Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant has 16 walks in 16 games to start his major league career, and he's tied for sixth in the National League in that department. His .458 on-base percentage is tied for third in the NL.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) is surely holding his own in the majors while hitting .291 (16-for-55) with 11 RBI, but his fantasy owners are left desiring more from the super prospect, as he has yet to hit his first major league home run. That'll come eventually, and he remains a solid daily play because he continues to get on base consistently.

Chicago Cubs OF Chris Denorfia (hamstring) aggravated a left hamstring strain Monday, May 4, against the St. Louis Cardinals and left the game. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Denorfia would likely be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) spent the first few weeks of the season on the DL before coming off, so this is a setback for him and the Cubs. Remove Denorfia as an option in your leagues and keep an eye on Junior Lake ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) for a source of low-cost outfield power.

Fantasy Tip: The added dimension is a pleasant surprise for Rizzo, who could be among the top three or four at the position at season's end. At $5,400 (10.8% of your cap), he's a daily consideration on FantasyScore.

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel (finger) is expected to make his next start after pitching against the Milwaukee Brewers with a cracked fingernail on his right middle finger Sunday, May 3. Hammel's next start is projected for Friday, May 8, against the Brewers.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) fastball command was noticeably off Sunday, so perhaps the fingernail played a part in the location problems. While had an excellent outing in his previous start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Hammel needs to string together a few plus-showings before he can be relied on with confidence in any fantasy format.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Molina in all fantasy formats Monda. This is likely just a routine day off for the backstop. Cruz ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has just 17 plate appearances this season which have yielded only three hits. Cap relief is his biggest FantasyScore asset, and daily players should aim higher.
Mon, 04 May 2015 14:13:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Make sure to remove Adams ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) from your fantasy lineups Monday. Facing a left-handed starter is a good time to provide Adams with a day off, as he is riding a 12-for-25 runs. Reynolds ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is just 6-for-34 at the plate this season and has just two hits in his last 21 plate appearances. Reynolds is a risky FantasyScore play, albeit a cheap one.

Fantasy Tip: Peaks and valleys will be the norm for Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) this season. What is more surprising is he hasn't hit a home run. All said, he is currently has seven runs, 11 RBI, two stolen bases and a .278/.418/.370 slash line. Add a little pop at the expense of his on-base percentage going forward, and fantasy owners should be pleased with his production. Bryant has the makings of a high-risk, high-reward play all season long for FantasyScore players.
Mon, 04 May 2015 12:28:15 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Denforia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has been limited to just 20 plate appearances this season, but he has handled the stick well when given the opportunity -- .368/.400/.421 slash line. He could be a sneaky source of cap relief Monday for FantasyScore players. Although, he is far from risk free.
Mon, 04 May 2015 12:21:40 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Soler in daily contests Monday. His 38 strikeouts pace the league, and while his yearly numbers aren't awful (11 runs, two home runs, nine RBI and a .269/.337/.409 slash line), Soler has looked a little miffed at the plate of late. Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has been limited primarily to pinch-hitting duty, but at his cap hit, he could return nice value. He isn't without risk, though.

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel will start against a familiar opponent Sunday, May 3, when the Cubs play the Milwaukee Brewers. Hammel is one of two active pitchers with a 5-0 record against the Brewers. San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner is the only pitcher, with at least five starts against Milwaukee, to have a better ERA than Hammel.
Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has 23 strikeouts through 25 and one-third innings this season, and he is worthy of strong FantasyScore consideration, while offering some cap relief at the most important position.

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta allowed four earned runs on seven hits in five innings Saturday, May 2, against the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the first time in 16 starts at Wrigley Field that he allowed more than three earned runs.
Fantasy Tip: Arrieta ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was due for an off day, and it seemed like it happened against the Brewers. Owners should not worry, as he will likely rebound in his next start or two.
Sat, 02 May 2015 14:19:13 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) will eventually get untracked. MLB.com reporter Carrie Muskat points out Billy Williams took 79 at-bats and 29 games to hit his first homer, and he turned out fine. Bryant is up to stay barring a massive slump and is doing fine.
Sat, 02 May 2015 07:32:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has seen limited playing time this season but has gone 5-for-15 at the plate. Owner on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use for their lineups.
Sat, 02 May 2015 07:27:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Coghlan ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has picked up a hit in four of his last six games but only hitting .230, so he is receiving a day off. Chris Denorfia ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) is taking his place in the lineup but is not the best option for owners on FantasyScore.
Sat, 02 May 2015 07:26:55 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Soler ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is on a bit of a cold streak with only two hits in his last seven games. Soler still is a solid starting option for owners on FantasyScore, but owners could also look for players who have had more success at the plate recently.
