Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Uggla ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has just 18 plate appearances in May, and against Jon Lester, Uggla should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation source of cap relief. He does have power potential, though.
Wed, 27 May 2015 13:31:29 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ross ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has settled in as a leader in the clubhouse and catching Jon Lester, but Ross' fantasy value is limited, at best. With Max Scherzer starting against the Cubs Wednesday, Ross is a low-end option in all fantasy formats, and FantasyScore players should aim higher.

Fantasy Tip: Coghlan ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has picked up his play of late, and is riding a respectable 7-for-23 stretch with four runs, three home runs, four RBI and a .304/.385/.739 slash line. While typically setting the table for a potent lineup is a huge fantasy boost, facing Max Scherzer mitigates it Wednesday. Coghlan should be viewed as a low-price flier with upside for FantasyScore contests Wednesday. His value would skyrocket, especially in the run department, if he does stick in the leadoff spot, though.

Fantasy Tip: Fowler ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has caught fire over the past few weeks as he has 19 runs, five home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases with a .370 on-base percentage through his past 18 games. His run total will suffer for the duration of his tenure in the cleanup spot, but he will see more RBI opportunities, especially hitting behind Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has been struggling to take off at the plate, and he is currently leading the National League in strikeouts (62). However, Soler still has a respectable .273 batting average and .333 on-base percentage. Warmer weather could help heat up his bat, so seasonal owners will want to remain patient. Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is nothing more than a low-priced flier for FantasyScore contests Wednesday, especially facing Max Scherzer.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) has turned things around after an April that had his fantasy owners pretty worried. In the long run, the southpaw should be just fine. At FantasyScore today, though, paying up for Lester against a Nationals squad that has been hot the past month may be a mistake.

Chicago Cubs SS Javier Baez is batting .321 through 23 games in May with Class AAA Iowa, but the organization is being patient with the prospect. However, senior vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod noted there are daily conversations about Baez joining the Cubs, and that there is potential Baez may audition in the outfield.
Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Baez is all deep mixed and NL-only formats, as he has huge power potential for a middle infielder. However, there currently isn't an everyday job for him, unless he -- or another young infielder -- moves to the outfield. Expect Baez to force the issue with his bat at some point, and he could even be the big fish in a trade. Continue to check back for updates and monitor the young sluggers progress with Iowa.

Fantasy Tip: The fourth overall selection in the 2014 amateur draft, Schwarber is currently hitting .305 with a 1.035 OPS through 41 games at Class AA Tennessee. He has 25 runs, 10 home runs and 26 RBI, too. The caveat here is Schwarber holds catcher eligibility, and could help down the stretch in deep formats. At this point, he is just a name to take note of and monitor in all one-year leagues. Still, dynasty/keeper owners might have a speculative grab on their hands sooner than later, especially those rebuilding.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has been a bit inconsistent over his last few starts but has one run or fewer in three of his last four starts. Hendricks is scheduled to make his next start against the Miami Marlins and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore to consider.
Tue, 26 May 2015 14:57:56 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Baez is hitting .311 (28-for-90) with five home runs and 17 RBI at Class AAA Iowa this year after a late start. He could be recalled later this summer or fall, depending on how playing time shakes out with Addison Russell at the major league level. Continue stashing Baez for now in deep mixed and NL-only leagues.
Tue, 26 May 2015 13:45:21 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) is starting to live up to the rookie hype after a slow start to his major league career. However, he may struggle to return a profit today against Washington Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann, who is holding righty hitters to a slash line of .224/.259/.252 in 2015.
Mon, 25 May 2015 08:20:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Montero ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) should return to the lineup in the near future. Ross ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is only hitting .182 this season and has not recorded an RBI since April 24, so owners on FantasyScore probably should avoid using him.
Sun, 24 May 2015 12:26:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Russell ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is receiving the day off and should be removed from all fantasy lineups. Herrera ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) is not much more than a low-priced flier in FantasyScore.
Sun, 24 May 2015 05:57:28 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Strop hasn't allowed a run in three and two-third innings over his last four appearances. Hector Rondon has blown two of his last three save opportunities, and NL-only owners should be adding Strop just in case the Cubs make a change in the ninth inning.
Sat, 23 May 2015 22:39:44 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Rizzo ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) is hitting .300 in his last 10 at-bats after a mini-slump of 1-for-13 in his prior four games. Rizzo is finding his stroke against the Diamondbacks and should be a fine play in FantasyScore Sunday, May 24.
