Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the starting lineup Tuesday, April 28. C Brayan Pena is starting behind the plate and hitting eighth in the batting order against Milwaukee Brewers SP Kyle Lohse.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco doesn't appear to be close to returning to action anytime soon, aside from maybe a pinch-hitting role. There's still a chance he lands on the DL, too. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a much better hitter against right-handers (.272 average, all five homers in 2014), making him a sneaky sleeper option against Lohse at FantasyScore tonight.

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips posted his first extra-base hit of the season Monday, April 27, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He had an RBI double in the sixth inning after posting 18 singles in his first 18 hits this season.
Fantasy Tip: Phillips ($2,300; 4.6% of cap) is still a solid FantasyScore value despite the lack of XBH, as he is hitting .a respect .264 overall with eight RBIs.

Fantasy Tip: Bryan Price was shaking things up, and Cozart responded well. FantasyScore owners should like Cozart ($2,300; 4.6% of cap) a lot more at the two-hole rather than the bottom of the order due to more at-bats and runs scored.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart, who is hitting .303 on the season, was moved up to the second spot in the batting order Monday, April 27, with 2B Brandon Phillips dropping to sixth. 1B Joey Votto is now hitting third, and 3B Todd Frazier is in the cleanup spot.
Fantasy Tip: The most notable move is for Cozart ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) jumping up to the top of the lineup. While facing a tough matchup in the improving Jimmy Nelson of the Milwaukee Brewers Monday night, the two-hole boosts Cozart's FantasyScore value at shortstop.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) said he hasn't made much progress in his slow recovery from a hip impingement. "Nothing new," Mesoraco said. "It's getting a little better progressively, but not day-to-day." He hasn't caught in two weeks, and the Reds continue to avoid putting him on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) still doesn't appear close to playing, so hopefully you've already found a catching replacement for him in standard leagues. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) remains a low-priced catching option at FantasyScore. Only consider using him to save money when he's facing right-handed pitching.

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow ligament sprain Monday, April 27, and P Carlos Contreras was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move. The DL stint is retroactive to Friday, April 24.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) pitched exactly 5 2/3 innings in both of his starts after starting the season late due elbow issues. His last start was more encouraging, as he gave up just two runs while walking one and striking out three. Now he has another setback that will test his owner's patience in shallow mixed leagues. Raisel Iglesias, who started in Cincy's rotation, might be the best candidate to replace Bailey in the Reds' rotation. He'll be a low-end starter at FantasyScore that is only worth consideration in the right matchups.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the starting lineup Monday, April 27. C Brayan Pena is starting at catcher and hitting eighth in the batting order against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson.
Fantasy Tip: Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a matchup play at FantasyScore against right-handed pitchers, although he should be considered a weaker catching option today while facing the improving Nelson.

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce pinch hit in the ninth inning and struck out in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs Sunday, April 26, and he is now batting .161 on the year and has struck out 12 times in his last 20 at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has been out of the starting lineup the last two games to try to regroup, and even when he returns to the lineup, he needs to be avoided at FantasyScore until he figures things out at the plate.
Sun, 26 Apr 2015 07:12:33 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is receiving a rare start Sunday. Boesch has started off the season 2-for-12 at the plate and does not appear to be a great option for owners on FantasyScore.
Sun, 26 Apr 2015 07:11:44 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) appears to be receiving a day off and should return to the starting lineup in the next day or two. Brennan Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will take his place in the lineup, but owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart spent the majority of the winter watching video of himself, and said "I looked for the problem, I found it and I fixed it. It was all about getting my swing loaded before the pitch arrives." Cozart also credited retired SS Barry Larkin for giving him a few tips during spring training.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has four home runs through 17 games this season, which is significant because he only hit four through 147 games in 2014. He reached double-digit jacks in each of his first two full seasons in the majors, though, so this isn't foreign territory. FantasyScore players have a nice low-priced flier on their hands at a shallow position for as long as Cozart continues to stay hot.
Sun, 26 Apr 2015 06:46:03 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) hasn't started in 15 days, but he has been able to make a few pinch-hit appearances. Continue to avoid him in all formats until he returns and proves his health. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is nothing more than a low-priced flier for FantasyScore players Sunday.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 07:34:51 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has been limited to pinch hitting the last few games and is still not ready to play in a game. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has filled in well at catcher and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore since he has five hits in his last four games.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 07:32:13 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has seen limited playing time this season and only has two hits in 12 at-bats. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 07:21:58 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) likely is just receiving a day off and should return to the starting lineup soon. Brennan Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will fill in for Bruce but is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.
