Where do your teams sit, and what -- if anything -- do you do to improve your chances of winning? Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuriesTue, 21 May 2013 14:52:36 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said 3B Josh Vitters is still a priority for the team in the future. Vitters is batting .259 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 54 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa this year. Sveum said Vitters "has got power, can hit a fastball… but there's a lot of development left in him." 3B Ian Stewart is playing behind Vitters at Iowa. Fantasy Tip: Based on that, it doesn't sound like the Cubs are rushing to call up Vitters, especially if Luis Valbuena keeps playing the way he is. It's even worse news for Stewart, who probably won't be with the team past this season. Vitters would be an immediate option for NL-only teams were he to be called up, but there's no telling when that might happen. Share: Cubs | Eduardo Sanchez claimed Tue, 21 May 2013 12:20:13 -0700 The Chicago Cubs claimed RP Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, May 21, and sent him to Triple-A Iowa. He had a 3.72 ERA in nine outings with Triple-A Memphis this year. RP Michael Bowden will be designated for assignment Tuesday to make a roster spot for SP Matt Garza (lat). Share: Cubs | Carlos Villanueva going to bullpen Sat, 18 May 2013 09:23:53 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said SP Carlos Villanueva will be moving to the bullpen since SP Matt Garza (lat) is rejoining the starting rotation. Share: Cubs | Matt Garza returning next week Sat, 18 May 2013 09:22:01 -0700 The Chicago Cubs will activate SP Matt Garza (lat) from the 15-day disabled list in time for him to start their game Tuesday, May 21. Manager Dale Sveum said Garza likely will be limited to 85 to 90 pitches in his first start. Fantasy Tip: Garza has been out since last July because of elbow and lat injuries. Owners should look to add him in their starting lineups in all leagues, but he could be limited in his first few starts since he is coming back from the injury. Share: Cubs | Matt Garza excels in rehab outing Thu, 16 May 2013 21:54:46 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) logged six shutout innings Thursday, May 16, in a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. He allowed two hits and struck out six while not allowing a walk. He's on schedule to join the big-league club sometime next week. When Garza comes back, P Carlos Villanueva looks like the most realistic rotation casualty. Though manager Dale Sveum hasn't shut down the idea of a six-man rotation, it's unlikely to happen in the long term. Fantasy Tip: He'll probably have around two months to work back into form so the Cubs can showcase him for a possible late-July trade. Villanueva can be dropped in mixed leagues when Garza re-establishes his rotation spot. Scott Feldman has pitched relatively well lately, and Villanueva's past bullpen experience is actually working against his fantasy value here. Share: Cubs | Carlos Marmol denies report Wed, 15 May 2013 14:04:35 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol is denying an Internet report saying that he wants out of Chicago. Fantasy Tip: Marmol has been a disappointment again this year and quickly lost the closer's role in April. Now, Kevin Gregg has taken the job and Kyuji Fujikawa is in front of Marmol in the bullpen. He's lost most of the small fantasy value he had in all leagues. A change of scenery might be his only salvation at this point. Share: Cubs | Jorge Soler tearing it up on farm Tue, 14 May 2013 20:04:01 -0700 Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler was named Florida State League Player of the Week after going 7-for-15 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, four RBI and five runs scored in four games for Class A Daytona. He has reached base in 10 consecutive games. Share: Cubs | Arodys Vizcaino on road back Tue, 14 May 2013 20:03:32 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) will continue his rehab from Tommy John surgery with the Cubs, rather than in Arizona at the team's spring training facility. He joined the team Monday, May 13, but he is still a couple of weeks away from appearing in a game, according to manager Dale Sveum. Share: Cubs | Scott Baker remains in Arizona Tue, 14 May 2013 18:26:07 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Scott Baker (elbow) remains in Arizona at the team's minor-league facility to continue rehab from Tommy John surgery one year ago. Share: Cubs | Luis Valbuena expected to start Wednesday Tue, 14 May 2013 14:23:36 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (finger) is expected to start Wednesday, May 15, and he was icing his sprained finger Tuesday, May 14. Share: Cubs | May use six-man rotation Tue, 14 May 2013 14:19:32 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the team may use a six-man rotation when SP Matt Garza (lat) returns to the team. Fantasy Tip: Travis Wood, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva have all been carrying their weight in the rotation, so Sveum might find it too hard to bump one of them to the bullpen to make room for Garza. Don't expect the six-man rotation to last for long, though, so those three might be competing to stay in the rotation in their next few starts. Share: Cubs | Matt Garza to rehab Thursday Mon, 13 May 2013 16:29:36 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) will make another rehab outing for Triple-A Iowa Thursday, May 16, and the team will make a decision on if they'll activate him from the disabled list after that. He allowed three hits and walked two in 3 1/3 innings with Double-A Tennessee Saturday, May 11, for his third minor league rehab start. Garza threw with a lot of "aggressiveness" during his bullpen session Monday, May 13. Fantasy Tip: Garza is nearing full strength, and he hasn't had any setbacks during his rehab process. He needs to be owned in all leagues for when he returns to the Cubbies' rotation. Share: Cubs | Luis Valbuena available Mon, 13 May 2013 16:15:35 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (finger) is available to pinch hit Monday, May 13, after spraining the little finger on his right hand while sliding Saturday, May 11. Valbuena will get at least one more day of rest Tuesday, May 14, with the team facing a left-handed pitcher. Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom has been playing in Valbuena's absence, and the two third baseman have been locked in a platoon at the hot corner. They're both useful in deep NL-only leagues. Share: Cubs | Arodys Vizcaino being evaluated Mon, 13 May 2013 16:07:35 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP Arodys Vizcaino (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, was being examined by team doctors Monday, May 13. Share: Cubs | No extension talks for Jeff Samardzija Mon, 13 May 2013 13:49:17 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Jeff Samardzija's agent, Mark Rogers, said there is nothing to report in terms of extension talks between his client and the team. However, both sides are expected to re-evaluate their positions on a long-term deal after the 2013 season. The two sides had preliminary talks about a three-year deal in the fall of 2012, but both sides agreed to table discussions for the future. Samardzija is currently under club control until after the 2015 season. Fantasy Tip: Levine suggests that the Cubs probably won't be able to realistically compete again until 2014, when many of their up-and-coming arms will be major league-ready. Signing Samardzija to a long-term extension appears imminent, especially since Edwin Jackson is the only other starter on the team that is locked up. Share: ![]() |
