Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Duffy is considered day-to-day after X-rays on his wrist came back negative. He could return later this week. The left-handed hitting Gillaspie has some pope but is batting just .207 (6-for-29) and carries very little daily upside hitting so low in the Gigantes batting order.

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz improved to 2-2 after beating the San Francisco Giants in his start Monday, May 30. He tossed six solid innings of one-run ball, surrendering only three hits and two walks, while striking out four.
Fantasy Tip: The 24-year-old has been the definition of a mixed bag in 2016 so far, as he's had two outings where he couldn't make it beyond the fourth inning, and his other four starts saw the right-hander yield two runs or fewer. He's definitely exhibited some intriguing potential, and while he still might be inconsistent for most mixed leagues, Foltynewicz could definitely be a worthwhile pickup for NL-only formats.

Atlanta Braves 2B Daniel Castro is not in the starting lineup against San Francisco Giants SP Jeff Samardzija Monday, May 30. 3B Gordon Beckham will start at shortstop, while 3B Adonis Garcia will start at third base and is hitting fourth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Garcia was recently recalled by the Braves and has gone 1-for-7 at the plate since returning. Owners in most fantasy leagues should be able to find better players to use and can avoid Garcia.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran probably will not miss any starts because of the injury, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He is scheduled to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in his next start and would be a risky option for owners because of the matchup.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran has played his way out of fantasy consideration in some leagues, but it's not all his fault. Sunday's performance wasn't a bad one, but the Braves are one of the worst teams in baseball and they don't give pitchers much help. Teheran was also battling a blister on his foot, and that could have hampered him. Until Teheran can put a good streak together, you may want to leave him on your bench, but Teheran does put up solid numbers. He just doesn't get the wins.

Atlanta Braves C Tyler Flowers is not in the lineup on Sunday, May 29, against Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler. C A.J. Pierzynski will draw his first start in four days behind the plate and bat sixth. INF Chase d'Arnaud will see his first action of the year at shortstop - the third different Atlanta player to start there in as many days - and hit eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Flowers has been one of the few bright spots on a dreadful Atlanta team this season, although he is only a consideration for those owners in NL-only or two-catcher formats. The 29-year-old d'Arnaud should start seeing more playing time with Erick Aybar on the disabled list and is batting .356, but he has yet to hit a home run or drive in a run in 45 at-bats.

Atlanta Braves 2B Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored in a 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins Saturday, May 28, and interim manager Brian Snitker said Beckham is "bouncing" around and feeling good.
Fantasy Tip: Beckham owns a .314 average, but his limited power makes him an NL-only league option.

The Atlanta Braves have placed SS Erick Aybar (foot) on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right foot. He was hit by a pitch from Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley in the fourth inning and left the game during the following inning. X-rays came back negative.
Fantasy Tip: Aybar was batting just .182 with four doubles and six RBI through 148 at-bats before getting injured. Daniel Castro is likely to see the bulk of the action at shortstop in his absence but he is not a great option in any fantasy format. Gordon Beckham and Chase d'Arnaud are also possibilities to receive time at short.

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte, SS Erick Aybar and INF Chase d'Arnaud are not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Wei-Yin Chen Saturday, May 28. OF Mallex Smith will bat leadoff and play center field, 3B Adonis Garcia will bat seventh and play the hot corner and INF Daniel Castro will bat eighth and play shortstop.
Fantasy Tip: Smith is batting .288 with two doubles, two triples, three home runs and eight RBI in 66 at-bats this month and makes a decent outfield option in NL-only and deep mixed leagues because of his speed. Garcia and Castro are batting a combined .180 (11-for-61) with two RBI this month and should be avoided in all fantasy formats.
Fri, 27 May 2016 21:04:51 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Aybar is hitting just .186, and Castro's .204 mark isn't much better. Neither player needs to be owned in any fantasy format.
Fri, 27 May 2016 13:56:28 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The speedster Smith could lose even more playing time against lefties moving forward now that Adonis Garcia is back on the major league roster. Smith remains useful in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for his speed, though. Francoeur is a lefty specialist these days. He's hitting .320 with both of his homers against southpaws and is a deep sleeper in case he runs into one.
Fri, 27 May 2016 11:29:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Garcia was initially sent down to work on his defense in left field, so it remains to be seen how Atlanta will use him this time around, but he's likely to see regular playing time. He was hitting .260 with a home run and eight RBI in 104 at-bats earlier this year and should be added for his power potential in deep mixed and NL-only leagues if he's available.
Fri, 27 May 2016 00:25:48 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Markakis is a Jekyll and Hyde kind of player. He has a dismal batting average this month, yet Markakis leads the team with 24 runs batted in. Atlanta is having an awful year, and the fantasy values of several players are dropping like a rock. Markakis should not be given fantasy consideration at this point, even with 24 RBI.

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman came into Thursday, May 26, hitting just .135 with runners in scoring position after leading the majors last year in that category with a .376 average. He entered Thursday in a 1-for-18 slump with runners in scoring position, and he's hitting .185 (10-for-54) with a .242 on-base percentage in the last 13 games with two home runs. Freeman hit .422 with nine extra-base hits (five home runs) in his previous 12 games. "Right now I suck, there's no getting around it," said Freeman, whose average, OBP and slugging percentage before Friday were all well below his career marks of .285/.366/.466 entering this season. Freeman said health hasn't been an issue.
Fantasy Tip: Freeman's numbers aren't terrible (.256-8-15), but his owners would surely like to see him capitalize in the rare moments when his teammates are in scoring position in front of him. The lack of protection around Freeman in Atlanta's lineup is likely to hurt his RBI and runs-scoring chances all year. Still, Freeman profiles as a lower-end starting fantasy first baseman everywhere.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly has made one start and two relief appearances with Atlanta this season with just two strikeouts through 12 innings and a 3.75 ERA. He is a fringe own in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues when in the majors, but he can be replaced now that he is headed back to Gwinnett.
