Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: It was Freeman's ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) first home run since returning from the disabled list nine games ago. He doesn't have a lot of help surrounding him in Atlanta, which stands to impact his upside through the end of the year and potentially next season, too. He is a risky play at FantasyScore outside of prime matchups.

Fantasy Tip: Without the option to use the designated hitter, manager Joe Girardi has already suggested Rodriguez ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) might rest all weekend. Though, it wouldn't be surprising to see him draw a start in one game. Seasonal owners should plan to have a backup option ready for the entire weekend, and FantasyScore players can avoid Rodriguez unless he does grab a start.

Atlanta Braves C Christian Bethancourt is expected to see the majority of starts at catcher for the rest of the season, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. The team wants to see what they have in their young catcher heading into the offseason.
Fantasy Tip: That pretty much closes the book on A.J. Pierzynski's ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) fantasy value in the majority of leagues. He was having a fine season, too. Bethancourt ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) now becomes worth owning in deep mixed and leagues that start two catchers if you're unhappy with your current backstop. Take a wait-and-see approach with him in daily leagues, but it's hard to pass up his current salary if he gets in a groove with consistent playing time.

Fantasy Tip: Bringing Olivera ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) when rosters expanded was expected from Atlanta, but you should look to add him to your fantasy roster in all formats right now if you need middle infield help. The Braves are expected to use Olivera mainly at third base, meaning Adonis Garcia ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) will lose most of his value in NL leagues.

Atlanta Braves C A.J. Pierzynski is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 26. C Christian Bethancourt is starting and hitting seventh against Colorado Rockies SP Yohan Flande. Also, OF Jonny Gomes is starting in left field and hitting cleanup.
Fantasy Tip: Against Flande, using Bethancourt ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) and Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) aren't bad considerations if you're looking for salary cap relief. Gomes, especially, could return nice value in the middle of the order against a lefty.

Fantasy Tip: Peterson ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has fallen on hard times lately, and he's batting just .225 (20-for-89) with two home runs and nine RBI in August, and he's been moved down in the order. Hector Olivera is expected to come up to play in September, too, which could cause Peterson to lose playing time. Peterson isn't a great choice on FantasyScore right now.

Fantasy Tip: Many folks will likely avoid Simmons ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) because of his recent injury or for the fact he hasn't been much of an offensive force in 2015. Don't blindly avoid him, though, as he could be a successful sleeper pick against the hittable Chad Bettis.

Atlanta Braves OF Cameron Maybin is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 25, against the Colorado Rockies. OF Michael Bourn is in center field and has the eighth spot against Rockies SP Chad Bettis.
Fantasy Tip: Maybin ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) hits .326-5-27 at Turner Field but only has one at-bat against Bettis for his career. This appears to be a standard night off and a chance to get Bourn ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) in the lineup. Bourn is hitting .125 in the last week, so don't take a chance he'll break out.

Fantasy Tip: Swisher ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) batted sixth and fourth in games over the weekend, including a .750 average in the fourth position. Swisher is also hitting .625 in left field, and this may be behind the move to put him higher in the order. He may be worth a flier at this price.

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz is scheduled to start the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Aug. 25. He has allowed 21 runs in 21 innings in four starts in the month of August, allowing at least six runs in three of his past four outings.
Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is attractive for FantasyScore players due to his low salary, but he has been terrible lately. Avoid him until he can get untracked, especially on nights like Tuesday where there are a full slate of games.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Fredi Gonzalez moved Gomes to cleanup due to the fact he hits 50 points higher against left-handed pitchers than right-handers. At $2,500 (5.0% of cap) he is a decent low-end FantasyScore play when facing LHP.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 22:48:08 -0700
Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran allowed three earned runs, four hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings in a win Monday, Aug. 24, against the Colorado Rockies. He also struck out five in the quality start.
Fantasy Tip: Teheran ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) is 7-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 13 home starts this season with 75 strikeouts over 84 2/3 innings at Turner Field this season. When he is home, he is a slam-dunk play in FantasyScore.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 15:59:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Olivera ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) was expected to be recalled by the Braves sometime this week, but they're now taking more time with their prized prospect. He should play mostly every day when he's up, meaning Jace Peterson's value will take a big hit. Olivera has only had 98 at-bats in the minor leagues this year, and he is hitting .286 with two home runs and seven RBI. It's best to own him in a keeper format. He could be a nice value pick on FantasyScore when he's in the majors, but don't expect much out of him in the final month of the season in traditional leagues.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 13:28:21 -0700
Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (knee) is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 24, but manager Fredi Gonzalez said Simmons has no structural damage and is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Fantasy Tip: Pedro Ciriaco ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) Monday. Ciriaco shouldn't be viewed as anything other than a desperation source of cap relief by FantasyScore players Monday. Check back for an update on Simmons ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) before returning him to your lineups Tuesday.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 13:21:41 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) has historically hit well against lefties, but this season he boasts an underwhelming .227 batting average and .379 slugging percentage against southpaws. FantasyScore players should view Gomes as a high-risk, high-reward option for contests Monday.
