Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta failed to record a quality start for just the second time in 10 outings this season but he should continue to be started with confidence in all fantasy formats. His next start will come against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, May 31.
Wed, 25 May 2016 18:17:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bryant has 10 home runs and 35 RBI through 44 games this season and should continue to be viewed as one of the top third basemen in all fantasy formats.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella has a .308-2-7 line on the season and is a low-end consideration against Carlos Martinez.

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel allowed one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, May 24, to pick up his sixth win of the season. He struck out four batters and walked three during the game.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his nine starts this season and currently has a 2.17 ERA. He is scheduled to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in his next start and should be a starting option in all leagues.
Tue, 24 May 2016 20:14:14 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Soler has been producing the plate over the last week with seven hits, two home runs and four RBI over the last seven games. Soler probably is not a great option in most leagues but should be a starting candidate in some daily fantasy leagues.

Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 2-for-27 on the team's road trip following a 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, May 23. Against left-handed pitchers this season, Rizzo is batting .156 with a .296 on-base percentage. Rizzo's batting average on balls in play is .218, but for the season he is hitting .239 with 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in.
Fantasy Tip: These numbers are all over the place, and they demonstrate how maddening Rizzo can be when it comes to hot and cold streaks. However, Rizzo still merits play in DFS, weekly and annual leagues because of his sheer power. Rizzo has 11 home runs, and you can't ignore those numbers. He is on pace for more than 100 walks and less than 100 strikeouts, which no Cub has done since 1984 (Gary Matthews). Rizzo puts the ball in play, and his bat can be potent.

Fantasy Tip: The 39-year-old veteran is actually having a decent season at the plate, hitting .250 with three home runs and 12 RBI. However, he has little offensive upside hitting at the bottom of the order and remains a low-end daily backstop.
Tue, 24 May 2016 12:14:35 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Because he's hitting only .225 with one home run and 14 RBI, it's probably wise to let Heyward ease his way back in and keep him on your bench for a game or two. In daily formats, he'll be a contrarian play against Wacha and the Red Birds.
Tue, 24 May 2016 00:33:15 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Zobrist is wielding a strong bat and an ability to get on base with ease. That's a solid combination and it makes Zobrist a player with increased fantasy value. Since he has demonstrated an ability to reach base in nearly 30 straight games, it stands to reason his overall numbers will be higher.

Fantasy Tip: Whatever the case, Heyward is not in the lineup again on Monday, though it sounds like he's pretty close to returning. While he remains out, the Cubs have been inventive with how they replace him in right field, even using the likes of Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist. As a result, Javier Baez benefits while Heyward remains sidelined, and is a pretty good value play for daily leagues when he's in the lineup.

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward (ribs) remains out of the starting lineup Monday, May 23. 3B Kris Bryant moves to right field and is hitting second, while 2B/OF Javier Baez is at the hot corner and is batting seventh against St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright.
Fantasy Tip: Heyward could wind up missing the entire series to begin the week, so you're better off not risking it and benching in weekly leagues. A DL trip remains possible. Jorge Soler and Javier Baez benefit the most as long as Heyward is out. Both have nice power-speed combinations, although Soler has mostly disappointed this year.
Sun, 22 May 2016 20:34:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bumgarner has allowed two runs or less in seven straight starts, and he is locked in as a fantasy ace.
Sun, 22 May 2016 20:30:12 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Matt Szczur makes for an interesting sleeper in daily formats while Heyward is sidelined.
Sun, 22 May 2016 14:17:21 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Montero and Ross have been largely platooning, so this move should come as no surprise to Cubs fans. Ross generally has little fantasy value even though he has shown he can hit home runs off Bumgarner (one in six at-bats).
Sun, 22 May 2016 14:11:18 -0700
Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward (ribs) is out of the starting lineup Sunday, May 22, against the San Francisco Giants. OF Matt Szczur will bat seventh and play right field against Giants SP Madison Bumgarner.
Fantasy Tip: As mentioned in previous tips, Heyward could be out anywhere from three to five days following his rib injury on Saturday. Szczur, himself just back from the DL due to hamstring issues, has six hits in his last 15 at-bats and makes a decent pickup in daily contests.
