Reds | Johnny Cueto will become free agent

Mon, 04 May 2015 09:44:33 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto hasn't had contract extension talks with the team since opening day, and he will become a free agent after the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) has a 2.72 ERA and two wins in six starts this year despite allowing five earned runs in six innings to the Atlanta Braves yesterday. He'll continue to be a strong FantasyScore pitching option every five days

Reds | Jason Marquis should make next start

Sun, 03 May 2015 14:18:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Jason Marquis (forearm) was fine Sunday, May 3, one day after taking a line drive off his right forearm. Manager Bryan Price said Marquis should make his next start.

Fantasy Tip: Marquis ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has a high 5.22 ERA but is 3-1 in four decisions with nine walks and 28 strikeouts. He is a decent low-cost option depending on the pitching matchup.

Reds | Johnny Cueto roughed up

Sun, 03 May 2015 14:13:24 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings of work as the Reds fell to the Atlanta Braves, 5-0, on Sunday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) just had a bad day. All five of his starts prior to this have been good, so don't hesitate to start him again next time out.

Reds | Zack Cozart injured

Sun, 03 May 2015 13:58:57 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (finger) bruised his right index finger fielding a ground ball Sunday, May 3, against the Atlanta Braves. He left the game. X-rays were negative.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) may miss a game, but the odds are equally good he'll be all right for the next contest. Keep an eye on his progress.

Reds | Skip Schumaker starting

Sun, 03 May 2015 09:34:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Skip Schumaker will be the starting left fielder against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 3, and is batting first in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Schumaker ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has not received many starts this season and has four hits in 20 at-bats. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use for their lineups.

Reds | Brennan Boesch will play Sunday

Sun, 03 May 2015 09:30:30 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Brennan Boesch will be the starting center fielder against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has not done much at the plate in his limited playing time this season and should not be a starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

Reds | Marlon Byrd sitting out

Sun, 03 May 2015 09:20:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd is not in the starting lineup Sunday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Byrd ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has struggled at the plate this season and likely is receiving a day off. Skip Schumaker ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will receive a rare start but is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Reds | Billy Hamilton not in lineup

Sun, 03 May 2015 09:04:14 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton is not in the starting lineup Sunday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) likely is just receiving a day off. Brennan Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will be the starting center fielder but should not be an option for owners on FantasyScore.

Reds | Johnny Cueto off to great start

Sun, 03 May 2015 07:28:08 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto has the best WHIP in the National League and has a chance to take the MLB leads in both innings pitched and strikeouts when he pitches Sunday, May 3, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,700, 17.4% of cap) is starting his contract year the right way. Cueto's 1.95 ERA is more than a full run better than his xFIP, but with a strikeout rate of 9.24 K/9, Cueto is a dominant FantasyScore pitcher in matchups just like this one.

Reds | Zack Cozart showing power stroke

Sat, 02 May 2015 19:11:02 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-4 win over the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 2, and he now leads all shortstops with five home runs this season.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) hit four home runs in 506 at-bats last year, and he has already topped that total in just 91 at-bats this year. It is hard to imagine him continuing this pace all season, but in the meantime, he is a great value play at FantasyScore.

Reds | Anthony DeSclafani has worst start

Fri, 01 May 2015 19:41:17 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Anthony DeSclafani allowed four runs on four hits and walked five in five innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves Friday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: After throwing at least six innings in his first three starts of the season, DeSclafani ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has lasted just five innings in back-to-back starts. Hitters could be figuring him out a bit, and it might be smart to pass on the young pitcher at FantasyScore in his next start.

Reds | Tony Cingrani not in rotation plans

Fri, 01 May 2015 14:51:48 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Tony Cingrani will continue to pitch out of the bullpen, according to manager Bryan Price. Cingrani would likely need to be designated to the minors to stretch out his innings in order to join the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to ignore Cingrani in the majority of formats, as it doesn't appear he'll join the rotation any time soon. He is also too far down the closer depth chart to warrant attention from the save chasers.

Reds | Homer Bailey has torn UCL

Fri, 01 May 2015 11:25:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery. He's expected to return during the 2016 season. Dr. Timothy Kremchek will perform the surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Drop Bailey in all single-year fantasy formats. Tony Cingrani may be the Reds' best bet for a long-term rotation spot to replace Bailey, and he could be useful if you're hurting for rotation arms in deep mixed or NL-only leagues.

Reds | Homer Bailey done for year

Fri, 01 May 2015 11:14:07 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season. He will return next year.

Fantasy Tip: You can now safely drop Bailey in all single-year formats, and he'll come at an extremely cheap injury discount in 2016 drafts. Michael Lorenzen ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) was unsuccessful in his major league debut filling in for Bailey this week, and he might not be the short-term solution for the rotation. Tony Cingrani has the most upside and may be the best long-term solution this year. If you're searching for rotation help in deep mixed leagues, he's worth a speculative add.

Reds | Brandon Phillips a late scratch

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 14:54:30 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (illness) was a late scratch from the lineup against the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 30. 2B Skip Schumaker will start at second base instead.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to remove Phillips ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) from your lineups Thursday, and don't expect him to miss more than a game or two. Schumaker ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is 3-for-17 to start the season, so FantasyScore players should aim higher Thursday.
