Reds | Jon Moscot uncertain for Tuesday

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:36:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Jon Moscot (shoulder) is listed as the probable starter for Tuesday, May 3, against the San Francisco Giants. However, he was bothered by soreness in his left shoulder last time out, and the team will decide early in the day whether to let him pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Moscot is a risky fantasy play in both seasonal NL-only formats and DFS. It's a good idea to steer clear.

Reds | Joey Votto powers up against old mate

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:35:30 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run against San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto, his former teammate, in a loss Monday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: Votto tied a season best with the three runs driven in. He has started to pick up the pace over the past nine games, driving in eight runs. However, he is still hitting just .231, and he has only four extra-base hits in 91 at-bats. Stick with him, though, as he is too valuable to consider dropping.

Reds | Brandon Finnegan solid in no-decision

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:34:26 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Brandon Finnegan (hamstring) allowed three earned runs, six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Monday, May 2, against the San Francisco Giants. He said after the outing that he hurt his hamstring in the third inning, but pitched through it. He said he thinks he'll be fine for his next scheduled start.

Fantasy Tip: From all indications it sounds like Finnegan just tweaked the hamstring, and the team removed him after six innings rather than have him push it. Still, it's something for fantasy owners to monitor going forward.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco weighing options

Mon, 02 May 2016 21:46:24 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) is weighing his options, including playing through a torn labrum. "I'm going to definitely have to get surgery at some point," Mesoraco said Monday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain if Mesoraco will be able to return anytime soon, but he should be reserved until he can officially return and prove his health in at least a handful of games without any setbacks.

Reds | Homer Bailey shut down for 5-7 days

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:00:04 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) said he expects to be shut down for five to seven days.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey suffered a bit of a setback within the past week, so this probably pushes his return to the major leagues back a little bit further. Given his track record, he's worth stashing in just about all leagues, but with this latest news, owners shouldn't be surprised if his return is delayed until the summer months.

Reds | John Lamb might start Tuesday

Mon, 02 May 2016 16:42:32 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP John Lamb could start Tuesday, May 2, against the San Francisco Giants, in the opinion of John Fay. Manager Bryan Price hasn't yet discussed SPs Robert Stephenson or Cody Reed for the assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Jon Moscot was originally slated to make the start, but he's dealing with a shoulder ailment at the moment that should make him unavailable. While he showed some potential last year as a rookie, Lamb is a very unsafe option right now, given his glaring struggles this season at Class AAA Louisville. Stephenson would have the best outlook of the three, although that's not saying much.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco to DL with torn labrum

Mon, 02 May 2016 15:39:21 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list with a torn labrum in his left shoulder Monday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco can be replaced in all seasonal leagues, and while the good news is it isn't his throwing shoulder, the backstop is set to miss another season of action. Tucker Barnhart is a viable add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only leagues given the abundance of at-bats he'll receive, especially since he is 13-for-43 to start the season. Still, he is a low-end backstop in all fantasy formats.

Reds | Zack Cozart nursing tendinitis

Mon, 02 May 2016 13:03:35 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) could have played against the San Francisco Giants Monday, May 2, but manager Bryan Price gave him the day off to deal with tendinitis in his right knee.

Fantasy Tip: Monitor Cozart's injury status over the next few days, and it isn't out of the question to make preparations for a replacement in case the injury lingers. However, it sounds like Cozart is just nursing a minor ailment. He is off to a strong start with 14 runs and a .347/.350/.533 slash line. Stay tuned for updates.

Reds | Devin Mesoraco not in lineup

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:40:41 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco remains out of the starting lineup Monday, May 2. C Tucker Barnhart is behind the plate and batting eighth against San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco is hitting .140/.218/.160 with one RBI in 50 at-bats and hasn't started since last Wednesday. It's time to start looking for other catching options in mixed leagues. Barnhart, on the other hand, is hitting .302 (13-for-43). However, he has only four career home runs and is nothing more than a low-end second catcher in two-catcher formats.

Reds | Zack Cozart out of lineup

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:38:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) is not in the starting lineup Monday, May 2. SS Ivan De Jesus is starting at the 6 and is batting second against San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto. Also, OF Billy Hamilton moves to the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart's injury is perplexing because it's the same knee he had surgery on last year. Make plans to replace him in case he's out for an extended period. De Jesus has very little power or speed and is a weak daily option against Cueto. Hamilton is only useful for is speed and struggles to reach base consistently, but he gains some daily value in the move to the top of the order today.

Reds | Joey Votto had terrible April

Mon, 02 May 2016 09:49:59 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto's .640 OPS in April was the worst full month of his career, and he was 0-for-19 at one point, which was his longest hitless streak of his career. He finished the month hitting .325 (9-for-25) but had a slash line of just .229/.327/.313 with two home runs and a double on the month. Votto said he would prefer to retire from the game rather than play at a poor level. He has eight years and $199 million left on his current deal.

Fantasy Tip: The retirement talk is a little overblown. Votto is off to a slow start, sure, but he's an elite hitter that should bounce back over the coming months. There is reason to have concerns, though, especially with a weak lineup around him. This would be a great time to try and buy low on Votto, but keep in mind that his runs and RBI opportunities will be limited on a rebuilding club.

Reds | Joey Votto talks retirement

Sun, 01 May 2016 20:41:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto said he would rather retire than continue to play at a poor level.

Fantasy Tip: Votto is speaking out of frustration due to his terrible start, and he is too good of a hitter to struggle for the entire year. Consider him a buy-low candidate.

Reds | Zack Cozart pulled following knee injury

Sun, 01 May 2016 13:09:18 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) left the game Sunday, May 1, against the Pittsburgh Pirates with an apparent right knee injury. Cozart, who reached on an error to start the top of the eighth inning but was met by a trainer at second base shortly thereafter, appeared to point to his right knee before walking off the field.

Fantasy Tip: There is reason for concern here since it is the same knee Cozart had ACL surgery on last season. The 30-year-old just wrapped up an incredible April atop the Reds' order, batting .361 with two homers, nine RBI and 13 runs scored. Ivan De Jesus replaced him in the field and would be a big drop-off offensively, as he entered Sunday hitting .133.

Reds | Raisel Iglesias placed on DL

Sun, 01 May 2016 10:17:44 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 1, because of right shoulder impingement. The team recalled SP Tim Adleman from Class AAA Louisville. The team also transferred C Kyle Skipworth (ankle) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Tim Adleman is scheduled to start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and could stay in the starting rotation if he has a solid outing. Adleman could be valuable in NL-only leagues if he receives multiple starts but probably is not a great option in deeper mixed leagues. Robert Stephenson is also an option to join the rotation while Iglesias is sidelined. He posted solid numbers in his two starts earlier in the season and could be an option for owners on NL-only leagues and some deeper mixed leagues if he joins the rotation.

Reds | Tucker Barnhart remains in lineup Sunday

Sun, 01 May 2016 08:22:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart is in the starting lineup for the third consecutive day in place of C Devin Mesoraco Sunday, May 1, versus Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke.

Fantasy Tip: Barnhart is batting .308 with three doubles and four RBI through 39 at-bats and should be viewed as a value play in daily fantasy games. On the other hand, Mesoraco has played just twice in the past week and is batting .140 with one RBI through 50 at-bats. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats for now.
