Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Correcting a previous report, Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson (hand) suffered a bone bruise on his left hand, as the fracture in his left hand was an existing injury. Johnson will be re-evaluated in two weeks, and he is expected to miss three to six weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Alberto Callaspo ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) projects to receive the majority of starts in Johnson's ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) absence, and Callaspo's fantasy value gains a fleeting boost with regular at-bats. Still, Callaspo is only worth owning, and Johnson is only worth stashing, in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) was a late scratch because of an illness Thursday, April 30, but FantasyScore players could have a nice target on their hands with him. Mike Foltynewicz is starting his first career game against the Reds Friday, and Phillips is on a nice 20-for-63 run over his last 15 games. Phillips is cheap, too.

Fantasy Tip: Callaspo ($2,100 4.2% of cap) is just 7-for-44 over his last 14 games with four runs and three RBI, and he faces sneaky righty Anthony DeSclafani ($5,100, 10.2% of cap). Consider Callaspo a desperation flier for FantasyScore contests Friday, but his value could increase if he continues to hit high in the order.

Fantasy Tip: With Johnson sidelined, Jace Peterson ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) will likely see more playing time, but he doesn't offer much value at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Over 21 2/3 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, Foltynewicz has a 2.08 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and a 12.5 K/9. The 23-year-old right-hander should be viewed as a high-risk, high-reward start in all fantasy formats Friday. A speculative add in NL-only leagues isn't out of the question, though, especially with the potential Foltynewicz pitches well and sticks in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) isn't an exciting piece to any FantasyScore lineup, but hitting cleanup could make him a nice value play today against Leake. Johnson does have five hits, including a home run, in 13 career at-bats against Leake.

Fantasy Tip: Young ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is batting only .169 (10-for-59) with three stolen bases so far this year, and hitting at the bottom of the batting order really doesn't do much for FantasyScore users. Until he gets going, Young isn't an attractive play for daily gamers.

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran threw his fastball 49.3% of the time in his last start, and manager Fredi Gonzalez said that split is too low. Gonzalez said Teheran's command and variation of his fastball is one of his strengths. Teheran's velocity was back up to 93 mph in that start after dipping as low as 88 mph. "He manages his fastball, both sides of the plate, elevates it and sinks it and his other stuff is off the fastball," Gonzalez said. "For whatever reason in the last couple starts he's doing it the other way around. Tomorrow when he throws his side (session) he's got to get back to that: four-seam (fastball), two-seam and locate his fastball and pitch off of his fastball."
Fantasy Tip: Teheran ($7,200, 14.4% of your cap) is at a robust price and until he regains his form, he's a matchup play on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz is the team's second-best pitching prospect, according to MLB.com. The 23-year-old right-hander has a 2.08 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Gwinnett. He has 18 strikeouts over 13 innings in his past two starts. He's worth watching on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran has coughed up 12 earned runs over the past 15 innings in his previous three outings. FantasyScore owners would do well to avoid Teheran ($7,200; 14.4% of cap) until he can get untracked and start to show more consistency.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Escobar ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) in all formats. His absence has allowed Dan Uggla ($1,900, 3.8) to draw into the lineup, and Uggla had a monster five-RBI showing Tuesday, April 28. Still, Uggla is nothing more than a flier for FantasyScore players. Continue to check back for updates on Escobar's injury status and return timeline.

Fantasy Tip: Young ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has started five of the last seven games in center field over Cameron Maybin ($2,400, 4.8% of cap), as Young appears to be earning the majority of starts. Young has just five hits through his last 37 plate appearances, though, and he shouldn't be counted on in FantasyScore contests until he shows some life at the dish.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a low-upside FantasyScore play, and his seasonal value has taken a hit with Alberto Callaspo ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) and Kelly Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) cutting into his starts at the hot corner. Callaspo isn't in the starting lineup Wednesday. Johnson is playing left field and batting sixth.

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli has not allowed a hit in five road appearances this season but has a 12.00 ERA in three home appearances and is allowing opponents to hit .357 against him in those games.
Fantasy Tip: Grilli has seven saves so far this season and does not appear to be in danger of losing the closer job. Owners should continue to have Grilli in their starting lineup until he has several bad outings in a row.

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA over his last three starts and is allowing opponents to hit .333 off him during that span. Teheran said he is not dealing with any injuries and is not sure what is causing his location issues. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he is a little worried about Teheran since his location is not like it was last season.
Fantasy Tip: Teheran ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) played pretty well in his first two starts but has allowed at least four runs in each of his last three starts. Owners on FantasyScore may want to avoid Teheran until he is able to put a few good starts together.
