Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel will start against a familiar opponent Sunday, May 3, when the Cubs play the Milwaukee Brewers. Hammel is one of two active pitchers with a 5-0 record against the Brewers. San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner is the only pitcher, with at least five starts against Milwaukee, to have a better ERA than Hammel.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has 23 strikeouts through 25 and one-third innings this season, and he is worthy of strong FantasyScore consideration, while offering some cap relief at the most important position.

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta allowed four earned runs on seven hits in five innings Saturday, May 2, against the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the first time in 16 starts at Wrigley Field that he allowed more than three earned runs.
Fantasy Tip: Arrieta ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was due for an off day, and it seemed like it happened against the Brewers. Owners should not worry, as he will likely rebound in his next start or two.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) will eventually get untracked. MLB.com reporter Carrie Muskat points out Billy Williams took 79 at-bats and 29 games to hit his first homer, and he turned out fine. Bryant is up to stay barring a massive slump and is doing fine.

Fantasy Tip: Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has seen limited playing time this season but has gone 5-for-15 at the plate. Owner on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use for their lineups.
Sat, 02 May 2015 07:27:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Coghlan ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has picked up a hit in four of his last six games but only hitting .230, so he is receiving a day off. Chris Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is taking his place in the lineup but is not the best option for owners on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is on a bit of a cold streak with only two hits in his last seven games. Soler still is a solid starting option for owners on FantasyScore, but owners could also look for players who have had more success at the plate recently.

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell cracked his first career home run Friday, May 1, against the Milwaukee Brewers, and it was all of the offense in a 1-0 win. "It feels good and it made it even more special because I'm home at Wrigley. Fans jumping up and down and hearing the crowd roar like that is an awesome feeling," Russell said.
Fantasy Tip: Russell is still hitting just .194 overall, but at just $2,200 (or 4.4% of cap) he is a good value in FantasyScore. It won't take much to exceed DFS salary expectations.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester worked seven scoreless innings Friday, May 1, against the Milwaukee Brewers to earn his first victory. He allowed just three hits while walking only one and striking out four batters. Lester retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced, earning his first win since Sept. 19, 2013, when he was with the Oakland Athletics.
Fantasy Tip: Lester went 0-2 with a 6.23 in his first month of the season, but he has recorded back-to-back quality starts and finally earned his first win. At $7,400 (or 14.8% of cap) he is still a little bit overpriced in FantasyScore, but if he starts pitching like this on a regular basis he will be underpriced before too long.

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez will bat third and play second base for Triple-A Iowa Thursday, April 30. Baez has yet to play this season, because he was on the bereavement list following the death of his 21-year-old sister.
Fantasy Tip: With Addison Russell ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) manning second base for the Cubs, Baez's path back to Chicago might be a long one. He struggled with strikeouts last season, and he didn't have a strong spring training. Baez should only be stashed in keeper/dyantasy and NL-only formats at this point, because he appears blocked at the major league level. There is an outside chance Baez -- or another middle infielder -- could be moved in a deal this summer brightening Baez's 2015 outlook.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to remove Russell ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) from your lineups Wednesday. FantasyScore players should view Herrera ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) as nothing more than a low-priced flier with emerging-star Gerrit Cole on the hill for the Pirates. Russell is likely just receiving a routine day off which will provide him two consecutive rest days, as the Cubs don't play Thursday, April 30. While Russell has struck out 14 times in 29 plate appearances, he is beginning to show life at the dish. He has three runs, three doubles and five RBI over his last five games.

Chicago Cubs OF Junior Lake, who was called up from the minors Monday, April 27, is starting in left field and hitting sixth in the batting order against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke Tuesday, April 28. OF Chris Coghlan is on the bench against the left-hander.
Fantasy Tip: Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is the cheapest you can get at FantasyScore after being called up yesterday. He was hitting .289 (13-for-45) with eight RBI and 12 strikeouts at Triple-A Iowa before the call-up. Lake has power, but he swings and misses often, making him a dice roll at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Russell's first week in the majors has been a rough one, and he is hitting .136 with 12 strikeouts in five games. The big hit could start a hot streak for the highly-touted prospect, but until he shows some more consistency at the plate, he can be avoided at FantasyScore when he is added to the player pool.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 16:45:17 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Wood ($3,700, 7.4% of your cap) is off to a good start with a 3.24 ERA and 17 K's in 16 2/3 innings. He'll be a solid low-end starter to use on FantasyScore next week, especially for the Brewers game.
Sat, 25 Apr 2015 14:59:35 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Pull all Reds and Cubs from your FantasyScore lineups.
Fri, 24 Apr 2015 12:43:00 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Before the injury, Fowler ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) was scoring runs at will with 10 over his previous 10 games, and he stole three bases, too. During the span, he also sported a .279/.380/.488 slash line with five extra-base hits. Typicallly, FatasyScore players are encouraged to be cautious with players returning from injury, but Fowler pinch hit Thursday, April 23, and Fowler is in an ideal lineup spot to to continue touching home plate frequently.
