Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton (leg) rammed his right leg into the outfield wall in a game Tuesday, Aug. 4, against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, he winced and stretched his leg, but remained in the game.
Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) finished hitless in three at-bats to drop his average to .225. While it was good he could finish the game, playing in pain with an injury to his legs certainly doesn't help.

Fantasy Tip: DeSclafani ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has won back-to-back starts, both against the contending Cards, and he has lasted six or more starts in three in a row. He is a solid mid-level FantasyScore option, especially on the road where he is 4-2 with a 2.41 ERA in 11 outings while the opponent is hitting just .202.

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said all of the team's young pitchers, including SPs Anthony DeSclafani, Michael Lorenzen, Raisel Iglesias, David Holmberg, Keyvius Sampson, Robert Stephenson, Brandon Finnegan and John Lamb will have their innings monitored as the season wears on. "The biggest challenge is for a lot of guys who will be considered for call-ups for September or even earlier. We'll have guys who don't have that first major-league season where they pitched in September and had a chance to take their workload from 145 innings or 150 to 175 or 185. We'll have a lot of guys who we'll have to be cautious with their innings."
Fantasy Tip: That's not what owners of any of these pitchers want to hear, but it's a reality that often affects all young pitchers and their fantasy owners as the season winds down. On FantasyScore, none of the Reds young pitchers is ever a slam dunk, and their daily value will likely only continue to plummet if they are kept on pitch counts or innings limits.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is one of the team's top pitching prospects, and he is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 36 innings (six starts) since being promoted to Class AAA Louisville. His high strikeout upside and top-of-the-rotation potential makes him one to own already in keeper leagues. He'll likely have minimal value in all other leagues until 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) will remain a high upside option once he returns to the lineup as his 51 stolen bases on the season lead the major leagues.

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto isn't in the starting lineup Sunday, Aug. 2, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. 2B Skip Schumaker will start in left field and hit second in the order, while 2B Ivan De Jesus will start at first base and hit eighth against RHP Charlie Morton.
Fantasy Tip: De Jesus ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) is hitting .317 through 73 plate appearances against righties this season. It would be nicer to see him a little higher in the order, but De Jesus has some upside to offer FantasyScore owners. Schumaker ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has an on-base percentage of just .305 for the season, and he has very little to offer FantasyScore owners despite hitting at the top of the lineup.

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce is back in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Saturday, Aug. 1. He will bat cleanup and play right field. OF Marlon Byrd, who played right field Friday, July 31, will move back to left field and bat fifth.
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) is 8-for-22 (.364) with two home runs and 10 RBIs over the past week, making him worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups. He is 3-for-12 (.250) with a double and an RBI in his career against Cole.

Fantasy Tip: Suarez ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is batting .350 (7-for-20) against Pittsburgh this season and is 1-for-2 versus Cole in his career. His cap-friendly price and offensive production make him a useful player to have in FantasyScore lineups.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson is the Reds' top pitching prospect and is a potential candidate to join the rotation at some point this season. However, he only has made five starts at the Class AAA level, so it is likely he'll require a little more minor league seasoning. He is an arm to watch, though, and a potential stash candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Jason Bourgeois ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) draws into the lineup in place of Bruce ($5,200, 10.4% of cap), and Bourgeois will bat second against Pirates SP Jeff Locke ($5,600, 11.2% of cap). Bourgeois is a worthy low-priced flier for FantasyScore players Friday, especially at his cap hit. Stay tuned on the Bruce trade front.

Fantasy Tip: Chapman remains an elite fantasy closer wherever he's pitching. Owners in need of saves should immediately add J.J. Hoover, as he's the likely replacement in the ninth inning for the Reds if they do indeed trade Chapman.
Fri, 31 Jul 2015 08:24:33 -0700
Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman is being eyed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. The Yankees appear to be more involved with San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel, though.
Fantasy Tip: Chapman is one of the most dominant closers in the game and is an elite fantasy fireman. That won't change if he's dealt to a new team. J.J. Hoover would be the likely replacement in the ninth for the Reds, so stash him now if you're looking for more saves.
Fri, 31 Jul 2015 08:08:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: With Leake out of the Cincy rotation, another spot opens up. Is it possible the Reds will recall top pitching prospect Robert Stephenson to fill the spot? Dynasty and keeper league owners should already be all over Stephenson, and those in deep mixed leagues may want to follow suit.
Fri, 31 Jul 2015 06:21:10 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) has been on a tear of late, with 10 RBI in his last five games. Citi Field is among the best parks for hitters, but the lineup could negatively impact Bruce's fantasy worth.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 21:25:15 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Leake ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has been a bargain at FantasyScore lately, and if he is traded, staying in the NL with the Giants would likely allow him to maintain his current fantasy value.
