Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: This would be a shocking move, as Wood just landed with Los Angeles Thursday, July 30. Continue to check back for updates, but regardless of whether Wood stays with the Dodgers or is dealt to the Cubs, it should be viewed as an upgrade on starting for the Braves.

Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco is drawing interest from the Chicago Cubs as they look to upgrade their starting pitching at the trade deadline. Carrasco has 140 strikeouts in 127 1/3 innings this year and is living up to his prospect hype. He's also signed through 2018 with two team options for 2019 and 2020, which makes him more attractive.
Fantasy Tip: Now that the Cubs have traded for Dan Haren, it seems unlikely that they'd also go after Carrasco ($7,200, 14.4% of cap), who is coveted by other teams, too. Carrasco could see his fantasy value boosted if he is traded to a contender. Stay tuned.

Fantasy Tip: Haren ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) should slide into Chicago's rotation as the No. 5 starter after this move. The veteran righty isn't striking out many batters (6.1 K/9), but he was serviceable for the Fish with a 3.42 ERA in 21 starts (129 innings), and he can be a dependable matchup play on FantasyScore at a cheap price, especially now that he'll have a better offense backing him.

Fantasy Tip: Ross ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) would be leaving a very pitching-friendly environment at Petco Park for the friendly confines of Wrigley. A potential move to Chicago could be seen to slightly negatively affect his fantasy value, but he'd also be pitching for a better offensive squad.

Fantasy Tip: Montero ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) was hitting .230, with 10 home runs, 19 runs scored and 32 RBI before sustaining an injury. FantasyScore owners will need to see some positive results upon his eventual return before investing.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:59:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Montero ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is extremely optimistic, but it doesn't mean the Cubs will rush him off the disabled list. There also are some potential playing time concerns for Montero, as Kyle Schwarber ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) has been tearing the cover off the ball whenever given an opportunity. This is a situation to monitor, but Montero's seasonal value is on the decline.

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler has a .417 batting average (5-for-12) with three doubles and a home run over his career against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson. Nelson is starting against Chicago Thursday, July 30.
Fantasy Tip: Past success isn't a direct indicator of future success, especially with such a small sample size. However, Soler ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has been showing signs of busting out, and he won't break the bank at FantasyScore. He is worth considering if his price fits your lineup assembly strategy.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:24:20 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It will be Schwarber's ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) third appearance and second start in the outfield this season, and while adding the eligibility won't be a fantasy difference maker, proving he can handle the position will help him obtain at-bats. His bat is tough to keep out of the lineup at this point, as he owns a .357/.446/.589 slash line over 65 plate appearances. He is a high-end catcher option in all fantasy formats, including FantasyScore.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:14:33 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is due for a night off, and he hasn't been at his best in July with a .176/.276/.385 slash line. Coghlan ($3,000, 6.0% of cap), meanwhile, has picked up his play over the past 50 games (38 starts) and boasts a .291/.395/.444 slash line with 20 runs, four home runs, 13 RBI and five stolen bases. He is a low-priced flier for FantasyScore contests Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Castro's ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) Jekyll and Hyde act has been a hindrance to his value for fantasy owners and the Cubs. Still, the 25-year-old shortstop already has 937 hits at the major league level and owns a .279 career batting average. He'll never significantly tip the scales in the speed and power columns, but it would be foolish to write off Castro this early in his career. A change of scenery might help his 2015 value, too.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed two runs, five hits and a walk over eight innings Wednesday, July 29, against the Colorado Rockies. He also came within one of his career best by striking out 14 Rockies in the victory.
Fantasy Tip: After a dismal 4-8 start, Lester ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) has won back-to-back decisions for the first time since mid-May, and he has lasted at least seven innings in each of his six July starts. He is 2-2 in the month with a 1.66 ERA while striking out 50 batters over 43 1/3 innings. He's back, FantasyScore owners, so take advantage.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 14:46:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Montero ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) isn't worth stashing in the majority of formats, as it is unknown how playing time will be divided when he returns. His timetable is still unknown, too. It is a situation to monitor, and Kyle Schwarber ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) will likely receive the biggest fantasy value hit when Montero rejoins the team.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 12:25:25 -0700
Chicago Cubs SP Clayton Richard is expected to be called up from Class AAA Iowa to become the team's fifth starting pitcher after he tossed seven scoreless innings and gave up three hits for Iowa Tuesday, July 28.
Fantasy Tip: Richard allowed five earned runs in his two starts (12 innings) for the Cubs this year, and his stay in the rotation could be very short if Chicago trades for another starting arm this week. Richard should only be added in deep NL-only leagues, and he'll be a weak play on FantasyScore.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 09:43:51 -0700
Fantasy Tip: That's far from a guarantee that Castro ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) won't be traded away. However, with a .163 average (14-for-86) in July and a .237 average on the season, not many contending teams are likely looking to acquire the shortstop. With Castro's bat dormant right now, he's a weaker shortstop play on FantasyScore.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 08:50:01 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cogs ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has a meager .242-3-6 line this month, but he has a good matchup today in a prime spot in the order. He's worth considering for a speculative flyer on FantasyScore.
