Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco should be replaced in all seasonal leagues, and even in keeper/dynasty formats, you'll really want to consider how much benefit there is to stashing the backstop. It likely isn't worth it. Tucker Barnhart will take care of catching duties most nights, and he is a viable deep mixed, two-catcher and NL-only option with a respectable .278 batting average to start the season through 59 plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: The lack of power recently hasn't stopped Bruce from driving in runs, as he leads the team with 21 RBI. He struck out two more times tonight, however, and has fanned eight times in five May games, so he's not exactly locked in. With that said, Bruce is always a threat to drive in runs and should remain in lineups.

Fantasy Tip: Duvall has been an all-or-nothing proposition lately, fanning 17 times in 28 at-bats to end April, only to open May with one strikeout over his first five contests of the month. The 27-year-old, who is known more for his defense, is not a recommended option in fantasy quite yet, but his name is one to monitor since he is locked into an every-day role and obviously possesses the power to make a difference if this recent surge proves to be more than a fluke.

Fantasy Tip: That's consecutive games with a homer for the 34-year-old, who had left the yard once over his first 23 contests. Phillips is batting .293 and seems to have a firm hold of the No. 4 spot in the order behind Joey Votto and in front of Jay Bruce and Eugenio Suarez. Even in his mid-30s, the three-time All-Star brings a nice mix of power and speed to a weak fantasy position. Owners can do much worse than him at a middle infield spot.

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton is batting second for the second time this season Thursday, May 5, and will most likely remain in that spot for the foreseeable future, according to manager Bryan Price. The move was made in part to allow Hamilton to use his speed to be more disruptive while also placing 3B Eugenio Suarez in more of a run-producing role at the sixth spot in the order.
Fantasy Tip: Price made it clear Hamilton would have to continue hitting - he was batting .296 over his last nine games entering Thursday - in order to make the change stick, but it is a good deal for all parties involved from a fantasy perspective. Hamilton should have at least one more at-bat per game to steal bases, while Suarez - already leading the team in RBI entering Thursday - will get regular opportunities to drive in Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce.

Cincinnati Reds SP Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) has not begun to throw and will not return from the disabled list when eligible Wednesday, May 11, according to manager Bryan Price. "He has to cool off and the inflammation has to cool down before we consider getting him to throw again," Price said. "I would be more optimistic (Iglesias could return) after the midpoint of the month than I would saying by the 15th or by the time we go on the road that he's ready to go. I don't know if I can safely say that right now. We're going to want him to be able to play catch, play long toss, throw a bullpen before thinking about putting him back into a ballgame."
Fantasy Tip: The Reds are going to take a conservative approach with Iglesias, which means fantasy owners could be without his services for a few more weeks. He is worth stashing in the majority of seasonal leagues, so stay tuned for updates.

Fantasy Tip: Cravy should be viewed as a desperation start in all fantasy formats Friday, and especially in daily contests. He has failed to register a win through seven career starts with an underwhelming 5.91 ERA and 6.5 K/9.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton is hitting just .188 against right-handers this season. He's a much better play in traditional leagues because of his elite speed than in DFS. He'd be a very low-end consideration against Chase Anderson.

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton (thumb) entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning Wednesday, May 4, after aggravating his jammed left thumb the day before. Hamilton's injury has prevented him from gripping a bat.
Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's injury probably won't land him on the DL, but he could miss a few more days. With Zack Cozart back from injury, too, Hamilton will likely return to the bottom of the batting order, which isn't good news for his already dwindling fantasy value. His stolen base opportunities are on the decline hitting that low, and his speed is his only real asset to owners.

Cincinnati Reds RP Ross Ohlendorf pitched the final inning of a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the ninth inning Wednesday, May 4. However, Ohlendorf allowed two hits and an earned run while striking out one but wasn't awarded a save.
Fantasy Tip: Even though it wasn't a traditional save opportunity, it's notable because Ohlendorf was tasked with finishing the game after Tony Cingrani pitched the eighth. Caleb Cotham and J.J. Hoover have been terrible for a bullpen that has allowed a run in an MLB record-worst 22 straight games. Cingrani and/or Ohlendorf could be next in line for ninth-inning work if you're brave and desperate enough to mess with this shaky situation in Cincy.

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips hit his second home run of the season against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, May 4, and his first in 22 games since April 8. Phillips went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored and RBI and is now hitting .281 on the year.
Fantasy Tip: The veteran isn't flashy, but he continues to contribute across the board with two home runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases. Phillips remains relevant in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) hit his third home run of the season in his return to the lineup Wednesday, May 4. Cozart had been dealing with tendonitis in his surgically repaired right knee and missed the first two games of the series against the San Francisco Giants. He's now hitting .342 on the season.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart mentioned he'll likely have to manage his tendonitis for the rest of the year, so he could be rested here and there. The way he's hitting, though, fantasy owners won't be worried at all. Cozart showed signs of breaking out last year before his injury and has picked up where he left off. At a shallow position, his power is attractive everywhere. Pick him up if he's still out there in your league.

The Cincinnati Reds bullpen set a major league record by allowing a run in 21 straight games after RP Caleb Cotham gave up an RBI infield single to San Francisco Giants 2B Kelby Tomlinson Tuesday, May 3. They went into the game Tuesday with a 6.54 ERA and had given up 69 runs in 95 innings with 54 walks, the most in the majors. Their relievers had allowed 22 home runs in 27 games.
Fantasy Tip: It's been very ugly. Fantasy owners of Cotham and Hoover haven't been able to watch. Searching for saves in Cincy has proved more detrimental than helpful, so it's probably best to avoid this situation altogether. With Hoover and Cotham struggling the most, Ross Ohlendorf and Tony Cingrani may be next in line for save chances, if you're feeling brave and are desperate for saves.

Fantasy Tip: This provides a ray of hope that he can avoid the disabled list. He was hitting .316 the last seven days to get over the Mendoza Line in what has been a sluggish start. His elite speed keeps him as a midrange outfielder in traditional leagues, but it doesn't translate consistently enough into DFS.
Wed, 04 May 2016 07:09:35 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Holt is hitting .348 with two steals in 23 at-bats. He's a basement option against the struggling Jake Peavy. Hamilton aggravated his thumb injury Tuesday, and you'd have to think the disabled list is an option.
