Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Johnson isn't likely to start at any one position, but the utility player should find plenty of at-bats. He is a low-end FantasyScore option at $2,500 (or 5.0% of cap).

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to remove the protective walking boot from his left foot Friday, April 3. He's missed most of spring training after being diagnosed with sesamoiditis, and he's unlikely to be ready to return before May. OF Eric Young Jr. has had a strong spring and is expected to start the season as the team's everyday center fielder. Upton has been able to hit in the cages with his boot.
Fantasy Tip: Upton has essentially become an afterthought in most standard 12-team mixed leagues because of his injury and his last two poor seasons in Atlanta. Young Jr. is a popular sleeper option in the later rounds for his stolen base prowess, and he could continue to see consistent playing time in the team's outfield when Upton eventually returns. Young ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) should be a cheap option for stolen bases at FantasyScore, too.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran ($7,600, 15.2% of cap) went 14-13 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.08 WHIP and 186 strikeouts in 221 innings in 2014 with the Braves. Teheran has really come into his own in Atlanta's rotation and is just a notch below the rest of the fantasy baseball aces. Don't expect many wins from Teheran this year with a lackluster offense backing him, but a matchup in Miami on opening day makes him definitely worth consideration at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Peterson has impressed by hitting .341 in 44 spring at-bats thus far. At $2,000 (4.0% of cap), he's an enticing bargain on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Buck saw the writing on the wall as the Braves figure to go with A.J. Pierzynski as backup to Christian Bethancourt. If you were figuring on Buck as a late-round flier, feel free to cross him off your draft list.

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson is unlikely to be used in a strict platoon but could be used in a soft platoon, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Johnson batted .395 in 114 at-bats against left-handed pitchers and .231 in 468 at-bats against right-handed pitchers last season. In 2013, he hit .381 in 134 at-bats against lefties and .300 in 384 at-bats against right-handed pitchers. Johnson has gained comfort with his adjusted batting stance, which focused on lowering his hands. He's totaled five hits, including a two-run homer against Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed SP Vance Worley Thursday, March 26, in his past six spring training at-bats.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) needs to avoid being platooned if he hopes to retain his already modest value. He's unlikely to provide value in standard mixed leagues and is a middle-tier option in NL-only and large mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Bethancourt was down about a week and lost 6 pounds due to the flu. He'll have to play catch-up, and his strength and durability will be worth watching. At $2,800 (5.6% of your cap), he's a low-end flyer on FantasyScore. A.J. Pierzynski ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is also on the roster, and he could see more time the first couple of weeks.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (elbow) wore a protective guard over his left elbow Tuesday, March 24, one day after getting hit by a pitch on the elbow. He went 1-for-3 and hit a two-run homer in Tuesday's contest, which pushed his average to .467, with two homers and 12 RBI in 10 games.
Fantasy Tip: Simmons doesn't appear to be injured after getting plunked Monday. The young shortstop has some power upside -- he hit 17 homers in 2013 -- but hasn't hit for a high average, despite rarely striking out. He's a fine late-round target for gamers looking to fill a middle infield spot or take a chance on some upside at shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: If you're looking for secure production in the late stages of drafts, Markakis fits the bill. While there is limited upside, he chips in across all fantasy categories and has avoided injury in all but one season during his nine-year career. Continue to check back for updates, but unless there are setbacks, Markakis looks set for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Minor is basically starting spring training all over again, and he projects to return in late-May or early-June. With his 2014 season mired by shoulder issues, his fantasy stock is becoming a risky undertaking, and you shouldn't be afraid to allow him to take up space on an opponent's roster. Still, he returned near-elite numbers in 2013, so there could be upside for a patient owner.

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) had two hits, including a double, in his spring training debut Monday, March 23. He will play right field Tuesday, March 24, too, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We'll see how he feels after running the bases -- the first time he's run the bases in a game in a long time," Gonzalez said. "But it was nice to get him three at-bats. That second at-bat he really smoked that ball."
Fantasy Tip: Markakis is a late-round option in mixed leagues, as he doesn't make a significant impact in any one fantasy category but chips in slightly across them all. Continue to check back for updates, but it appears Markakis is on track to play opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Minor battled through shoulder issues all of last season, so expecting him to return to the near-elite level of production he showed during 2013 is ill-advised. He is a stash candidate in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, but a solid return is far more speculative than certain. Don't be afraid to let him be someone else's roster clog, either.

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) is expected to be the designated hitter in the spring training game against the Houston Astros Monday, March 23. Markakis took part in batting practice Sunday, March 22, for the third straight day.
Fantasy Tip: Markakis' status for the start of the regular season is uncertain, so owners should consider tracking his progress. Markakis helps in most of the offensive categories but is not a big impact bat. He could be an option in the later rounds of drafts.
Sun, 22 Mar 2015 07:50:13 -0700
Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) is expected to play in a game within the next few days, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We've got to ramp him up the right way to get into games," Gonzalez said. "I don't know when that will happen. He might come in tomorrow and say, 'Can I get a couple at-bats? Can I go to the Minor Leagues to get some at-bats?'"
Fantasy Tip: Markakis doesn't make a huge impact in any single fantsy category, but he tips the scales a little in them all. Expect his new supporting cast in Atlanta to further contribute to the downward slide in production he has experienced over the past few seasons, though. Markakis is a late-round option in mixed leagues, although, he does hold more value in points leagues, and FantasyScore contests, because he has averaged a .345 on-base percentage and 233 total bases per year over the past four seasons.
Sat, 21 Mar 2015 07:49:17 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Markakis' status for the start of the regular season is uncertain at this point but may not miss a lot of time if he is not ready for the opener. Markakis does not make a big impact in any of the fantasy categories and could be a later-round option for owners on mixed leagues.
