Braves | Christian Bethancourt starting vs. Philly

Wed, 06 May 2015 14:02:49 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Christian Bethancourt is batting sixth and starting behind the plate against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Bethancourt ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has struggled to gain traction at the plate this season, as he is just 7-for-40 with two RBI. However, he could reward on his cap-effective price against opposing starter Jerome Williams. After all, Williams has allowed 14 runs and 33 hits over his last four starts.

Braves | A.J. Pierzynski sitting vs. Philly

Wed, 06 May 2015 13:57:36 -0700

Atlanta Braves C A.J. Pierzynski is not in the starting lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, May 6. C Christian Bethancourt is batting sixth and starting behind the plate Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Pierzynski ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) in all fantasy formats Wednesday. The 38-year-old backstop is off to a solid start to the season with 14 RBI and a .344/.377/.541 slash line over 69 plate appearances. Bethancourt ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) projects as a nice low-priced flier Wednesday. He is hitting in a spot conducive to plating runs, and opposing hurler Jerome Williams instills little fear.

Braves | Shelby Miller in dominant groove

Wed, 06 May 2015 13:26:31 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Shelby Miller is 6-1 with a 1.58 ERA over his past 11 starts, and he has held opposing hitters to a .183 batting average. He has pitched six or more innings in eight of those starts and allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of 11 outings. His offense failed to score a single run while he was in the game in the five games he failed to win during the stretch. Miller adopted a sinker from Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson when they both pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, and Miller began throwing the sinker a lot and became more efficient and capable of pitching deeper into games.

Fantasy Tip: Miller ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) credits adding the sinker to his arsenal around the 2014 All-Star break for his improved mound work. He struggled late in his rookie year with arm fatigue and then looked to be suffering through a sophomore slump early in 2014. Now, Miller appears like he could pitch his way into the conversation of being a top-tier arm. Until he proves otherwise, Miller is an excellent FantasyScore option, especially at his modest cap hit.

Braves | Jose Peraza playing second

Wed, 06 May 2015 07:34:33 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Jose Peraza has only played second base at Triple-A Gwinnett and hasn't played center field this season.

Fantasy Tip: He's hitting .320 with nine steals in 97 at-bats. With Jace Peterson on a roll, he'll need an injury or position switch for a callup. Hold on to him in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Jace Peterson on a roll

Wed, 06 May 2015 07:34:04 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Jace Peterson is hitting .394 with five RBI in his last 10 games.

Fantasy Tip: Peterson ($2,100, 4.2% of your cap) is at a nice value on FantasyScore during his hot streak.

Braves | Shelby Miller efficient in shutout

Tue, 05 May 2015 22:43:26 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Shelby Miller threw the third complete game shutout of his career Tuesday, May 5, against the Philadelphia Phillies and he needed just 99 pitches. He allowed just three hits with one walk while striking out eight batters.

Fantasy Tip: Miller ($5,400; 10.8% of cap) is a solid mid-level FantasyScore option heading into his next scheduled start Monday, May 11, on the road against the Cincinnati Reds on national television.

Braves | Kelly Johnson has been surprising

Tue, 05 May 2015 17:52:54 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson entered the game Tuesday, May 5, against the Philadelphia Phillies with a team-high five home runs in 61 at-bats. He is also second on the team with 13 RBIs and a .525 slugging percentage.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($1,800; 3.6% of cap) is a nice cheap source of power for FantasyScore owners at second base, and he will also help to save salary to spread across other positions.

Braves | Personal catchers for Braves?

Tue, 05 May 2015 16:15:09 -0700

Atlanta Braves Cs A.J. Pierzynski and Christian Bethancourt could be paired with SPs Shelby Miller and Julio Teheran, respectively, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Miller has worked with Pierzynski since the two were teammates with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. Miller's start Tuesday is his ninth career start with Pierzynski catching him, and Miller had a 4.29 ERA in six games with Pierzynski catching him last year. Teheran has made eight career starts with Bethancourt as his catcher and has a 2.23 ERA in those games.

Fantasy Tip: Pierzynski ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has seen the most of the playing time behind the plate thanks to his ridiculous start to the year, however, he's gone hitless the last two games. Pierzynski can't maintain that pace, and as soon as he starts slowing down, Bethancourt could see more of an even time split.

Braves | Cameron Maybin starting Tuesday

Tue, 05 May 2015 14:31:03 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Cameron Maybin is starting in center field and hitting eighth in the batting order against Philadelphia Phillies SP Chad Billingsley Tuesday, May 5. OF Eric Young Jr. starts on the bench yet again.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) will continue to be a frustrating play at the bottom of the lineup for Atlanta. The matchup is nice going against Billingsley in his season debut, but Maybin remains an unattractive FantasyScore play.

Braves | More fastball for Julio Teheran

Mon, 04 May 2015 19:47:48 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran pledged to use his fastball more, and he threw the pitch in 66.7 percent of his 101 pitches against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, May 3. It was a season-high in fastball percentage for Teheran, while he threw a season-low 20.8 percent of sliders.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran was trying to mix in other pitches in his previous few starts, but he went 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in the three starts before Sunday. Some were worried that he was healthy, but he was just being too fine. The power pitcher is a solid value at $7,400 (or 14.8% of cap) in FantasyScore.

Braves | Nick Markakis still on top

Mon, 04 May 2015 19:46:26 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis was in the leadoff spot for the 10th consecutive game Monday, May 4, against the Philadelphia Phillies. "He gets on base and he puts the ball in play," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I like it and, really, from all of the options that we have he's the one that makes the most sense."

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($2,900; 5.8% of cap) has posted just 15 strikeouts in 104 plate appearances. While his chance at RBI chances might be decreased in the leadoff spot, he will have more chance at runs scored for FantasyScore players.

Braves | Cameron Maybin starting in CF

Mon, 04 May 2015 13:48:00 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Cameron Maybin is starting in center field and hitting ninth in the batting order against Philadelphia Phillies SP Aaron Harang Monday, May 4. OF Eric Young Jr. is sitting the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is hitting just .222 (10-for-45), but he does have four home runs and nine RBI on the season and has been more productive in center field than Young this year. Maybin is an inconsistent performer at the plate and won't be that attractive to FantasyScore users unless he's near the top of the lineup.

Braves | Kelly Johnson sitting vs. Phillies

Mon, 04 May 2015 13:43:02 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Kelly Johnson is not in the starting lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies Monday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) has been a pleasant surprise for the Braves with 10 runs, five home runs and 13 RBI on the season. His .533 slugging percentage leads the team, too. Fantasy owners should be a little skeptical, though, and Johnson is more of a desperation add than anything in seasonal formats. However, FantasyScore players could take a low-priced flier when he faces a favorable pitching matchup.

Braves | Jose Peraza heating up in minors

Mon, 04 May 2015 10:19:31 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Jose Peraza is hitting .385 (20-for-52) with no extra-base hits, a .421 on-base percentage and six stolen bases in his last 14 games in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Peraza is one of the Braves' top prospects, and he was battling for the starting second base job in spring training. He has very little power to speak of, but he could be an option to be called up soon if Jace Peterson (.239-0-6) continues to struggle at the keystone. Peraza should be on the radar of those in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Mike Minor not close to returning

Sun, 03 May 2015 11:12:56 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) was recently moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list, in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for INF Pedro Ciriaco. General manager John Hart said Minor doesn't appear to be close to returning to action anytime soon. "There has not been any measurable improvement that you want to see," Hart said. "We've taken the MRIs. We are trying to stay as patient as we can and Mike is doing everything he can. At this point, things haven't progressed."

Fantasy Tip: According to Hart, the Braves should know more about Minor's status in the next seven to 10 days. There is no timetable for him to resume throwing and it would be surprising to see him pitching in meaningful games before the All-Star break. He remains a stash candidate for owners in deep fantasy leagues who can afford to use the roster space on him.
