Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton is hitting just .188 against right-handers this season. He's a much better play in traditional leagues because of his elite speed than in DFS. He'd be a very low-end consideration against Chase Anderson.

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton (thumb) entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning Wednesday, May 4, after aggravating his jammed left thumb the day before. Hamilton's injury has prevented him from gripping a bat.
Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's injury probably won't land him on the DL, but he could miss a few more days. With Zack Cozart back from injury, too, Hamilton will likely return to the bottom of the batting order, which isn't good news for his already dwindling fantasy value. His stolen base opportunities are on the decline hitting that low, and his speed is his only real asset to owners.

Cincinnati Reds RP Ross Ohlendorf pitched the final inning of a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the ninth inning Wednesday, May 4. However, Ohlendorf allowed two hits and an earned run while striking out one but wasn't awarded a save.
Fantasy Tip: Even though it wasn't a traditional save opportunity, it's notable because Ohlendorf was tasked with finishing the game after Tony Cingrani pitched the eighth. Caleb Cotham and J.J. Hoover have been terrible for a bullpen that has allowed a run in an MLB record-worst 22 straight games. Cingrani and/or Ohlendorf could be next in line for ninth-inning work if you're brave and desperate enough to mess with this shaky situation in Cincy.

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips hit his second home run of the season against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, May 4, and his first in 22 games since April 8. Phillips went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored and RBI and is now hitting .281 on the year.
Fantasy Tip: The veteran isn't flashy, but he continues to contribute across the board with two home runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases. Phillips remains relevant in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) hit his third home run of the season in his return to the lineup Wednesday, May 4. Cozart had been dealing with tendonitis in his surgically repaired right knee and missed the first two games of the series against the San Francisco Giants. He's now hitting .342 on the season.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart mentioned he'll likely have to manage his tendonitis for the rest of the year, so he could be rested here and there. The way he's hitting, though, fantasy owners won't be worried at all. Cozart showed signs of breaking out last year before his injury and has picked up where he left off. At a shallow position, his power is attractive everywhere. Pick him up if he's still out there in your league.

The Cincinnati Reds bullpen set a major league record by allowing a run in 21 straight games after RP Caleb Cotham gave up an RBI infield single to San Francisco Giants 2B Kelby Tomlinson Tuesday, May 3. They went into the game Tuesday with a 6.54 ERA and had given up 69 runs in 95 innings with 54 walks, the most in the majors. Their relievers had allowed 22 home runs in 27 games.
Fantasy Tip: It's been very ugly. Fantasy owners of Cotham and Hoover haven't been able to watch. Searching for saves in Cincy has proved more detrimental than helpful, so it's probably best to avoid this situation altogether. With Hoover and Cotham struggling the most, Ross Ohlendorf and Tony Cingrani may be next in line for save chances, if you're feeling brave and are desperate for saves.

Fantasy Tip: This provides a ray of hope that he can avoid the disabled list. He was hitting .316 the last seven days to get over the Mendoza Line in what has been a sluggish start. His elite speed keeps him as a midrange outfielder in traditional leagues, but it doesn't translate consistently enough into DFS.

Fantasy Tip: Holt is hitting .348 with two steals in 23 at-bats. He's a basement option against the struggling Jake Peavy. Hamilton aggravated his thumb injury Tuesday, and you'd have to think the disabled list is an option.
Wed, 04 May 2016 06:56:46 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cozart returns against Jake Peavy, and opposing hitters are batting .382 against him. Cozart is an upper-middle option at shortstop.

Cincinnati Reds SP John Lamb made his first start of the 2016 season Tuesday, May 3, against the San Francisco Giants and he was solid, allowing just one run in six innings. He also surrendered six hits, three walks and struck out four.
Fantasy Tip: Well, after a disappointing rookie year that saw him go 1-5 in 10 starts with a 5.80 ERA and 1.55 WHIP, Lamb couldn't ask for a better start to his sophomore campaign. He's worth a stab in the deepest leagues, as this is someone that comes with exceptional strikeout potential. In fact, he racked up 58 K's in 49 2/3 innings in 2015. Now that he's healthy, he'll get more run in the rotation with tonight's performance.

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton (thumb) exited the team's game Tuesday, May 3, against the San Francisco Giants because of a jammed left thumb. He's had issues with that same thumb dating back to when he made a spectacular catch on April 15.
Fantasy Tip: Hamilton has already missed games this season due to the thumb ailment, so this is certainly not good news as it pertains to his short-term outlook. In fact, he's now hurt his left thumb three different times this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if he were to land on the disabled list. If that is indeed the case, Adam Duvall and Tyler Holt would benefit.

Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart "will play a lot" with C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) possibly out for the rest of the year with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to manager Bryan Price. C Ramon Cabrera will serve as the backup, and C/3B Jordan Pacheco is the third backstop if a need arises. Barnhart, a switch-hitter, has improved his offensive game and has been hitting the ball hard this year.
Fantasy Tip: Barnhart has 14 hits in 47 at-bats (.298) this year after slashing .252/.324/.326 with three homers and 18 RBI in 242 at-bats in 2015. He's a second catcher option for those in two-catcher or NL-only leagues. He could be a decent short-term replacement if you own Mesoraco or d'Arnaud.
Tue, 03 May 2016 13:22:38 -0700
Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) is not in the lineup once again Tuesday, May 3, against the San Francisco Giants. Cozart's replacement is SS Ivan De Jesus, who will hit second against Giants SP Jeff Samardzija.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart is likely day-to-day, so keep him stashed on your bench until the team activates him. As for DeJesus, he is mostly a slap hitter with limited power so you may want to look for another shortstop in daily leagues.
Mon, 02 May 2016 23:36:12 -0700
Cincinnati Reds SP Jon Moscot (shoulder) is listed as the probable starter for Tuesday, May 3, against the San Francisco Giants. However, he was bothered by soreness in his left shoulder last time out, and the team will decide early in the day whether to let him pitch.
Fantasy Tip: Moscot is a risky fantasy play in both seasonal NL-only formats and DFS. It's a good idea to steer clear.

Fantasy Tip: Votto tied a season best with the three runs driven in. He has started to pick up the pace over the past nine games, driving in eight runs. However, he is still hitting just .231, and he has only four extra-base hits in 91 at-bats. Stick with him, though, as he is too valuable to consider dropping.
