Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce pinch hit in the ninth inning and struck out in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs Sunday, April 26, and he is now batting .161 on the year and has struck out 12 times in his last 20 at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has been out of the starting lineup the last two games to try to regroup, and even when he returns to the lineup, he needs to be avoided at FantasyScore until he figures things out at the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is receiving a rare start Sunday. Boesch has started off the season 2-for-12 at the plate and does not appear to be a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) appears to be receiving a day off and should return to the starting lineup in the next day or two. Brennan Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will take his place in the lineup, but owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart spent the majority of the winter watching video of himself, and said "I looked for the problem, I found it and I fixed it. It was all about getting my swing loaded before the pitch arrives." Cozart also credited retired SS Barry Larkin for giving him a few tips during spring training.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has four home runs through 17 games this season, which is significant because he only hit four through 147 games in 2014. He reached double-digit jacks in each of his first two full seasons in the majors, though, so this isn't foreign territory. FantasyScore players have a nice low-priced flier on their hands at a shallow position for as long as Cozart continues to stay hot.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) hasn't started in 15 days, but he has been able to make a few pinch-hit appearances. Continue to avoid him in all formats until he returns and proves his health. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is nothing more than a low-priced flier for FantasyScore players Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has been limited to pinch hitting the last few games and is still not ready to play in a game. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has filled in well at catcher and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore since he has five hits in his last four games.

Fantasy Tip: Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has seen limited playing time this season and only has two hits in 12 at-bats. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use.

Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) likely is just receiving a day off and should return to the starting lineup soon. Brennan Boesch ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will fill in for Bruce but is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: During the streak, Hamilton ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) has scored six runs and stolen three bases, and he currently ranks second in the NL in runs and first in steals. He offers a ton of upside because of his speed, and when he is actually reaching base with regularity like he is now, he is a great mid-range option at FantasyScore.

Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) hasn't even tried to catch yet while dealing with a hip impingement, but he plans to do some bullpen sessions in the next couple of days. He hasn't played since April 12 when he received a cortisone shot.
Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound like Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) is particularly close to returning to the starting lineup if he can't catch. You'll have to remain patient in standard leagues while scrounging the waiver wire for a capable replacement, if you haven't already done so. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should only be considered at FantasyScore as a low-end catching flyer against righties.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) said he's unsure how he initially hurt his hip, and he said it started hurting 10 days ago. His hip doesn't bother him when he swings, but only when he squats behind the plate. Mesoraco continues to receive treatment and is available to pinch hit.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900) is really frustrating his fantasy owners. He pinch hit Tuesday, and it wasn't believed that he'd need to go on the DL. However, if he doesn't return to the starting lineup soon, the Reds may have no choice. Brayan Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is strictly a matchup play against right-handed pitchers at FantasyScore.

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart said he watched countless hours of film on his swing in the offense, and he made some changes that appear to be paying off so far in 2015. "I looked for the problem, I found it and I fixed it," said Cozart. "It was all about getting my swing loaded before the pitch arrives." Cozart is hitting .328 and already has four home runs after hitting just .221 last year.
Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) surely isn't as good as his 2015 start suggests, but fantasy owners can't simply ignore the gains he's made in the early going. Still, while he's going well at FantasyScore, you should consider him a cheap sleeper at shortstop while hitting in a potent Cincy lineup. He's back in the eight spot tonight against Chicago Cubs starter Jon Lester, which makes him a little less attractive.

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the starting lineup Friday, April 24. C Brayan Pena continues to start behind the plate, and he's hitting seventh in the batting order against Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester.
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) came in for a pinch hit in Tuesday's game, so he's unlikely to land on the DL, but it's unknown when he'll return to the starting lineup. Avoid him for now on FantasyScore. Pena ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a switch hitter that fares much better against right-handed pitchers. He hit just .184 (14-for-76) against southpaws in 2014. Look to avoid him in daily games tonight.

Fantasy Tip: Leake ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA and 1.11 WHIP while fanning 13 in 20 2/3 innings in 2015. The Cubs lineup has more upside and pop than in recent years, though, and Leake is more of a low-end starting pitching option at FantasyScore tomorrow night.

Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey was physically fine in his second start against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 23, but manager Bryan Price said Bailey needs to build his endurance up. Bailey allowed seven hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) looked much better in his second start of the year, albeit against an injury-depleted Brewers lineup Thursday. It's still encouraging progress, though. However, you'd be smart to continue avoiding him at FantasyScore until he's up to speed.
