Fantasy Tip: The 31-year-old right-hander is obviously an injury risk, but there's hope that he can rebound yet again after he was on an impressive run before his injury in 2015. If he can avoid injury, he can be an excellent value pick late in mixed league drafts.

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is in the final stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he says he's 100%. However, the Red Sox are being conservative with Vazquez because of the presence of Cs Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan. Vazquez has been pain-free, but Boston wants to see how he responds to workouts in spring training. Swihart is expected to start on opening day after hitting .310 with four home runs, 17 RBI and an .822 OPS in his final 129 at-bats last year. There has been speculation that the Red Sox move Swihart to first base when Vazquez is completely ready, but Boston isn't entertaining those thoughts yet.
Fantasy Tip: The switch-hitting Swihart held up pretty well last year considering he was rushed to the majors. His solid second half gives hope to fantasy owners willing to take a chance on him as a prospect with plenty of upside. You'll have to be patient with the defense-first Vazquez, but the fact remains that Swihart is and will always be the more attractive fantasy asset.

The Boston Red Sox appear ready to pay OF Allen Craig $9 million to open the year at Class AAA Pawtucket unless he impresses in spring training. "It makes no sense," said one Nation League official who watched him often with the Cardinals. "This is the guy you wanted up in every big situation. He's gone from that to being unable to make the major league roster."
Fantasy Tip: Craig's drastic fall from grace is hard to explain but likely has something to do with a serious foot injury he suffered before moving to Boston. For whatever reason he just hasn't been the same player and might never be again. It'll probably take an injury or two on the major league roster to open up playing time for him.

Fantasy Tip: Bogaerts had just seven home runs last year, and he is only 23 years old, so the feeling is the power may eventually come. He should be considered in the middle of AL drafts and the later rounds of mixed drafts while his power is down.

Fantasy Tip: Health has been the biggest hurdle for Ramirez, as he has missed substantial time in four of the past five seasons. He projects to be a polarizing player in 2016 drafts because he still owns excellent upside and did start 2015 with 40 runs, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and a .273/.322/.478 slash line through the first 65 games of the season. He is a worth a lottery ticket stab in the middle rounds of mixed leagues drafts.

Boston Red Sox OFs Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. are set to be the starting outfielders in 2016, with Bradley in center field, Castillo in left and Betts in right. OF Chris Young is expected to start against left-handed pitchers and mix in regularly against righties.
Fantasy Tip: After the breakout year that Betts had in 2015, he's unlikely to make it past the second round of fantasy drafts. Young is expected to platoon with Bradley the most, so those two are more of targets in deep mixed leagues. Castillo is the wild card. He has plenty of talent but only had five homers in 80 games last year. A cheap investment there could yield plenty of value.

Fantasy Tip: For all the potential and raw skills, there are still a lot of holes in Castillo's game. He was successful in just four of his nine steal attempts, and his .253/.288/.359 slash line last season was extremely underwhelming. He is projected to start in left field in 2016, but lefty-killer Chris Young could cut into his playing time, which is concerning. Still, view Castillo as a an excellent late-round gamble leading into the season given the upside he has flashed in spurts.

Fantasy Tip: Swihart, who will turn 24 in April, hit .274 with five home runs and 31 RBIs in 84 games during his rookie campaign. He has plenty of offensive upside and should be selected during the middle rounds of drafts for mixed fantasy leagues. Boston's depth at the catching position is allowing the team to be more patient with prospect Christian Vazquez, who missed the entire 2015 season because of Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Although Ramirez was a huge disappointment during his first year in the American League, he has enough upside to be worth selecting during the middle rounds of mixed fantasy leagues. It's hoped that moving from the outfield to first base will also allow him to remain healthy, after he missed significant playing time in four of the last five seasons.

Fantasy Tip: The rookie southpaw pitched well in 2015, but oddly, he did struggle against lefty bats and allowed a .272/.311/.509 slash line to them. There is upside for 2016, and Rodriguez is a potential late-round flier in deep mixed leagues. FantasyScore players and streamer enthusiasts in yearly formats will want to keep an eye on him favorable matchups, too.

Fantasy Tip: The Panda had one of his most disappointing seasons in 2015, especially when considering most fantasy owners had high hopes for him in his first season in Boston. Sandoval has dropped weight before and it affected his power. But considering his overall game dropped drastically (.245 average), slimming up might be a good thing this time around.

Fantasy Tip: Though he posted his highest ERA (4.14) and WHIP (1.33) since becoming a regular member of Boston's bullpen, Tazawa had a fine showing in 2015, continuing to solidify himself as a fine set-up man. He averages about a strikeout per inning annually and is a good bet to rack up a considerable number of holds.

Fantasy Tip: Through 25 starts last season, Kelly allowed four earned runs or more in 10 games. However, he held opponents to three runs or fewer in each of his final eight outings and returned seven wins with a 2.35 ERA and 36 strikeouts through 46 innings. He is an under-the-radar option to take a swing at late in drafts this spring.
Thu, 31 Dec 2015 18:28:29 -0800
Fantasy Tip: This marks the second consecutive year where Castillo will participate in winter ball, although he wasn't originally expected to do so this offseason. He is slated to begin 2016 as Boston's starting left fielder, after hitting .253 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 80 games last season. He should be selected in the middle rounds of AL-only leagues and the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.
Tue, 08 Dec 2015 11:44:12 -0800
Fantasy Tip: It's a bit interesting Boston would have interest in Miller considering they just signed David Price, but they also just traded away Wade Miley. A move to Fenway Park and the powerful American League East would be a knock on his fantasy value, but he'd also be pitching for a much better offensive club. Stay tuned.
