Braves | Mike Minor not too concerned

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 11:13:05 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will visit with Dr. James Andrews about his sore left shoulder next week, but Minor isn't too concerned. "It would really surprise me if there was something majorly wrong. Last year there was a lot more pain than right now. I was throwing all year, trying to make every start. I could throw (now), I could pitch and potentially I don't think anybody would even notice if I didn't say anything," Minor said. Minor struggled through 2014 while pitching through shoulder pain for much of the year, and the Braves don't want to go down that road again. The worst-case scenario might be exploratory surgery to find out what is wrong in his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Until we have the final word from Dr. Andrews, fantasy owners need to sit tight on Minor. After he pitched through shoulder pain for much of 2014, exploratory surgery may be needed. It was easy to view Minor as a bounce-back candidate in 2015 after he was arguably Atlanta's best pitcher in 2013. His shoulder tightness puts a halt to that for now. Stay tuned.

Braves | Mike Minor visiting Dr. Andrews

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 14:35:31 -0800

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will have his shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews early next week, according to the team. An exact date has not been set, though.

Fantasy Tip: Until there is an official word on the severity of the complications Minor is dealing with, it is impossible to view him as anything more than a late-round flier in mixed drafts. There is upside for a bounce-back campaign, but he has to be healthy. Continue to check back for updates.

Braves | Freddie Freeman unlikely for full season

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 11:42:57 -0800

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman is unlikely to play a full 162-game season again in 2015. However, he won't be out of the lineup enough for the team to worry about carrying a backup who doesn't play multiple positions. Manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn't plan to carry a third catcher on the roster, meaning 3B Chris Johnson will be the primary backup at first base as he was the last two years. Gonzalez would like to give Freeman a day off occasionally when the team faces a tough left-hander. Freeman played in every game last year and all but six innings the entire season.

Fantasy Tip: Many are high on Freeman in 2015 as a solid fantasy first baseman in the early rounds once the elite names come off the board. Freeman's fantasy floor is rather safe, but his home run output may never take the next step if he continues to hit as many liners as he does. Also, you have to take into account that the lineup around him won't help him out much at all.

Braves | Mike Minor to see specialist

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 11:06:10 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will be shut down indefinitely and will visit with a specialist in the next few days, according president of baseball operations John Hart. The team is taking a proactive approach, and they're hoping it's not a season-ending injury. Hart also said Minor might have another MRI exam on his shoulder. SPs Eric Stults, Wandy Rodriguez, Mike Foltynewicz and Manny Banuelos are competing for the fifth rotation spot, but if Minor isn't ready to start the season, the Braves could go with two of those pitchers in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are definitely hoping this injury is minor. But after Minor's frustrating 2014 season in which he dealt with plenty of shoulder woes, this can't be a good sign early in spring. Minor was considered a sleeper candidate before this news after being just a year removed from a 13-9 season in which he posted an ERA of 3.21 and a K/9 of 8.0 in 32 starts. Minor might still be worth a late-round stab in mixed leagues, but definitely keep an eye on the results of his shoulder tests.

Braves | Mike Minor will miss start

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 15:59:02 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will not start Sunday, March 8, because of left shoulder tightness, the team announced.

Fantasy Tip: Minor is a just a year removed from a 13-win, 181-strikeout season with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP, but he battled shoulder issues throughout the 2014 season. Missing the start isn't shocking news, though, as the Braves are likely being cautious. Make sure to check back for updates on Minor's progression through the spring. He remains a solid late-round option in drafts, as a likely bounce-back candidate this season, if there aren't further setbacks during camp.

Braves | Andrelton Simmons injury update

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 16:36:34 -0800

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (oblique) is expected to miss at least the first few spring training games.

Fantasy Tip: Simmons' stock in fantasy leagues is unchanged with this news. He remains a middle infield option in deep leagues and a starting shortstop option in NL-only formats. Owners drafting him will hope he's able to recapture some of the power he displayed during the 2013 season after failing to reach double-digit homers last season.

Braves | Jose Peraza big-league ready?

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 16:35:02 -0800

Atlanta Braves SS Jose Peraza is creating debate among Braves coaches regarding his readiness to start the season in the majors. "Half of them say, 'he's ready to go,'" Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Some say, 'give him a couple of months, he hasn't been any higher than Double-A.' It's always a good discussion."

Fantasy Tip: Peraza tallied fewer than 200 plate appearances at the Double-A level last year. However, it appears the Braves are at least considering the possibility of him breaking camp with the parent club. Peraza packs essentially no pop (two homers in 499 PA last season), but he hit north of .330 at each minor league stop and stole 60 bases total last season. The young middle infielder would be a viable late-round selection in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Chris Johnson lowers hands

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:15:54 -0800

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson lowered his hands this year at the suggestion of new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson doesn't crack our list of top-20 fantasy third baseman in 2015. After a career year in 2013, Johnson disappointed with a .263 average, 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 2014. An off-the-charts average on balls in play in 2013 led many to overvalue him last year, and they paid the price. Low contact rates won't endear Johnson to anyone again this year, and he could lose playing time at the hot corner if he struggles, making him solely an NL-only option.

Braves | Eric Young turning heads

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 18:09:14 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. has been impressive in the first week of spring training workouts with his ability, conditioning and work habits. Beat writer David O'Brien thinks Young might be the favorite for opening day in center field.

Fantasy Tip: If Young is able to win the starting center field job he would obviously be a decent FantasyScore option, especially for his speed potential. Just don't expect much in the way of power.

Braves | Eury Perez to start in CF for ATL?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 15:29:18 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eury Perez is the early favorite to start in center field to begin the year with OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) likely sidelined until at least May 1, in the opinion of's Mark Bowman

Fantasy Tip: Perez tallied just 10 plate appearances in the majors last season, and he isn't an impact player in standard leagues. That said, he's bested 20 stolen bases in the minors each of the past five seasons and could be a cheap stolen base source to start the year for NL-only gamers.

Braves | Melvin Upton could be out until May

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 15:20:08 -0800

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to be sidelined until at least May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Upton was little more than a late-round flier in large mixed leagues prior to this prognosis due to consecutive poor seasons. Now, he can be bypassed entirely in standard league drafts. His injury will provide NL-only gamers a discount for his power and speed combo, but his batting average projects to be a drag in the low-.200s. Those in really deep mixed leagues might want to also draft and stash him in a DL spot.

Braves | Melvin Upton has sesamoiditis

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 13:48:17 -0800

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr.'s (foot) MRI exam Friday, Feb. 27, revealed sesamoiditis, or inflammation in the bone behind the ball of the left foot. He'll be in a short-leg cast for two weeks and a walking boot for roughly four to six weeks. Upton will miss most of spring training and is expected to start baseball activities in early April. OFs Todd Cunningham, Eury Perez and Zoilo Almonte are the likely candidates to fill in in center field with Upton out.

Fantasy Tip: Although Upton's batting average tanked the last two years, he was still a sleeper candidate at the end of mixed drafts for his stolen base abilities. That won't be the case now, as he could miss the first month of the season. Don't forget about Eric Young Jr. figuring into the outfield mix, at least as a platoon candidate. He or Almonte will likely be your best fantasy bets in Upton's absence, but their main value will come in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Melvin Upton likely to miss spring training

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:56:57 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is expected to miss spring training, as he will be in a cast for two weeks and then a walking boot for another four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been arguably the worst everyday player in baseball the past two seasons, so this is another hit to his underwhelming fantasy stock. He has power-speed upside, but he has hit just .198 through 910 at-bats over the past two seasons. He is not worth drafting in the majority of mixed leagues.

Braves | Andrelton Simmons fine

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 10:09:51 -0800

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (oblique) did some light throwing Friday, Feb. 27, and "dry swings." His oblique injury doesn't look like it will keep him out of action for very long.

Fantasy Tip: Simmons is a defensive star in the league. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much going for him at the dish, especially after he hit 10 fewer home runs in 2014 than he did the year prior. And he doesn't run very much at all, either, meaning he's a late-round flier at the position in the hope that he can rebound some from his overcorrection in 2014.

Braves | Melvin Upton has toe injury

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 10:08:29 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Melvin Upton Jr. (toe) is dealing with an injury to his toe, and he's heading for X-rays.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is a deep sleeper in mixed league drafts, mainly for his stolen base contributions. You know he'll be a thorn in your side in the batting average department, as he's posted BAs of just .208 and .184 in the last two years. Monitor his toe injury.
