Fantasy Tip: As discussed in previous tips, Junior Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will see the majority of starts in the meantime, and he holds fleeting value in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. Lake is also a fine low-priced flier for FantasyScore players. However, the most significant beneficiary could be Javier Baez. Baez will fine-tune his craft at third base with the potential for a recall to the Cubs. Kris Bryant ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) would then move to the outfield. Continue to check back for updates.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is hitting .325 with seven home runs, six doubles and 26 RBI in his first 32 games with Iowa, and he is currently riding a five-game hitting streak with .351 batting average with four homers over his last 10 games. With Jorge Soler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) injured, theoretically, Baez could be recalled to Chicago to man the hot corner with Kris Bryant ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) moving to the outfield. Don't rule out a speculative Baez add in deep mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: The suspense didn't last long, but the length of Soler's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) absence should be revealed soon, too. In the short term, expect Junior Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) to start in his place. Javier Baez, though, could be an option for a recall, too. It would take a few position shifts in the field to make it work, but Baez has seven home runs and 26 with a .947 OPS over 32 minor league games this season. Continue to check back for updates.

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler (ankle) has left the team and returned to Chicago to have his ankle evaluated by the team's medical staff. An announcement on whether he will require a stint on the disabled list is expected to be made before the game Wednesday, June 3.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will want to check back for an update on the severity of Soler's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) injury and an expected timetable for his return. It is likely Junior Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) receives the majority of at-bats for the duration of Soler's absence. However, Javier Baez is scorching hot in the minors (17 runs, seven home runs, 26 RBI, six stolen bases and a .325/.397/.550 slash line), and with a recall and a few defensive position shifts, Baez could enter the picture and see a few at-bats, too.

Fantasy Tip: Montero ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) should return to the lineup in the next game or two. Ross ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) usually starts when Jon Lester pitches but should not be an option on FantasyScore since he is hitting only .190.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is still considered day-to-day because of his injury. Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is coming off a very good performance in his last start but has at least one hit in only three of his last eight games. Owners may want to look for other options to use on FantasyScore.

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez is playing some third base in the minor leagues, and it could suggest that the Cubs are considering bringing him up soon. Baez has been blocked at the major league level at shortstop and second base by SS Starlin Castro and 2B Addison Russell. Baez is hitting .325 with seven home runs, six doubles and 26 RBI in his first 32 games with Class AAA Iowa, and he's riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .351 with four homers in 10 games.
Fantasy Tip: Baez hit only .169 (36-for-213) with 95 strikeouts in his first taste of the bigs in 2014, and he's struggled with making contact in the minors. He's cut down on his whiffs drastically on the farm this year, though, which could signal that he's ready for the majors this time around. He's worth stashing now in all formats if you have the room.

Fantasy Tip: Check back later for more updates on Soler's injury. If he's forced to miss extended time, Junior Lake ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) would benefit the most from increased playing time. Lake has plenty of home run potential, but his contact profile is lacking, creating too many swings and misses and strikeouts. Tonight against Brad Hand with Soler out, Lake could be an excellent profit play, though.

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is starting in left field and hitting second in the batting order against Miami Marlins SP Brad Hand Tuesday, June 2. SS Jonathan Herrera receives the start at third base and is hitting ninth. OF Chris Coghlan is out of the lineup against a lefty.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) is a very strong FantasyScore option against the soft-tossing lefty Hand, even though the rookie is hitting .227 (5-for-22) with one home run against southpaws this year. Herrera ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) should be ignored.
Tue, 02 Jun 2015 13:13:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Russell ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has four homers and 15 RBI while hitting .254 in his rookie season, but he gets lost in the fantasy shuffle often times while hitting ninth in Chicago. A temporary move up in the lineup makes him more attractive to use on FantasyScore tonight. If there was ever a day to pick Russell, it'd be tonight against Hand.
Tue, 02 Jun 2015 13:10:45 -0700
Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero is not in the starting lineup against a left-handed pitcher Tuesday, June 2. C David Ross is starting and hitting seventh in the batting order against Miami Marlins SP Brad Hand.
Fantasy Tip: Ross ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should never really be heavily considered a nice sleeper play on FantasyScore, as he's used for his defense and not his bat. However, facing the soft-tossing Hand could set Ross up to surprise for the very bold owners.
Tue, 02 Jun 2015 13:05:18 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has just seven hits in 31 at-bats (.226) this year, and even though he has no home runs, his power potential is intriguing for fantasy owners when he's playing. And against the soft-tossing lefty Hand, Lake could easily become a very profitable sleeper pick while hitting in the middle of the Cubbies order.
Tue, 02 Jun 2015 09:03:01 -0700
Fantasy Tip: There is some thought the team could move him to third base, install Kris Bryant in left field, which would open up shortstop for Addison Russell and second base for Javier Baez. Castro really appears to be regressing in the field and at the plate. He's still just 25, and his $4,000 (8.0% of cap) price tag isn't too prohibitive on FantasyScore. However, he needs to pick it up from his .265-4-25 state.
Mon, 01 Jun 2015 20:17:51 -0700
Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel posted a career-high 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings in a win against the Miami Marlins Monday, June 1. He allowed just one run on four hits with no walks while throwing 117 pitches, his most since 2009.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel lowered his ERA to 2.82, and he has been giving FantasyScore owners tremendous return on their investment of $7,200 (or 14.4% of cap).
Mon, 01 Jun 2015 12:13:48 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Castro ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has hit a road block over the past 27 games and sports a .211/.256/.266 slash line. More concerning, Castro has just four RBI over his last 16 games since moving to the cleanup spot, so moving down the order to where he had more success makes sense. It is a slight hit to his fantasy stock, but Castro wasn't succeeded in the four-hole, so it shouldn't necessarily be considered a bad thing. FantasyScore players should wait for Castro to catch fire again at the plate before starting him with confidence in contests.
