Atlanta Braves news, rumors and injuries

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman (oblique) and the team are hoping that he can return right after his 15-day disabled list stint is up like he did for an oblique strain in 2013. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said it's not a high oblique strain, so the injury isn't deemed as serious. Freeman will head to Florida to work out and rehab. He was just 3-for-23 in his first six games after returning from a wrist injury, and was 7-for-38 (.184) with a double, two home runs and four RBI in 10 games since returning from the DL.
Fantasy Tip: Even though Freeman ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) wasn't hitting well following his return from his first DL stint, he must be retained in all fantasy leagues. Chris Johnson ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) figures to see the bulk of playing time at first base with Freeman out. Johnson is a very mediocre FantasyScore commodity, though, and he doesn't display much power at all in a weak overall offense.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) did some throwing and fielding of ground balls Tuesday, Aug. 4, and he could return by the end of the week. He hurt his thumb over the weekend trying to dive to catch a ball, and X-rays came back negative. An MRI exam showed a bone bruise in his thumb. The improvement in his thumb slowed a bit Tuesday. Simmons has hit .198 (17-for-86) since the start of July with just one extra-base hit in that time.
Fantasy Tip: Daniel Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is starting at shortstop in place of Simmons again tonight, but he is a weak FantasyScore option while hitting at the bottom of the lineup. Daily gamers won't be in a rush to get Simmons back into their lineups when he's back, and you shouldn't either.

Fantasy Tip: With Freddie Freeman (oblique) back on the disabled list, Johnson ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) should be the one to benefit the most from more playing time in Atlanta. Johnson doesn't have much power and is only hitting .184 (16-for-87) with one home run and five RBI against right-handers in 2015. Even against Peavy and in a run-producing spot in the order, Johnson is a pretty mediocre FantasyScore pick tonight.

Fantasy Tip: Simmons ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) may be out for a few days past this, so the best thing to do is bench him until he returns and then wait a couple days longer. Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap), as previously suggested, may be a good cheap source of FantasyScore points.

Fantasy Tip: It's another tough break for Freeman ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) and his owners. He had just seven hits (two home runs) in 38 at-bats since returning from his first DL stint. Continue stashing him on the DL. Chris Johnson ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) might benefit the most from extra playing time at first base. The Braves become much weaker offensively without Freeman, and targeting cheap starters against them could prove effective on FantasyScore.

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) has a bone bruise on his thumb, manager Fredi Gonzalez said Monday, Aug. 3. Simmons was sent for an MRI which revealed the injury.
Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain how long Simmons ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will be sidelined. Daniel Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) continues to start at shortstop in his absence and he is a good low-end FantasyScore option who can save you plenty of salary to spread across other spots.

Fantasy Tip: Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is worth using in FantasyScore if you're looking to save salary to allocate to your pitching spots.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) saw big improvement with his right thumb from Sunday, Aug. 2, to Monday, Aug. 3. However, the team still isn't sure when Simmons will return to the starting lineup. "He took an MRI," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. The team is awaiting the team doctor to read the results.
Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain how long Simmons will remain sidelined. Daniel Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) made a start in Simmons' place at shortstop and is a short-term, low-priced option in FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players, you know the drill. At least it wasn't an aggravation of the wrist injury which forced him out for several weeks. Avoid using Freeman ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) until he can officially return and prove his health in two full games without any lingering discomfort.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 3. 2B Daniel Castro is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain Monday.
Fantasy Tip: Simmons ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is still awaiting MRI results on his thumb. He suffered the injury diving for a ground ball in the field. Continue to check back for updates, but at this point, it seems possible he'll avoid a stint on the disabled list. Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has no power upside, and he is nothing more than a desperation flier for FantasyScore contests Monday.
Sun, 02 Aug 2015 19:15:14 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Peterson ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has been in a bit of slump, and it cost him a spot at the top of the lineup. If he can play his way back into a better spot in the order, he could be worth considering again at FantasyScore.
Sun, 02 Aug 2015 19:06:46 -0700
Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out seven over seven innings in a win over the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday, Aug. 2, and he owns a 2.56 ERA in his career against the Phillies and a 1.21 ERA since 2014.
Fantasy Tip: It was a rare impressive road outing for Teheran ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) this season, and if you plan on using him at FantasyScore, it is best to make sure it is a home game for Atlanta.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons (thumb) will undergo an MRI exam on his sprained right thumb Monday, Aug. 3. He suffered the injury while diving for a single off the bat of Philadelphia Phillies OF Odubel Herrera Saturday, Aug. 1. X-rays revealed that the thumb is not fractured but Simmons is still experiencing pain.
Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable for Simmons' ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) return. He is batting .254 with three home runs and 30 RBIs in 102 games. Daniel Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should see the bulk of the playing time at shortstop while Simmons is sidelined.

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons is out of the lineup Sunday, Aug. 2, against the Philadelphia Phillies. 2B Daniel Castro will start at shortstop and hit eighth in the order against LHP Adam Morgan.
Fantasy Tip: Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) hit .389 at Class AA this season, but he hit just .264 at Class AAA before joining the Braves. FantasyScore owners will need to see him start producing before making the investment.
Sun, 02 Aug 2015 08:08:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) is hitting just .231 against left-handed pitching, and he's no longer relevant for FantasyScore purposes.
