NCAA | Matt Purke to see Dr. James Andrews

Updating a previous report, Texas Christian University SP Matt Purke (shoulder) is out indefinitely with soreness in his throwing shoulder, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Stefan Stevenson reports. Purke will fly to Birmingham, Ala., to visit Dr. James Andrews Wednesday, April 20.

NCAA | Matt Purke struggling with velocity

Texas Christian University SP Matt Purke, who is widely viewed as one of the top three draft prospects, is struggling with his velocity, Baseball America's Aaron Fitt reports. Purke, who usually tops out around 96 mph, has been throwing his fastball around 84-86 mph. A scout commented in the third inning of his last start that Purke's arm slot dropped noticeably, and his stuff flattened out.

Baseball America's Aaron Fitt reports Louisiana State University SP Anthony Ranaudo (elbow) will miss a start Friday, Feb. 26, due to elbow discomfort. Ranaudo is potentially a high draft pick in this year's draft.

NCAA | Wallace a finalist for Golden Spikes Award

The Associated Press reports Arizona State University 3B Brett Wallace has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the nation's best amateur player. He was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year for the second straight season. He led the conference with a .414 batting average, 94 hits, 83 runs, 21 home runs, 81 RBIs and 173 total bases.

NCAA | Posey a finalist for Golden Spikes Award

The Associated Press reports Florida State University C Buster Posey has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the nation's best amateur player. He led the NCAA with a .472 batting average. He also led Florida State in saves this season with six.

The Associated Press reports University of San Diego P Brian Matusz has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the nation's best amateur player. He led the NCAA in strikeouts this season with 141 and had 12 victories. He was selected West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year. He finished the season as the career leader at San Diego in strikeouts with 396.

The Associated Press reports University of Missouri P Aaron Crow has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the nation's best amateur player. Crow set a Missouri record with 13 wins, which was the most in the nation this season. He also had a streak of 43 consecutive scoreless innings during the season.

NCAA | Beckham a finalist for Golden Spikes Award

The Associated Press reports University of Georgia SS Gordon Beckham has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the nation's best amateur player. He set the single-season home run record at Georgia with 24, and was voted the South Eastern Conference Player of the Year. He led the conference in home runs and ranked second in batting average with a .398 average.
