Cubs | Kris Bryant to be evaluated Friday

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 18:23:40 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of one to two days after suffering a mild ankle sprain against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28. The results of a precautionary MRI exam have not yet been revealed and he is scheduled to undergo another evaluation Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Joe Maddon said he will not speculate on how much time Bryant could miss overall until he has received more information from the club's medical staff. If he is out for an extended period, INFs Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella could wind up splitting time at the hot corner, with Baez having the greater amount of fantasy upside. Keep checking back for updates on Bryant's status.

Cubs | Two hits, two RBI for Ben Zobrist

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:33:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Ben Zobrist went 2-for-5 with two RBI Thursday, April 28, versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: With this performance, Zobrist now has 10 RBI to go with a .257 batting average thus far. It doesn't look spectacular, but if not for a 0-for-18 slump earlier this month, his overall stat line would look a lot better. The veteran utility man is capable of providing more consistency as the season rolls on.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta moves to 5-0

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:28:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta only went five innings in his start Thursday, April 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers, yielding one run on three hits and four walks, but he also struck out six, en route to improving to 5-0 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Not the sharpest of performances from the reigning NL Cy Young award winner, but Arrieta was decent enough here to pick up the victory. In the process, his ERA went up to an even 1.00, but owners won't have any complaints with that. Simply put, the 30-year-old seems to have picked up from where he left off during his historic 2015 campaign, and continues to be one of the best starters in all of fantasy. His owners should be loving it every time he toes the rubber.

Cubs | Kris Bryant headed for MRI exam

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:07:55 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) has a mild ankle sprain and will undergo an MRI exam Thursday, April 28, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Reiterating previous tips, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella project to spell Bryant at third base for the duration of his absence, which appears to be a given at this point. Check back for confirmation of the severity of Bryant's ankle sprain and his expected return timeline.

Cubs | Rolled ankle caused Kris Bryant's exit

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:36:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) rolled his ankle running the bases during the third inning of the game against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28, which is why he left the game. He was treated by the training staff.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant may miss a game or two, but the injury doesn't appear to be serious. Reiterating a previous tip, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella are candidates to spell Bryant at the hot corner if he misses time. Stay tuned for updates.

Cubs | Kris Bryant exits early vs. Brewers

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:18:08 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (undisclosed) left the game before the fifth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28, after he was hit by a pitch for the second time during the game.

Fantasy Tip: It was likely just a precautionary exit, but you'll want to stay tuned for updates on Bryant. Should Bryant miss time, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella project to split time at third base.

Cubs | Miguel Montero back in two weeks

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:05:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is expected to return from the disabled list in two weeks, according to manager Joe Maddon. Montero is dealing with lower back tightness, and his DL stint is retroactive to April 25, so he can return as soon as May 10. Montero was hitting .208 with one home run and six RBI in 13 games.

Fantasy Tip: Montero is off to a slow start, so you may need to drop him in some mixed leagues in favor of better options. But he still carries value in those deeper mixed and two-catcher setups as Chicago's primary backstop in a potent offense. David Ross should see the majority of starts, but he's a low-end option with no offensive upside.

Cubs | Willson Contreras not ready yet

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 09:16:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Willson Contreras, who is the team's top catcher prospect, isn't ready yet but could be called up in the second half.

Fantasy Tip: He's a name to watch in NL-only leagues for now. He's hitting .375 in 56 at-bats at Class AAA Iowa. He doesn't have a ton of pop, but he had a .333-8-75 line at Class AA last season. He's a stash in keeper leagues as well.

Cubs | Miguel Montero to DL

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 09:09:42 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, April 28, with C Tim Federowicz coming up to take his roster spot.

Fantasy Tip: David Ross will likely split catching duties with Federowicz, but neither have much fantasy appeal. Place Montero on your DL until he returns.

Cubs | Jorge Soler out of lineup

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 07:38:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler is out of the lineup Thursday, April 28, with 2B Tommy La Stella hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella is hitting .364 without a lot of damage. He's a low-end consideration against Taylor Jungmann without a ton of upside.

Cubs | Miguel Montero sitting

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 07:35:42 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is out of the lineup Thursday, April 28, with C David Ross hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Ross usually catches Jake Arrieta, so Montero could be back Friday. Ross isn't a potent enough bat to start against Taylor Jungmann.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to pitch Thursday

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 19:03:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta will start Thursday, April 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers after his start Wednesday, April 27, was postponed due to rain.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off of a no-hitter last time out, and he faces another ultra-favorable matchup here. The Brewers just 6-20 in their past 26 against the Cubs, and 1-8 in Taylor Jungmann's past nine starts, while going 0-9 in his past nine road outings. Arrieta and the Cubs should be in line for an easy victory.

MLB | Brewers-Cubs postponed

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 16:11:11 -0700

The game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been announced. SP Jake Arrieta had been scheduled to pitch for the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to immediately remove any players from this game that you may have had in your daily starting lineups.

Cubs | Miguel Montero available off the bench

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:08:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is available off the bench for the game against the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: Montero hasn't had a strong start with just seven runs, a home run, six RBI and a .208/.316/.333 slash line. He'll continue to give way to David Ross behind the plate a couple games a week, but Montero is currently a nice buy-low candidate in deep mixed, two-catcher and NL-only formats.

Brewers | Domingo Santana sitting vs. Cubs

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 13:52:46 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers OF Domingo Santana is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 27. OF Alex Presley is starting in right field and batting second against Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Santana hasn't exploded out of the gate, but he appears locked into the leadoff spot and has a respectable .260/.341/.425 slash line with nine runs, two home runs and nine RBI. Best of all, there is upside for more, especially in the power department. Presley cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format because of the daunting matchup against Arrieta Wednesday.
