Free-agent QB Eric Crouch (CFL) signed with the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks Tuesday, July 12. The former Heisman Trophy winner at Nebraska is expected to compete with QBs D.J. Shockley and Jeremiah Masoli for the starting QB job. He hasn't played professional football since an appearance with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL in 2006.

Boston College LB Mark Herzlich was drafted by the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League Monday, May 2, but it is unclear if he will sign. Texas A&M QB Jerrod Johnson was selected with the first overall pick. Fresno State QB Ryan Colburn and Mississippi QB Jeremiah Masoli were also taken in the UFL draft.

The United Football League would not allow Florida Tuskers kicker Nick Novak to sign with an unidentified NFL team, a source told Aaron Wilson, of NationalFootballPost.com. The Tuskers were willing to grant Novak his release and the NFL team was willing to pay a $150,000 release fee, but UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue denied the move.

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue is paying close attention to what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides surrounding free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons). "If the opportunity arises for the UFL to pursue Vick, we will do so only after careful discussions with Michael and his representatives. We would however, look favorably on his participation in our League," Huyghue said. He said he believes the UFL provides Vick a perfect opportunity to regain his playing ability and mentally prepare for being part of a professional football team.

Judd Zulgad, of The Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports free-agent QB Brooks Bollinger (Cowboys) is considering joining the UFL. He was selected by the Orlando franchise last month and is giving consideration to playing in the four-team league. Bollinger said he has spoken with Orlando head coach Jim Haslett and is leaving his options open. Bollinger added he has spoken with a couple of NFL franchises, but admits the thought of bouncing around the league gets more difficult as he becomes older.

UFL | Losman looking to return to NFL next year

ESPN.com reports UFL QB J.P. Losman decided to choose playing time instead of being an NFL backup. He said he is trying to have as much success as possible in the UFL with hopes of creating some buzz and then going through the NFL free agent process again next year. He currently is the most marquee player to join the UFL. Losman started 33 times for the Buffalo Bills over the past four seasons. He said he didn't want to wait around in the NFL for someone to suffer an injury or not play well.
