Cubs | Jason Heyward reporting early

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 11:19:18 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward has reported to camp early to work with hitting coach John Mallee.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward is a tough outfielder to project in fantasy because he doesn't produce a lot in one category, but he has that tantalizing 27-homer season in 2012 in the back of owners' minds. He'll be a solid OF2 that could hit 15 homers and steal 25 bags.

Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA.

SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta avoids arbitration

Sat, 06 Feb 2016 08:06:07 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta has avoided arbitration Friday, Feb. 5, by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Cubs worth $10.7 million, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off a Cy Young winning season and should be the ace of the Cubs starting rotation this season. Arrieta likely will be selected in one of the early rounds of drafts this season and could be a No. 1 pitcher for a fantasy owner.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta arbitration hearing set

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 11:54:42 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta's arbitration hearing has been set for Feb. 9. The two sides are $5.5 million apart.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta set the bar extremely high for himself, and some regression from that historic second half should be expected. However, he's firmly in the SP1 range in fantasy.

Cubs | Javier Baez to be super-utility player?

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 14:54:33 -0800

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez played some center field in winter ball this offseason and felt very comfortable there. With all of the infield spots blocked, the Cubs would like Baez to move around on the diamond. He could see time as the fourth outfielder or win a job outright.

"He is one of the best baseball position players we have in the organization," said bench coach Dave Martinez. "We are going to try and play him at multiple positions and make it fun for him. He told us he is all for it and not worried in the least. On offense, we want him to be himself and let the ball get in there on him before he reacts."

Fantasy Tip: While Baez is unlikely to be a starter for Chicago, that doesn't mean he's useless for fantasy owners in 2016. All it would take is one injury to open up significant playing time, and he could be more attractive with more positional flexibility. Baez remains a worthwhile stash for his power in deeper leagues.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta hopes to be stronger

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:07:03 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta's offseason workout routines are becoming legendary, and he'll need it after blowing out his previous career high in innings of 156 2/3 by pitching almost 250 innings last season, including the playoffs. His fitness routine is heavy on Pilates and includes a lot of running. Arrieta ran out of gas late in the season, but the Cubs believe he's well-equipped to handle that kind of workload this time around.

The Cubs will be smart about his workload, but it's unclear how they'll back off him in spring training. Arrieta said his offseason throwing program has been about normal. "I've had more than a couple weeks now, working on my deliveries," Arrieta said. "Dry deliveries. That helps when I get the ball back in my hand -- like I never really stopped throwing. The goal for me is to increase arm strength."

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015 included a 1.77 ERA and 22 wins. It'll be extremely hard to match those numbers, but even if he doesn't match or surpass his award-winning season, the fact remains he's already established himself as a fantasy ace.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta files for arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 19:57:48 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta has filed for salary arbitration. He made $3.63 million last year and is seeking $13 million for the 2016 season, while the team has countered with a $7.5 million offer.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta won the 2015 National League Cy Young Award after leading the senior circuit in victories (22), complete games (four) and shutouts (three), while posting a 1.77 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 9.3 K/9. He should be one of the first starting pitchers drafted in all fantasy formats this spring.

Cubs | Chris Coghlan avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:02:06 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Chris Coghlan re-signed a one-year, $4.8 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Coghlan hit a career-high 16 home runs last season, and he caught the eye of skipper Joe Maddon, and the manager leaned on him in a utility role at second base and in the outfield. The Cubs are a deeper team heading into 2016, though, so playing time is a real concern for Coghlan's fantasy stock. Unless things change, he is likely best left to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Two Cubs avoid arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:34:43 -0800

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon and RP Travis Wood avoided arbitration by signing one-year deals Friday, Jan. 15. Rondon landed $4.2 million, and Wood tallied $6.17 million.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon had a breakout season, mostly as their closer, with 30 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He's a solid RP2. Wood turned into a shutdown reliever last season after allowing a .423 batting average after 46 pitches as a starter. He's an NL-only option for his 10.55 K/9.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta talks offseason plan

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 14:58:08 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta began throwing earlier this month and said his goal is to increase his arm strength over the next four to five weeks to be ready for the beginning of spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta is coming off a Cy Young campaign and deserves fantasy ace status heading into the 2016 season. Dating back to the beginning of 2015, Arrieta has a 2.08 ERA, a 2.13 FIP, a 0.92 WHIP and a 9.4 K/9, and he is worth targeting as one of the first pitchers off the board in drafts this spring.

Cubs | Javier Baez playing center field

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 17:26:35 -0800

Chicago Cubs INF Javier Baez is playing center field for the first time in a Puerto Rican winter league game Friday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Baez once again finds himself without a regular position due to the team's acquisition of INF/OF Ben Zobrist, so he is looking to increase his versatility in order to receive more at-bats. His fantasy value will remain limited as long as he stays with the Cubs and will skyrocket if he ends up with a club that can guarantee him regular playing time.

Cubs | Jason Heyward to play CF

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 09:14:07 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward will play center field next year unless the Cubs move OF Jorge Soler in a trade. Heyward is slated to bat near the top of the lineup with 2B Ben Zobrist.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward is a real complete player in real life and for his fantasy owners, and joining the Cubbies should make him even more appealing in fantasy drafts. Heyward's contact, on-base and speed skills will play well in the Chicago lineup and will also enhance the value of those hitting around him -- like Kris Bryant, Zobrist and Anthony Rizzo.

Cubs | Jason Heyward took less to join Chicago

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 13:19:59 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward received $200 million offers from the Washington Nationals and another team, believed to be the St. Louis Cardinals, but choose to sign for less with Chicago.

Fantasy Tip: Heyward projects to hit in front of Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, which was a lineup spot that helped Dexter Fowler cross home plate 102 times last season. Heyward has 20-20 upside, and he is coming off a career-best 2.93 batting average. His five-category contribution will warrant an early middle round selection in redraft leagues.
