Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Step 1 for Banuelos is to prove he can stay healthy. The one-time Yankees prospect has had no shortage of troubles with his pitching arm, but if he can sort some things out in the minors the Braves could certainly give him a look.

Atlanta Braves RP Shae Simmons (elbow) is expected to rejoin the club in the next couple of weeks after positive rehab outings with Class AAA Gwinnett. Simmons underwent Tommy John surgery in February 2015 and missed all of last season.
Fantasy Tip: The Braves liked what they saw out of Simmons as a rookie (2.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23 K's in 21 2/3 IP) and planned to use him as a setup man prior to the injury. He'll no doubt be eased back into action, but he's a name to file away in case Arodys Vizcaino stumbles as Atlanta's closer.

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out a career-high 12, against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, May 24. He did not factor in the decision.
Fantasy Tip: After a slow start to 2016, Teheran has been outstanding. He has now allowed one earned run or fewer in each of his last six starts, posting a 0.89 ERA and 1.25 WHIP to go with 42 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings. The problem is he's 1-2 in that stretch -- only San Diego Padres SP James Shields (1.67) is getting less run support than Teheran this season. Still, those ratios and strikeouts should be enough to warrant finding a roster spot for Teheran.

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte will be the everyday center fielder because interim manager Brian Snitker thinks he is the best option at this point. OF Mallex Smith likely will see most of his playing time in left field but will start at center field when Inciarte receives a day off.
Fantasy Tip: Inciarte is hitting only .219 with two RBI since returning to the lineup and probably should be avoided in most fantasy leagues. Smith has been a bit inconsistent at the plate recently but is still hitting .291 in May. He should be considered a decent option in daily fantasy leagues when he is in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Flowers has seen the majority of the action this week, but this still looks like a true platoon. In his past 10 at-bats Flowers has two doubles and a home run, so he has demonstrated some slugging tendencies. The platoon situation makes Flowers less desirable in weekly or annual leagues, but DFS players should take advantage.

Fantasy Tip: He's not getting the run support, but he has been decent with a 2.73 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and a 7.55 K/9 this season. Teheran is an upper-middle start at home today.

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson and SS Erick Aybar are not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Jerad Eickhoff Sunday, May 22. 3B Gordon Beckham will start at second base, while SS Chase d'Arnaud will start at third base and is batting second. 2B Daniel Castro will start at shortstop and is batting seventh.
Fantasy Tip: Castro has been pretty quiet over the past week, while d'Arnaud has posted a .474 batting average during the same span. Owners probably can pass on Castro in most leagues, but d'Arnaud can be a sleeper option in some daily fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: The former prime prospect has bounced around in recent years, but he has been solid at Class AAA Gwinnett with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in seven outings (five starts). He has walked 20 batters in 37 2/3 innings, but his WHIP is still very good because he's missing bats. He's not a real solid streamer in DFS, and it's best to take a wait-and-see approach.

Fantasy Tip: Two saves in four days represents a windfall for Vizcaino, who notched only three over the Braves' first 38 outings. It'd be a minor shock if he isn't a top target for teams at the trade deadline this season and is sporting a 1.45 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 26:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio thus far, but Atlanta might see the 25-year-old as part of the core group of players it wants to hold on to during its rebuilding process. He's a low-end fantasy closer given his lack of save chances, but worth keeping in lineups nonetheless.

Atlanta Braves 2B Kelly Johnson, C A.J. Pierzynski, OF Mallex Smith are not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Adam Morgan Saturday, May 21. INF Chase d'Arnaud will bat leadoff and play third base, INF Gordon Beckham will bat second and play second base, OF Jeff Francoeur will play left field and bat cleanup, C Tyler Flowers will start behind the plate and bat sixth and OF Ender Inciarte will bat seventh and play center field.
Fantasy Tip: The Braves are facing a left-handed pitcher this afternoon, which explains why several of their left-handed-hitting position players are on the bench. Beckham and d'Arnaud are a combined 30-for-86 (.349) this season and should be viewed as productive sources of salary cap relief in DFS.

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, May 20. The home run was his first of 2016 and came in his 151st at-bat of the season.
Fantasy Tip: Markakis is batting less than .200 in May and the home run was just his second extra-base hit of the month in more than 60 at-bats. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats until he can string together several productive performances.
Fri, 20 May 2016 19:48:21 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Wisler has tossed quality starts in six of his last seven outings and would have had a much better record if he had decent run support. He has a very favorable matchup for his next outing against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 26, and is worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy contests.
Fri, 20 May 2016 19:43:35 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Freeman had collected just five hits in his previous 29 at-bats before connecting for his first homer of the game in the third inning. His ninth-inning blast gave him the seventh multihomer game of his career. This could be the start of Freeman breaking out of his slump, so he's worth considering for daily fantasy lineups.
Fri, 20 May 2016 12:39:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: You're best off avoiding Aybar in all fantasy formats after the way he's started the year. He has a .174/.207/.205 line with no home runs, five RBI and only two stolen bases. Aybar has been pretty useless to fantasy owners.
Fri, 20 May 2016 12:34:26 -0700
Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis is hitting cleanup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Aaron Nola Friday, May 20. 2B Gordon Beckham is playing third base and moves up to the No. 2 spot in the batting order.
Fantasy Tip: Markakis, who has no home runs on the year, isn't your prototypical cleanup hitter. In a weak Atlanta lineup, the move to fourth doesn't really do anything to increase his fantasy value. He remains a weak option for outfield depth in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues. Beckham has hit .333 but also has no home runs and eight RBI. The move to the two-hole is good for his daily value, but he, too, doesn't move the fantasy needle all that much.
