Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

The Chicago Cubs acquired RP Aroldis Chapman from the New York Yankees Monday, July 25, according to sources. The Cubs sent SS Gleyber Torres, OF Billy McKinney, RP Adam Warren and possibly another player. Torres is the centerpiece of the deal and was hitting .275 with nine home runs in 94 games for Class A Myrtle Beach.
Fantasy Tip: Chapman is an elite closer that just got even more attractive, as he'll now be closing games for one of the best clubs in all of baseball. Hector Rondon's value takes a big hit, as he's likely the setup man now to Chapman. In New York, Andrew Miller would see a sizeable boost if he's not traded, as he would likely take over closing duties for Chapman. If Miller also leaves town before the deadline, Dellin Betances figures to be next in line. Both relievers are already must-owns in all leagues for their stellar relief ratios.

Fantasy Tip: Schwarber will likely lose catcher eligibility next season, and he'll be an upper-middle outfielder in fantasy. If he regains catcher eligibility next season, he would rise to the pinnacle of the position.

New York Yankees RP Aroldis Chapman is part of a proposed deal with the Chicago Cubs for SS Gleyber Torres, among others, according to sources. Torres was scratched from his game in the minors Sunday, July 24, and a deal is possible Monday, July 25.
Fantasy Tip: Chapman's K-rate is down a bit, but it's still great at 12.64 per nine innings. On the plus side, his control has been better with only eight walks in 31 1/3 innings, which has led to a miniscule 0.89 WHIP. A return to the National League would only benefit him more. It's hard to see him serving in a setup role, and Hector Rondon would lose a lot of fantasy luster. As for the Yankees, Dellin Betances has a leg up on Andrew Miller because Betances is right-handed. Both relievers remain attractive in all formats, but Betances could see a big boost.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed four runs on four hits while walking five and striking out seven over four innings in a no-decision against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, July 24, and he has 11 walks in his last three starts.
Fantasy Tip: Lester has now struggled in three of his last four starts. Stick with him in season-long formats, but he is too risky to use in daily games right now.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan looked sharp in his debut, but he won't be much of a factor in fantasy leagues as a setup man.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check on a possible timetable for Russell in the next day or two. He has recorded 11 home runs and 56 RBI this season and is a fine starting candidate for owners when he is healthy.
Sun, 24 Jul 2016 12:33:28 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Nathan likely will be used as a setup man for the time being and likely will not receive many save opportunities. He should have some value in NL-only leagues but can be avoided in most other leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Fowler returned from the disabled list with a bang Friday, July 22, and he projects to see the odd game off given the depth Chicago boasts. He's a must-own outfielder in all settings because of his five-category potential. Contreras also should be owned in all leagues given his eligibility at catcher and respectable .278/.376/.491 slash line through 125 plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella is nothing more than a cavernous mixed and NL-only option, but he's packed punch when given an opportunity with a .273/.363/.434 slash line. He's a nice target in daily contests Sunday, albeit probably a popular one. Baez is worth owning in all seasonal leagues, and he is receiving enough playing time to provide five-category production as a low-end starter.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan will likely work in the later innings, but save chances probably aren't in his future. He can be ignored in a majority of fantasy formats.

Fantasy Tip: Contreras has cooled a bit with a .262-2-6 line this month, but he's in a peak spot in the lineup to contribute against Zach Davies.

Chicago Cubs OF Dexter Fowler (hamstring) returned from a 27-game absence and went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI, two runs scored and a walk in a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Friday, July 22.
Fantasy Tip: Talk about shaking off the rust. Fowler picked up where he left off and looks safe to deploy going forward.

Chicago Cubs OF Dexter Fowler (hamstring) is back off the disabled list and is hitting leadoff against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson Friday, July 22. As a result, 2B/OF Javier Baez will start on the bench.
Fantasy Tip: Fowler hasn't played in a major league game in over a month, so it's understandable to be hesitant to throw him back into starting lineups immediately. But keep in mind he's been great for fantasy owners with his .290/.398/.483 slash line, seven homers, 41 runs, 28 RBI and six steals. Baez will bounce around as a utility player, but solid playing time may be harder to come by now.

Chicago Cubs OF Dexter Fowler (hamstring) is being activated from the disabled list Friday, July 22, according to a source. Fowler has been out of the lineup since he was injured June 18. RP Spencer Patton and OF Albert Almora will be sent to Class AAA Iowa.
Fantasy Tip: Fowler may be a little rusty with some time off, so it's understandable if you're hesitant to throw him back into seasonal lineups immediately. But he's been a boon to fantasy owners with his .290/.398/.483 slash line and seven home runs, 41 runs, 28 RBI and six steals. Almora is a promising youngster who was the casualty of a stacked roster. He showed well, hitting .265 with two homers and nine RBI but has an uphill battle to climb for playing time moving forward. He should be kept in most dynasty leagues, however.

Chicago Cubs RP Mike Montgomery will pitch out of the bullpen for the Cubs. He's holding left-handed hitters to a .164 average this year and has a nice 2.34 ERA in 32 games (30 relief outings for the Seattle Mariners). Montgomery is a former first-round pick of the Kansas City Royals, and manager Joe Maddon described him as a "big left-hander with a very good arm."
Fantasy Tip: The Cubs have been lacking a solid lefty reliever in their bullpen this year, so Montgomery is a nice fit. He had a nice run in Seattle's rotation last year, but he's unlikely to make an impact there with the Cubs. For that reason his fantasy value is very limited aside from the deepest of leagues for his nice ratios.
