Where do your teams sit, and what -- if anything -- do you do to improve your chances of winning? Boston Red Sox news, rumors and injuriesSat, 18 May 2013 12:31:29 -0700 Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) and SS Stephen Drew (back) are not in the lineup against the Minnesota Twins Saturday, May 18. Share: Red Sox | David Ross not ready Fri, 17 May 2013 15:17:36 -0700 Boston Red Sox C David Ross (concussion) is still experiencing post-concussion symptoms, and his exam has been pushed back to Monday, May 20. Share: Red Sox | Shane Victorino day-to-day Fri, 17 May 2013 14:39:04 -0700 Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) is being listed as day-to-day with a sore back. He's hoping to return Saturday, May 18. Share: Red Sox | Shane Victorino out Fri, 17 May 2013 12:48:17 -0700 Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) is out of the lineup after aggravating his back injury Thursday, May 16. Fantasy Tip: Daniel Nava and Jonny Gomes will once again gain at-bats if Victorino is out for an extended stretch. It seems more likely that Victorino could land on the disabled list this time around. Nava, who is a switch hitter, should be your first target in deep mixed leagues. Share: Red Sox | Daniel Bard won't be demoted Fri, 17 May 2013 11:06:09 -0700 The Boston Red Sox haven't considered moving RP Daniel Bard from Double-A Portland to extended spring training despite his struggles. Bard walked five and threw only eight of his 30 pitches for strikes in one-plus inning for Portland Wednesday, May 15. Fantasy Tip: Bard appears to have hit rock bottom in his attempt to return as a relief pitcher. Don't expect to see him back in Boston any time soon, though, even with Joel Hanrahan (elbow) out for the rest of the season. Share: Red Sox | Joel Hanrahan has surgery Thu, 16 May 2013 16:42:54 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (elbow) wound up having Tommy John surgery on his elbow Thursday, May 16, and had his flexor tendon operated on, too. Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan is done for this season and will miss at least the first month of next season, as well. Drop him in all leagues. Share: Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks shaking slump? Thu, 16 May 2013 15:19:06 -0700 Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (ribs) had a double and a home run Wednesday, May 15, and although he said he's still having trouble catching his breath and sleeping on his right side, it appears as though he's coming out of a slump that had his average at .200 and his on-base percentage sitting at .231. "Whether it coincides with the collision, and I mean that with all sincerity, he's not pulling off the ball as much," manager John Farrell said. "He's staying to the middle of the field, and that's when his power really shows and the bat stays in the zone longer." Fantasy Tip: Middlebrooks has realistic 30-homer power at the hot corner, but his streakiness can become a problem for his fantasy baseball owners. He's typically been a slow starter in the minors, too, so keep that in mind. Middlebrooks' average was added by a fortunate hit rate last year, so don't expect him to repeat that. Share: Red Sox | Felix Doubront makes tweaks Thu, 16 May 2013 15:13:39 -0700 Boston Red Sox SP Felix Doubront worked with pitching coach Juan Nieves to adjust the stride in his delivery in order to generate more velocity and improve the command of his pitches. Doubront has given up 12 runs in nine innings in his last two outings, and he's pitching to keep his spot in the rotation right now. SPs Allen Webster and Franklin Morales (pectoral) could take his spot if he continues to struggle. Fantasy Tip: Doubront must have a better outing tonight in order for the Red Sox to consider keeping him in the rotation over Morales or Webster. Morales is probably the better bet to take the rotation spot since the team is adamant on keeping him stretched out as a starter. Keep Morales in mind in your AL-only leagues. Share: Red Sox | Andrew Bailey to make rehab outing Thu, 16 May 2013 12:50:36 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) will pitch for Triple-A Pawtucket Saturday, May 18, and the team is planning on activating him from the disabled list Monday, May 20. Share: Red Sox | Andrew Bailey update Wed, 15 May 2013 16:12:05 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) will return from the disabled list at the latest Monday, May 20. He will throw a simulated game Thursday, May 16, and the team will then decide if they'll have him pitch in a minor league game before being activated. Fantasy Tip: It seems likely that Boston will have Bailey pitch in a rehab game, but he could still make his return this weekend. Junichi Tazawa will go back to a setup role when Bailey returns, but he's worth hanging onto in deep leagues. Share: Red Sox | Franklin Morales still rehabbing Wed, 15 May 2013 16:10:52 -0700 Boston Red Sox SP Franklin Morales (pectoral) pitched three innings for Triple-A Pawtucket Monday, May 13, and he'll go four innings for Pawtucket Saturday, May 18. The team prefers to use him as starting rotation depth, so he'll continue to be stretched out as a starter, and he could replace SP Felix Doubront in the rotation if he continues to struggle. Fantasy Tip: Morales is an option strictly in AL-only leagues for now because he isn't guaranteed a rotation spot just yet. If you're desperate, add him now and stash him. Share: Red Sox | David Ortiz battling soreness Tue, 14 May 2013 20:24:48 -0700 Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed Tuesday, May 14, that DH David Ortiz (oblique) is dealing with a sore oblique muscle. Fantasy Tip: Ortiz belted a three-run home run in four at-bats Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, and is hitting .329, so it appears safe to keep starting him in all fantasy leagues despite the discomfort. Share: Red Sox | David Ortiz sore Tue, 14 May 2013 17:15:42 -0700 Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (oblique) said a sore left oblique muscle was responsible for his recent slump. "I've been dealing with a sore left side," Ortiz said. "For that reason I was pulling the ball rather than hitting it the opposite way." He had one hit in his last 20 at-bats entering Tuesday, May 14. Fantasy Tip: There's no doubting that Ortiz can still swing the stick at age 37, but he's pretty fragile these days, and he's looked very ginger while running the bases at times. It could only be a matter of time before another ailment, or a recurrance of his Achilles' problems, lands him back on the disabled list. Share: Red Sox | Andrew Bailey feels good Tue, 14 May 2013 13:13:02 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) felt good after a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, May 14, and he'll throw a simulated game Thursday, May 16. Share: Red Sox | Hoping to get Andrew Bailey back soon Tue, 14 May 2013 11:00:55 -0700 Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said the team hopes to have RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) back in five to seven days, and Bailey will be put back into the closer's role. Fantasy Tip: Junichi Tazawa will hold onto his value as the fill-in closer for another week it looks like. Tazawa has some long-term value as a handcuff to the oft-injured Bailey for the rest of the season, though, now that Joel Hanrahan (elbow) is done for the season. Those in deep mixed leagues will have to consider hanging onto Tazawa for that reason, and the fact that he's putting up great numbers. Share: ![]() |
