"We're going to stretch him out as much as we can so if something happens and one of the guys can't go, if we choose to he can be a starter," said manager Fredi Gonzalez of Medlen. "He's got that flexibility." "It feels better now than it did (in December)," Hanson said. "I'm definitely a lot more optimistic now than I was even last month." Hanson played long toss without any problems Thursday, Feb. 2. He can make an extra $1 million in 2013 each for 128, 133, 138 and 140 games played in 2012. Comment (0) | Share: Braves | Jason Heyward worked out hard Tue, 31 Jan 2012 16:24:27 -0800 Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (shoulder) did physical therapy to improve the strength in his shoulder twice a week this offseason, and he also worked out with weights three times a week. Cardio work was also implemented, which involved a regular running routine. He has dropped from 256 pounds to 235 and is eating healthier. Much of Heyward's offseason was spent getting his mind where it needs to be for the upcoming season. At the start of the offseason, he went back to the basics of his swing with his personal hitting coach, C.J. Stewart. "I was working on my stance, working on my load," Heyward said. "Basically all the things I need to have as far as a foundation to allow my swing to work." "When the ball jumped off his bat (in 2010), there was a sound unlike you had ever heard," Jones said. "I didn't see that at all last year. It's due to some of things he was doing mechanically. The ball is jumping off his bat now close to the way it was in 2010." Hitting coach Greg Walker and assistant Scott Fletcher have fixed some mechanical issues that Heyward was dealing with when he dealt with a sore right shoulder last season. One adjustment he has made has been with the way the bat sits in his hands. Heyward is now keeping his bat more vertical while maintaining a loose grip as opposed to letting his bat lean back like he had it last year. "I sit here with three weeks to go before spring training and I'm not ready to say this is it," Jones said. "I still feel I can go out and play a solid third base, which I did last year. And I feel I can still be productive in the middle of the lineup, whether it's in the three-hole, five-hole, six-hole or whatever. It doesn't bother me where I hit." Jones aggravated his right knee in November when he stepped in a whole and turned it while hunting. Jones had an MRI exam but chose not to tell the team about it at the time. "Everything's good" with Hanson and Jurrjens, McDowell said. "I talked to JJ last week. Tommy's been in here working out. He was not in attendance at the team's voluntary early throwing program Monday, Jan. 30. SPs Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado could begin the season in the rotation in place of Hudson. Colorado is currently focusing on minor trades as spring training nears. Smith has also drawn some interest from the Oakland Athletics. The Tampa Bay Rays are not in the hunt for Smith's services, even though the Rockies covet SPs Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann.
