Cubs | John Lackey to start Sunday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:29:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey will start against the Atlanta Braves Sunday, May 1. He was originally scheduled to pitch Saturday, April 30, but the game was rained out.

Fantasy Tip: Lackey is 3-1 with a 4.97 ERA through four starts and has struck out 27 batters in 25 1/3 innings. He has a very favorable matchup against the Braves, who have scored the fewest runs in the National League and have the second-worst batting average in the senior circuit. Lackey will be followed in the rotation by SPs Jason Hammel, Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.

Cubs | Matt Szczur hits grand slam Friday

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 17:58:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Matt Szczur hit a grand slam against Atlanta Braves RP Chris Withrow Friday, April 29. It was the first slam of his career.

Fantasy Tip: Szczur is batting .296 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 27 at-bats this season and is worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy games on days when he is in the starting lineup.

Cubs | Jon Lester fans 10 Friday

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 17:52:42 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings in a no-decision against the Atlanta Braves Friday, April 29, with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Lester has posted a 1.83 ERA through his first five starts this year and has fanned 33 batters over 34 1/3 innings. He will make his next scheduled start against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, May 4, and should be viewed as an elite starting pitching option in all fantasy formats.

Cubs | Kris Bryant unlikely for Saturday

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 15:12:13 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kris Bryant (ankle) is feeling better Friday, April 29, but he is still unlikely to play against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, April 30, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant made an appearance in the on-deck circle as a potential pinch hitter during the game Friday, so he clearly isn't too hampered by the ankle injury. Still, the Cubs and fantasy owners want Bryant healthy and not rushed back. Reiterating previous tips, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella will handle the hot corner with Bryant out. Stay tuned for updates.

Cubs | Kris Bryant expected to avoid DL

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 08:52:23 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) is expected to avoid the disabled list after suffering a mild ankle sprain Thursday, April 28. Bryant is not in the starting lineup Friday, April 29, and he could be out for a few days.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is a top-tier fantasy third baseman. It looks like he avoided serious injury, but be prepared to be without him for at least several days. Javier Baez should've already been owned in the majority of leagues for his power-speed combo and positional eligibility, and Tommy La Stella could fill in occasionally at the hot corner in the meantime.

Cubs | Javier Baez in the lineup

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 08:34:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs INF Javier Baez is hitting sixth Friday, April 29, in place of 3B Kris Bryant (ankle). 2B Ben Zobrist is hitting third.

Fantasy Tip: Baez draws the start over streaking Tommy La Stella. Baez is hitting .308 with a homer in 26 at-bats this year and isn't a bad flyer against Aaron Blair in his second career start. Zobrist is hitting .308 with three RBI the last seven days. He's a decent midrange start today.

Cubs | Kris Bryant out Friday

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 08:04:22 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) will sit out Friday, April 29, but the Cubs aren't worried about his mild ankle sprain.

Fantasy Tip: Tommy La Stella is 5-for-8 (.625) with a homer the last seven days. He doesn't do a lot of damage, but he figures to see more at-bats in the short term. He could be a low-end daily flyer.

Cubs | Kris Bryant to be evaluated Friday

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 18:23:40 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of one to two days after suffering a mild ankle sprain against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28. The results of a precautionary MRI exam have not yet been revealed and he is scheduled to undergo another evaluation Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Joe Maddon said he will not speculate on how much time Bryant could miss overall until he has received more information from the club's medical staff. If he is out for an extended period, INFs Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella could wind up splitting time at the hot corner, with Baez having the greater amount of fantasy upside. Keep checking back for updates on Bryant's status.

Cubs | Two hits, two RBI for Ben Zobrist

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:33:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Ben Zobrist went 2-for-5 with two RBI Thursday, April 28, versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: With this performance, Zobrist now has 10 RBI to go with a .257 batting average thus far. It doesn't look spectacular, but if not for a 0-for-18 slump earlier this month, his overall stat line would look a lot better. The veteran utility man is capable of providing more consistency as the season rolls on.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta moves to 5-0

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:28:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta only went five innings in his start Thursday, April 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers, yielding one run on three hits and four walks, but he also struck out six, en route to improving to 5-0 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Not the sharpest of performances from the reigning NL Cy Young award winner, but Arrieta was decent enough here to pick up the victory. In the process, his ERA went up to an even 1.00, but owners won't have any complaints with that. Simply put, the 30-year-old seems to have picked up from where he left off during his historic 2015 campaign, and continues to be one of the best starters in all of fantasy. His owners should be loving it every time he toes the rubber.

Cubs | Kris Bryant headed for MRI exam

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 15:07:55 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) has a mild ankle sprain and will undergo an MRI exam Thursday, April 28, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Reiterating previous tips, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella project to spell Bryant at third base for the duration of his absence, which appears to be a given at this point. Check back for confirmation of the severity of Bryant's ankle sprain and his expected return timeline.

Cubs | Rolled ankle caused Kris Bryant's exit

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:36:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (ankle) rolled his ankle running the bases during the third inning of the game against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28, which is why he left the game. He was treated by the training staff.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant may miss a game or two, but the injury doesn't appear to be serious. Reiterating a previous tip, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella are candidates to spell Bryant at the hot corner if he misses time. Stay tuned for updates.

Cubs | Kris Bryant exits early vs. Brewers

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 13:18:08 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant (undisclosed) left the game before the fifth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 28, after he was hit by a pitch for the second time during the game.

Fantasy Tip: It was likely just a precautionary exit, but you'll want to stay tuned for updates on Bryant. Should Bryant miss time, Javier Baez and Tommy La Stella project to split time at third base.

Cubs | Miguel Montero back in two weeks

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:05:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is expected to return from the disabled list in two weeks, according to manager Joe Maddon. Montero is dealing with lower back tightness, and his DL stint is retroactive to April 25, so he can return as soon as May 10. Montero was hitting .208 with one home run and six RBI in 13 games.

Fantasy Tip: Montero is off to a slow start, so you may need to drop him in some mixed leagues in favor of better options. But he still carries value in those deeper mixed and two-catcher setups as Chicago's primary backstop in a potent offense. David Ross should see the majority of starts, but he's a low-end option with no offensive upside.

Cubs | Willson Contreras not ready yet

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 09:16:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Willson Contreras, who is the team's top catcher prospect, isn't ready yet but could be called up in the second half.

Fantasy Tip: He's a name to watch in NL-only leagues for now. He's hitting .375 in 56 at-bats at Class AAA Iowa. He doesn't have a ton of pop, but he had a .333-8-75 line at Class AA last season. He's a stash in keeper leagues as well.
