Reds | Devin Mesoraco nearing return

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 22:39:26 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (quadriceps) was sidelined again Tuesday, March 31, but he might be able to return to the lineup Wednesday, April 1, for the Cactus League spring game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco appears to be on track to be ready for the regular season opener. He was red hot for long stretches last season, and he is a decent mid-level FantasyScore play at $5,700 (or 11.4% of cap) when healthy.

Reds | Aroldis Chapman is not hurt

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 16:38:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman is not hurt. The Reds say there was a misunderstanding.

Fantasy Tip: Chapman is arguably the best relief pitcher in fantasy baseball. He'll command an early-round pick to roster.

Reds | Aroldis Chapman has hamstring issue

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 15:16:05 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman (hamstring) was taken out of his outing for precautionary reasons Tuesday, March 31, with the team concerned about his right hamstring. Chapman said he is fine.

Fantasy Tip: Chapman is an elite fantasy closer because of his strikeout ability. His condition doesn't seem to be very serious, but it's worth keeping an eye on as we get closer to opening day next Monday.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco has sore hammy

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 08:45:55 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hamstring) is out Monday, March 30, due to a sore hamstring. He said he could play if it were the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($5,700, 11.4% of your cap) is one of the premiere catchers in fantasy baseball and will be a daily consideration on FantasyScore.

Reds | Homer Bailey faces minor leaguers

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 15:52:15 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) allowed a run and three hits in three innings of work against minor leaguers Friday, March 27, and he walked two and struck out four. It was Bailey's second spring outing after coming back from elbow surgery last September. Bailey is focused on getting ready for the regular season, and he is feeling really good. He threw all of his pitches in the outing Friday. The Reds expect Bailey to miss one or two starts in April.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey was pretty solid in 2014 before he was shut down with the elbow ailment. He'll come at a very nice value in drafts this year in the later rounds, and he could return excellent value as a top-end starting pitcher at the end of 2015.

Reds | Johnny Cueto returns to camp

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:39:32 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto returned to camp Thursday, March 26, after going to the Dominican Republic to be with his mother, who needed open-heart surgery. Cueto missed his scheduled start last Friday, but he feels he's on track for opening day. He was working out with the pitchers Thursday morning. Cueto will have two more spring starts before he faces the Pittsburgh Pirates April 6 in Cincinnati. Manager Bryan Price said Cueto will likely throw in a minor league game in his next outing.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) should be good to go for opening day against the Bucs. Cueto has been very solid in his career at Cincinnati, even though it's known as more of a pitcher's park. He also has dominated Pittsburgh in his career to the tune of a 2.21 ERA. It's safe to say that he'll be a top-flight option at FantasyScore to kick off the MLB season.

Reds | Johnny Cueto still has time to be ready for OD

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 16:22:07 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto still has time to return, get two starts and be ready for opening day, according to manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) is a fantasy ace who should be drafted in the early rounds to anchor fantasy rotations. A matchup with the Pirates -- they scored the 10th most runs in 2014 -- isn't ideal for spending heavily to use Cueto in FantasyScore games, though.

Reds | Homer Bailey should be back in April

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 16:20:52 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) is on track to return by late April, according to manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Last year, Bailey ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) pitched well after the month of May and before his season ended due to injury in August. When healthy, Bailey has top-30 starting pitcher upside. Draft him expecting slightly less since he is coming off an injury.

Reds | Billy Hamilton working on bunts

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:17:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton is working on his bunt skills in order to get on base more. Hamilton worked along with Delino DeShields, a former major leaguer and current manager at Triple-A Louisville.

Fantasy Tip: DeShields was a base stealer in his days with the Montreal Expos, and Hamilton would do well to learn from the likes of him. If he could get on base more Hamilton is capable of 80-100 stolen bases a season, but he's only worth a middle or late-round selection because of his struggles at the plate.

Reds | Johnny Cueto away from Reds

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 15:54:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto has returned to the Dominican Republic to be with a family member who is dealing with health issues. Manager Bryan Price said it's unknown when Cueto will rejoin the team. He is currently scheduled to start on opening day against the Pittsburgh Pirates April 6. Cueto was also scheduled to start in spring training Friday, March 20, but he didn't make the outing. He will continue to throw in the Dominican Republic.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto should be ready to pitch in the season opener, but even if he has his first start of the 2015 season pushed back, he should be considered a fantasy baseball ace. Look to draft him in the early rounds.

Reds | Cincy announces rotation

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:22:38 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SPs Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Anthony DeSclafani, Jason Marquis and Raisel Iglesias will comprise the team's starting rotation to enter the regular season. SP Paul Maholm is competing for a bullpen spot.

Fantasy Tip: Cueto is really the only pitcher in this five that deserves heavy fantasy baseball attention as an ace for your fake staff. The others are all likely just NL-only targets, with DeSclafani and Iglesias possessing intriguing upside.

Reds | Joey Votto feels normal this spring

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:05:37 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (quadriceps, knee), who missed 100 games last year with knee and quadriceps injuries, said he feels normal this spring even after being held out for the first four spring games.

Fantasy Tip: This is more of a better safe than sorry approach for Votto, whose power numbers can be explosive when he is healthy. For now, Votto should be drafted no earlier than the middle of most fantasy leagues as he recovers from numerous injuries.

Reds | Raisel Iglesias front-runner for rotation

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 14:40:18 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Raisel Iglesias is considered the front-runner to claim one of the open rotation sports.

Fantasy Tip: The Cuban defector is a complete wildcard, but the Reds invested $27 million over seven years for Iglesias' services, so they're fond of him. He is likely best left alone in the majority of formats, but he is definitely a name to stash away and monitor. In NL-only or cavernous mixed leagues, a speculative late-round flier isn't out of the question. Additionally, continue to check back for updates and monitor his progress throughout the spring, Iglesias' value is extremely fluid at this point.

Reds | Tony Cingrani will pitch from the 'Pen

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 14:34:17 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Tony Cingrani will be used as a reliever for the remainder of spring training and will pitch out of the bullpen this season, manager Bryan Price said Monday, March 16.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani dealt with shoulder issues last season, and unless he somehow manages to work his way back into the rotation, he carries little fantasy value. Cingrani could prove to be a valuable middle reliever in mixed leagues, if he can keep his ratios low and move his K/9 closer to his 10.3 mark from 2013. Still, it is best to take a wait-and-see approach with Cingrani.

Reds | Jason Marquis likely has rotation spot

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 15:17:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Jason Marquis is likely to have a spot in the starting rotation when camp breaks at the end of March.

Fantasy Tip: It is likely to be a fourth or fifth spot at best, but at least it is a spot after a year on the shelf with injuries. Marquis may be worth a late-round flier if you need some pitching help for your bench, but his fantasy value has dwindled considerably from Marquis' heyday.
