Leyland noted that Valverde's split got away from him late last season when he was struggling, but he thinks he can regain control of the pitch. MLive.com's James Schmehl suggests Valverde might not be throwing the splitter that much right now because he's still trying to gain control of it and because the weather has been cold. Share: Tigers | Phil Coke throws from mound Sun, 05 May 2013 21:17:01 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Phil Coke (groin) threw a bullpen session Saturday, May 4, and a brief bullpen session Sunday, May 5. Barring any setbacks, he will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Monday, May 6. Coke is eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 11. Share: Tigers | Octavio Dotel not ready for rehab assignment Sun, 05 May 2013 21:16:10 -0700 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday, May 5, that RP Octavio Dotel (elbow) is not yet ready to head out for a minor-league rehab assignment, and his return date is unclear at this point. Share: Tigers | Avisail Garcia injured in minors Sun, 05 May 2013 20:47:49 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Avisail Garcia (finger) is nursing a finger injury at Triple-A Toledo, and he did not play over the weekend. However, he is nearing a return, as his injury is not considered serious. Share: Tigers | Victor Martinez to be used as pinch hitter Sun, 05 May 2013 10:37:04 -0700 Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez will not be in the starting lineup during the team's interleague series against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, May 8. Manager Jim Leyland said Martinez is not ready for catching duties at this point and will be used as a pinch hitter. Share: Tigers | Alex Avila not in lineup Sunday Sun, 05 May 2013 10:30:34 -0700 Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (illness) is not in the starting lineup against the Houston Astros Sunday, May 5, because of an illness. C Brayan Pena is starting behind the plate. Share: Tigers | Miguel Cabrera continues hot hitting Saturday Sun, 05 May 2013 10:00:32 -0700 Entering play Sunday, May 5, Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera had 10 hits in his last 20 at-bats. He went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and tied a career high with six RBIs Saturday, May 4, against the Houston Astros. Share: ![]() |
