Colorado Rockies news, rumors and injuries

Colorado Rockies C Nick Hundley (oblique) hit in the batting cages for the first time Wednesday, May 25. He will take regular batting practice for the next two days and then be re-examined when the Rockies go back home Friday, May 27. Hundley could go on a rehab assignment next week.
Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries are tricky, so Hundley won't be rushed back by Colorado. Hundley has found a home in Colorado, though, and he'll be a serviceable low-end catcher in mixed leagues when he returns if you're looking for help. Dustin Garneau and Tony Wolters have been splitting duties behind the plate in the meantime, but neither backstop is very attractive outside of two-catcher and deep NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: It was only a matter of time for De La Rosa, who was sporting a horrendous 11.41 ERA and 2.28 WHIP in six starts for the Rockies this year after getting blasted by the Red Sox in his first start off the DL last night. He shouldn't be owned anywhere. Rusin has a 3.93 ERA in four starts for Colorado this year. He should only be an option for the desperate in NL-only leagues with a career 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Fantasy Tip: Motte has potential to work his way into some save situations down the line, but for now, he is nothing more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. And while Jake McGee is a prime trade candidate, there is no guarantee Motte emerges as his successor.

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa (groin) started his first game in almost a month after being activated from the disabled list and struggled Tuesday, May 24, against the Boston Red Sox. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out only one.
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa has been the definition of abysmal in 2016, as he's made it beyond the fourth inning only once this season in six starts. At this point, he should only be taking up a roster spot in deep NL-only leagues in case he's able to get into a rhythm but right now, the thought of starting him while he's struggling like this just seems laughable.

Colorado Rockies OF Ryan Raburn is in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, against the Boston Red Sox as a designated hitter. Raburn will hit sixth against Red Sox SP David Price. His on-base plus slugging number is 1.061 against left-handed pitching.
Fantasy Tip: Raburn is hitting .300-5-12 overall, and his other stats rise against left-handed pitching. He should be given strong fantasy consideration against Price Tuesday night for that reason.

Fantasy Tip: Wolters is out mainly due to the left vs. left matchup, although Wolters and Garneau are in a platoon situation and neither one catches a majority of games. Garneau doesn't have much fantasy value, so you should look elsewhere for a catcher.

Colorado Rockies SP Jeff Hoffman could be promoted to the major leagues soon. He has a 2.70 ERA in his first nine starts in the Pacific Coast League. Hoffman was the centerpiece of the trade that sent SS Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Fantasy Tip: Hoffman also has 49 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. He's recovered from Tommy John surgery in 2014 and has a dominant high-90s heater and mixed in good offspeed pitches, including a wipeout hard curveball as an out pitch. As with most youngsters, his command is spotty, but he has top-of-the-rotation stuff. Keep tabs on him in keeper/dynasty formats.

Fantasy Tip: Blackmon got out to a woeful start this year, but he's picked it up considerably since then to lift his batting average up over .300. He's been especially efficient as of late, hitting .364 over his last five ballgames. As long as he remains the leadoff man in Colorado's dangerous batting order, he's someone that should always be on starting rosters in fantasy.

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles had a rough afternoon Monday, May 23, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as he went just 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks. He also struck out three.
Fantasy Tip: In his first start at the big league level in about a month, Lyles didn't provide much reason for the club to bring him back into the rotation on a permanent basis. In four of his five starts now, the former Houston Astro has yielded at least five runs, making him someone to avoid at this point in time whenever he picks up a spot start.

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez entered the game Monday, May 23, in a 2-for-32 slump in the last 10 games while batting .183 with a home run and one RBI in May. Manager Walt Weiss plans to keep Gonzalez in the middle of the order to let him work through his struggles. "I've had him fifth at times and he's bounced between third, fourth and fifth," Weiss said. "And last year when he was struggling, I hit him sixth at times. But it can turn around quickly with him, and he's still dangerous to the opposing pitcher and opposing team."
Fantasy Tip: Car-Go appears to be fully healthy, so this slump should pass. Avoid him in daily formats until he shows signs of life at the dish but continue using him in seasonal leagues.

The game between the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, May 22, was postponed due to rain after one inning. The game has been rescheduled for Monday, May 23. Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio and Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis were the pitchers. There was no word on their status for Monday.
Fantasy Tip: Because the game already started any players are stuck in your lineup. As far as the stats, they do not count because the game did not go an official five innings.

Colorado Rockies SS Trevor Story and 1B Mark Reynolds are not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio Sunday, May 22. INF Cristhian Adames will play shortstop and bat second, while INF Daniel Descalso will bat seventh and play first base. In addition, OF Carlos Gonzalez is back in the lineup, batting cleanup and playing right field.
Fantasy Tip: Adames is batting .300 (6-for-20) over the past month after beginning the season with just one hit in his first 18-bats, while Descalso is 3-for-6 with two RBI this year. Use them in daily fantasy lineups only if you're desperate for salary cap relief.

Fantasy Tip: Chatwood has been a surprise fantasy contributor this year, and don't hesitate to start him in daily formats when he is pitching on the road.
Sat, 21 May 2016 12:47:26 -0700
Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez is not in the lineup on Saturday, May 21, against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese. Gonzalez has played in 40 of the Rockies' first 41 games, starting in 39. 1B Mark Reynolds will bat fourth, OF Gerardo Parra will slide over from left to right field and hit sixth, while OF Ryan Raburn will replace Parra in left and bat fifth.
Fantasy Tip: It's been a rough stretch at the plate to say the least for CarGo, who is batting .186 with a solo homer - which also accounts for his only RBI - this month and hitless over his last four games to boot. Raburn is always a savvy DFS play against left-handers, while Reynolds is sporting a .328 average despite striking out at his usual heavy rate. Both Raburn and Reynolds are sensible low-cost daily options today given how inconsistent Niese has been this season.

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa (groin) will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, May 24, and he will start that evening's game against the Boston Red Sox. He will be followed in the rotation by SP Jon Gray Wednesday, May 25, and SP Eddie Butler Thursday, May 26.
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa went 1-3 with a 10.18 ERA in five starts before landing on the disabled list and posted a 4.30 ERA in three rehab outings for Class AAA Albuquerque. Although he is striking out batters at a much higher rate than normal, that's the only good thing that can be said about his performance this year. He should be avoided outside of deep NL-only fantasy leagues.
