Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant says that he is ready to start the 2015 season in the major leagues, but team president Theo Epstein said the team is still evaluating the youngster, and he might need more seasoning in the minors before he makes his major league debut. Bryant currently leads all of baseball with nine home runs this spring and his batting .406 with 15 RBI. "I've never put a guy on an opening day roster who hadn't played in the big leagues previously. In 13 years, I've never done it," Epstein said. The Cubs can prevent Bryant from becoming a free agent until 2021 if he doesn't make his debut until at least mid-April.
Fantasy Tip: It seems likely that Bryant will start 2015 in the minors, but it surely won't be long before he'll make his major league debut. He belong on all fantasy rosters, and because of his excellent spring, he'll surely be way overpriced. Bryant's lack of consistent contact is a red flag, but his overwhelming power stroke is worth overpaying for, especially in keeper leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant's power potential is through the roof, but occasional rough patches are to be expected from any young player. Don't let a bad game stop you from taking Bryant in the middle rounds of your fantasy draft.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will make another minor league start next week and should approach 75 to 80 pitches. He is still on course to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Fantasy Tip: While it is difficult to bench a front-of-the-rotation starter, Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) will likely on a pitch count and faces a solid offensive Cardinals team in his first start. It could be a wise move to give him a start to prove his health, especially in formats with an innings cap. Lester should still be considered a low-end fantasy ace and worth targeting in the early middle rounds.

Fantasy Tip: Castro ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has 28 plate appearances this spring and is coming off a solid bounce back season. Castro is a viable mid-round shortstop target, however he doesn't excel in any category and his power-speed combo isn't enticing, either. Castro has 13 swipes over the past two seasons and has never topped 15 home runs in a season. Still, at 25, he is just entering his prime and already has 3186 plate appearances and 846 hits in his career. There could be another level of production in an improved lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is expected to spend the first nine days of the regular season with Triple-A Iowa, buying the organization an extra year of service time. He is still worth a middle-round draft pick in all fantasy formats because of his power potential. He could be dinging homers off of the gaudy new scoreboard in left field at Wrigley Field all summer.

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is likely to play in the outfield in the next couple of days. Manager Joe Maddon indicated he's going to try to get hm into the game as an outfielder in that time frame. Bryant made his third error playing third base this spring Tuesday, March 24. The Cubs claim he's still their third baseman of the future.
Fantasy Tip: The Cubs have an embarrassment of young infield talent, and an outfield move for Bryant is something that has been speculated. He'll be third base eligible this year and gaining outfield eligibility would be a nice bonus. He's a thoroughly hyped power-hitting prospect who is worth drafting in all leagues, but he'll likely require an early-round pick.

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez said Tuesday, March 24, he's been told he'll be on the opening day roster. A team official confirmed that Baez was told he'll make the team as the second baseman. Baez is 5-for-39 with 14 strikeouts this spring.
Fantasy Tip: Baez's huge strikeout rate is likely to make him a batting average liability, but he has monster power. His middle infield eligibility could lead drafters to reach on his potential, but it's best not to overdraft him given the risk of him being overwhelmed by big league pitching. His upside does make him worth a late-round pick if he falls, though.

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester's (arm) final two spring starts will be in controlled minor league games, according to manager Joe Maddon. "We just want to be able to control what he's doing," Maddon said. "I'm not concerned who he pitches against. He just needs somebody standing up there so he gets the requisite number of pitches thrown. If he says he feels good I feel good." Lester will also be on a 60-pitch limit in his start Thursday, March 26, and an approximately 80-pitch limit for the following start, according to Maddon and pitching coach Chris Bosio.
Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Lester's progress leading into opening day. Reiterating previous tips, it might not be an ideal spot to utilize Lester in his first start with a projected pitch count and potentially cold weather. This is particularly true for leagues which have a strict innings cap and daily contests.

Fantasy Tip: A pitch count isn't ideal for fantasy value, as there is potential Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) could be pulled early, especially if it is a cold night. It isn't an ideal matchup against the Cardinals, either. It could be wise to bench Lester in leagues with a year-long innings cap, too. There is also still potential his "dead arm" lingers, so continue to check back for updates leading up to opening day.
Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:11:10 -0700
Fantasy Tip: This is called taking it easy on Lester, who is still targeted for Opening Day. Any worries of a "dead arm" may be overdone, but the Cubs are not taking any chances. Lester is a solid selection in the early and middle rounds of NL and mixed leagues.
Tue, 24 Mar 2015 11:12:19 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Castro's status for the opener is not in danger right now. At $5,000 (10% of your cap), he's a midrange shortstop on FantasyScore.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) said he still has a long way to go, but he still plans to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lester added he is still scheduled to pitch Thursday, March 26.
Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) projects as a low-end fantasy ace in mixed leagues. While his 2014 numbers are likely due to regress, the relocation to the National League should help maintain his uptick in strikeouts from last season and mitigate that risk. He'll be a high-end starting pitcher option in FantasyScore contests, especially in favorable matchups. Continue to check back for updates as the season nears, though, as dead arm issues this early in the season are concerning.
Sun, 22 Mar 2015 08:40:11 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Castro appears to be dealing with a minor injury and should play again next week. He is coming off a solid 2014 season and could be an option in the middle rounds of drafts.

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell hit his first home run of the spring Saturday, March 22. Through 22 at-bats, Russell has five runs, one home run, four RBI, one stolen base and a .409/.458/.682 slash line.
Fantasy Tip: Russell is widely considered a top-five prospect in baseball, but he is currently blocked at the major league level and expected to begin the season in the minors. He does have just 13 plate appearances above Class AA, after all. Russell is unlikely to have a significant impact in 2015, but he would be worth a speculative add if there is news he may be recalled to Chicago, but it is far from guaranteed he'll appear in the majors this year. He should be on your radar in all keeper/dynasty formats, if he isn't owned already.
Sat, 21 Mar 2015 18:44:50 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bryant will likely begin the season in the minors, but he is still worth drafting in all fantasy formats. Whenever he does join the Cubs, he will immediately deserve consideration at FantasyScore.
