Rockies | Charlie Blackmon has abdominal pain

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 10:54:05 -0800

Colorado Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon (abdomen) is not in the spring lineup Wednesday, March 4, due to slight abdominal pain. However, he's scheduled to take batting practice.

Fantasy Tip: Blackmon had a solid year with the Rockies in 2014, but can he repeat his efforts in 2015? Be careful not to overvalue him in fantasy baseball drafts. Blackmon had drastic road splits away from the hitter's haven of Coors Field, and his second half numbers may be more indicative of what he has to offer this season.

Rockies | John Axford selected by COL

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 04:57:42 -0800

Colorado Rockies SP John Axford had his contract selected by the team Sunday, March 1. The move puts Axford on the 40-man roster. To make room for Axford, SP Tyler Chatwood (elbow) went to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: In all essence Axford has made the team and will pick up a $2.6 million salary. Axford could be a sleeper candidate in Colorado, but he should still go lower in most NL and mixed drafts given his shaky history and the fact he's pitching in Denver.

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez to run next week

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 15:58:22 -0800

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (knee) will begin running the bases next week.

Fantasy Tip: Car-Go is still a top outfield option in fantasy, but he's no longer worth a first-round pick. See if you can snag the 29-year-old at an injury discount in the first few rounds.

Rockies | Troy Tulowitzki to run the bases

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 15:57:51 -0800

Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will begin running the bases next week. Tulowitzki is progressing and even dove for a groundball in the infield Saturday, Feb. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo is one of the best players in baseball when healthy. However, health wasn't a consistent thing in his 20's. Now at 30, he's a very risky first-round pick in universal leagues.

Rockies | COL will not carry three catchers on roster

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 04:43:58 -0800

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss told media there will not be three catchers on his 25-man roster in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: The Rockies have already experimented with Wilin Rosario at first base and in the outfield, so it is possible Rosario could be odd man out and move to another position. Rosario's fantasy value increases a bit if he lands the No. 2 catching job, as he would likely be used against left-handed pitching (30 homers in 357 at-bats).

Rockies | Corey Dickerson needs some plate discipline

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 17:24:31 -0800

Colorado Rockies OF Corey Dickerson has been able to do plenty of damage to pitches outside the strike zone so far in his career, and he hit .312 with a .364 on-base percentage and a team-leading 24 home runs and 76 RBI in 131 games last year. He also had dramatic home and road splits in 2014, hitting .363 at home and just .252 on the road. Manager Walt Weiss has discussed preaching more plate discipline, but the Rockies also don't want to completely take away his aggressiveness, which has made him successful.

Fantasy Tip: Dickerson's 25-homer power is for real, especially while playing at Coors Field. That alone makes him worthy of an early-rounds pick. However, his aggressiveness could mean that you won't be able to count on a repeat of a batting average over .300, and that's particularly concerning since he doesn't steal much, either.

Rockies | Velocity returns for Jonathan Gray

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 16:25:40 -0800

Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray learned methods for staying strong throughout a professional schedule last season, and he feels like the sky is the limit entering the 2015 season. Gray's fastball lost velocity during his first full professional season, but he designed a strengthening and maintenance plan with his trainers and strength coaches from The University of Oklahoma that corrected the issues.

Fantasy Tip: Gray will compete for a spot in the rotation, but it is more likely he begins the season in Class AAA. With just 33 starts in the minors, a little more seasoning would serve Gray well. He enters the mixed league discussion, if he has a strong spring and earns a rotation spot. Otherwise, Gray is solid prospect worth monitoring for a potential recall.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins to retire after season

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 10:08:33 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins said he will retire after the 2015 season. He is 42 years old entering his 21st season in the major leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins is a cheap saves gamble in the later rounds of your drafts. His skills are shaky on the wrong side of 40, and his K/9 dropped almost two full strikeouts last year to just 5.3. He has value because he'll start the year as the closer, and he could hold down the job early in the year. Rex Brothers is the team's closer of the future, and he's a sleeper/handcuff option as a flier.

Rockies | Troy Tulowitzki healthy

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 14:06:45 -0800

Colorado Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki (hip), who said he was affected by his name being thrown around in trade rumors this winter, has reported to spring training and has declared himself healthy. He is hitting and fielding but has yet to run the bases. There is no rush to get him on the field this spring, and the team is expected to be cautious with him. "I've gone to lengths and lengths to try to figure this thing out," Tulowitzki said of the various injuries that have robbed him of consistency. "I'm not going to quit. I'm not going to quit trying until I find that right recipe."

Fantasy Tip: Despite all of Tulo's injuries over the years, he remains one of the most intriguing players at a weak shortstop position. When he's fully healthy, he arguably gives you the best fantasy edge at the position. Because of that, he's ranked as our No. 2 SS, just ahead of Ian Desmond. Position scarcity may outweight the injury risk that follows Tulo's name these days.

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez fully healthy

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 16:37:35 -0800

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (knee) crushed two home runs during batting practice in spring training Friday, Feb. 20, and he maintains that he's healthy after having left knee surgery last August. Gonzalez hit only .238 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 70 games last year. "I can put all my weight back, sit and wait for the ball -- something that I wasn't able to do last year," said Gonzalez. "It's my back knee, and it's really important to stay back. I have a leg kick, and last year I had a difficult time staying back on pitches." However, Gonzalez may not take part in many spring game, as the main focus is being ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: If not for the injuries, Car-Go would surely be a first-round fantasy baseball selection. There's plenty to like when Gonzalez is healthy, and hitting at Coors Field surely doesn't hurt. He'll still come off the board in the early rounds of drafts, and if he stays healthy for an entire season, look out. You best make sure to plan for the worst, though.

Rockies | Wilin Rosario loses in arbitration

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 14:48:04 -0800

Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario lost his arbitration case with the team Wednesday, Feb. 18, and he'll make $2.8 million this year instead of the $3.3 million he requested.

Fantasy Tip: Rosario will share time behind the dish this year with Nick Hundley. He was exposed against right-handed pitchers and away from Coors Field, but has the power to be a midrange starting fantasy catcher. He'll be cheaper this year, as well.

Rockies | Rex Brothers loses weight

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 09:44:03 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers has reported to camp 10 to 12 pounds lighter after cutting out squats and leg presses in the offseason and moving to agility and movement exercises.

Fantasy Tip: Brothers is a nice speculation pick in the late rounds of mixed leagues for saves or as a handcuff to the aging LaTroy Hawkins.

Rockies | Adam Ottavino pitched up in zone

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 13:22:26 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP Adam Ottavino said started pitching up in the zone on purpose late last year, and he finished 1-4 with a 3.60 ERA in 65 innings over 75 outings. "I also paid attention to guys like Lance Lynn or Jordan Zimmermann. They're doing similar things. That area, that's like a strike, but just a little bit too high. It yields a lot of weak popups and swings and misses," Ottavino said.
