Cubs | Jake Arrieta to be tendered

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:46:10 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta is expected to be tendered a contract by the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2. SP Travis Wood, RPs Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Rex Brothers and OF Chris Coghlan are also expected to be tendered. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Cubs are interested in a long-term deal.

Fantasy Tip: After Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015, he'll surely be very expensive in fantasy baseball drafts next spring. He has now risen to the elite level of starting pitchers, and you'll have to spend an early round pick to secure him.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta wins Cy Young Award

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 15:58:14 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta won the National League Cy Young Award Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Arrieta lead the NL in wins (22), complete games (4) and shutouts (3) with a 1.77 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP and a 9.3 K/9. He also went on an otherworldly 20-game stretch to end the season where he went 16-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 147 strikeouts through 147 innings. Arrieta should be viewed as a fantasy ace in all formats entering the 2016 season.

Cubs | David Ross likely to retire after 2016

Tue, 17 Nov 2015 12:30:37 -0800

Chicago Cubs C David Ross has said the 2016 season will likely be his last, as he wants to "be a dad" following 15 Major League Baseball seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Ross does not play often enough to merit consideration in regular fantasy leagues as he gets about 200 plate appearances a year, mainly serving as personal catcher to Jon Lester. Still, in daily contests, he may be worth a small amount of money so keep an eye on his status once the year starts.

Cubs | Kris Bryant awarded Rookie of the Year

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 15:23:54 -0800

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant won the National League Rookie of the Year Award Monday, Nov. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant arrived as advertised in 2015 and returned fantasy owners with 87 runs, 26 home runs, 99 RBI and a .275/.369/.488 slash line over 650 plate appearances. While Bryant also struck out 199 times, it didn't significantly impact his fantasy results, and the arrow is pointing straight up for the youngster. View Bryant as a top-tier third baseman entering the 2016 season, and he is worth targeting early in drafts.

Cubs | CHC to explore trade talk for two players

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 14:14:56 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler and 2B Javier Baez are the subject of trade interest, and the team will explore offers, according to sources. 3B Kris Bryant, SS Addison Russell and OF Kyle Schwarber are also attracting attention but the club does not intend to move them.

Fantasy Tip: Soler and Baez would bring back pitching, which is what the Cubs sorely need more of at the moment. Soler will get attention in the middle rounds of most mixed drafts, and Baez figures to go a bit lower.

Cubs | Dexter Fowler headed for free agency

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 14:43:15 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Dexter Fowler rejected the Chicago Cubs' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Fowler was a spark plug atop the Chicago lineup in 2015, and he scored 102 runs and flirted with a 20-20 season, as he hit 17 home runs and swiped 20 bags. Most importantly, though, Fowler stayed healthy and played a career-high 156 games. Stay tuned for updates on where he signs, as it'll greatly impact his fantasy upside. It will be tough for him to land in a more favorable spot, though.

Cubs | Starlin Castro expected to start at second

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:03:34 -0800

Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro is expected to be the team's regular starter at second base next season, which could make INF Javier Baez expendable. Multiple teams have expressed interest in trading for him.

Fantasy Tip: Castro began the 2015 season as the Cubs' regular shortstop but was eventually replaced by Addison Russell. However, he ended up receiving regular playing time at the keystone position down the stretch. Castro hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 151 regular-season games and could be a middle infield option in NL-only and deep mixed leagues, although he is a streaky hitter who is prone to deep slumps. Baez's power potential makes him a coveted player in dynasty and deep keeper leagues, although his opportunities to receive regular at-bats in Chicago will be limited, barring an injury to a starter or another infielder getting traded this offseason.

Cubs | Jeff Samardzija could return to Cubs

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:47:11 -0800

The Chicago Cubs aren't ruling out a reunion with free-agent SP Jeff Samardzija (White Sox).

Fantasy Tip: Samardzija had a brutal year with the Pale Hose, so he's likely to leave for greener pastures, and a reunion on the North Side makes plenty of sense. His terrible 2015 campaign will have many fantasy owners avoiding him completely, but he's worth a late-round look depending on where he lands.

Cubs | Dexter Fowler receives qualifying offer

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 12:20:23 -0800

Chicago Cubs OF Dexter Fowler was extended a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the team.

Fantasy Tip: A career-high 102 runs and 17 home runs paired with Fowler's 46 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a .250/.346/.411 slash line this season made him one of the best late-round steals or grabs off the waiver wire of the 2015 season. Be careful not to overreach for Fowler in 2016, though.

Cubs | CHI could bring back Dexter Fowler

Thu, 22 Oct 2015 17:14:59 -0700

The Chicago Cubs appear to have interest in re-signing OF Dexter Fowler, although the club also has alternative plans for center field, according to team president Theo Epstein.

Fantasy Tip: Fowler hit .250 with 17 home runs, 46 RBIs and 20 steals in 156 regular-season games as the Cubs' leadoff hitter and center fielder, providing a veteran presence to a team loaded with plenty of young talent. He should be selected in the middle rounds of drafts for deep mixed fantasy baseball leagues next season.

Cubs | Kyle Schwarber owns a piece of history

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 13:12:46 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Kyle Schwarber is the only player in Major League history to hit five postseason home runs before turning 23 years old. He faces New York Mets SP Steven Matz in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Schwarber ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) boasts a .375/.444/1.000 slash line with the five home runs and seven RBI through eight playoff games. He finished the regular season with 16 home runs, 43 RBI and a .246/.355/.487 slash line through 273 plate appearances. He is an elite fantasy option in all fantasy formats, but facing a southpaw, he may not be worth his hefty cap hit at FantasyScore Wednesday.

Cubs | Jorge Soler moves up to No. 2

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 12:39:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler is hitting second and starting in right field against New York Mets SP Steven Matz in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21. OF Kyle Schwarber has been dropped to sixth in the lineup against the lefty.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) is seeing the ball well and had a home run last night. He had just two of his 10 homers against lefties during the year, but the move up the lineup makes him a more intriguing pick on FantasyScore today. Schwarber ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) also went deep last night and has five bombs in the postseason, but he hit just .143/.213/.268 with two of his 16 homers off southpaws. This might be the day to fade Schwarber.

Cubs | Miguel Montero out for Game 4

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 12:37:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero is not in the lineup for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21. C David Ross is behind the plate and is batting ninth against Mets SP Steven Matz.

Fantasy Tip: Ross ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is a defensive specialist that has even less daily value when hitting behind the pitcher in the lineup. Look elsewhere for your backstop.

Cubs | Jason Hammel looks to extend season

Tue, 20 Oct 2015 22:27:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel gets the start in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) lasted just three innings in his first playoff showing against the Cardinals Oct. 13, allowing two runs with three walks and just two strikeouts. In his first appearances against the Mets May 13, he allowed one run and five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over eight innings in a no-decision. He'll likely have to pitch that well Wednesday if the Cubs hope to avoid the golf course.
